Chevy 350 5.7 Engine found in 2000 1500 Express Van with Plastic Intake manifold

I have recently had the pleasure of removing and installing an intake manifold on a Chevy 1500 Express van. I must admit that while it still uses the cast iron 5.7 350 mill it sure has gotten a lot more fancy for the later model trucks and vans that it gets put into.

For starters the intake manifold only has 8 bolts rather than the traditional 12. Also the intake is half aluminum and half plastic. The upper half is made of plastic and houses the injection unit that is in-fact a port fuel design rather than a TBI. Here are some photos of the intake and fancy injectors found on the last of the 350's that were offered by GM

Look at that trick distributor. Look at that plastic intake and funky injector plug in the center. Its was interesting. Funny thing is that this motor come in with a tick and we have yet to find it. Customer claims to have run out of oil. Bearings were shot but were still working on a fix for the 1500 Express vans that start ticking.

That's a Vortec motor. Did you replace camshaft, and check cam bearings? Those things have a tendency to piss coolant into the pan, and it eats up the cam bearings.

'S called, CPI, or Central Port Injection if I recall correctly.

And those distributors are junk. Crossfiring, the distributor collects moisture, causes no starts, running like shit, and so on and so on.

Yes I had to replace the cam, worse yet the machien shop that installed the bearings messed up on the last one and I had to re-do them all! Guess you can say we dont pay people to install bearings anymore. It really pissed me off, and I have more to vent about them later in another thread.

Anyway, the injection system on this vehicle is more of a ported design. I am going to post some photos of the inside of that unit so you can see. Very odd system unlike the CFI injection units of old.

In this case, the vehicle was run low on oil, causing a severe knock, however it seems as ALL the Vortech motors will start knocking at some point.

From the factory these Vortech engines come with the bigger pick-up screens and are of higher volume. Being low 3 quarts of oil then cruising 100 MPH down the highway is what sucked this Vortech.

Well after almost two years of minimum payments we have some progress on this vehicle. The only thing I hate is offering someone a cash price, and them making minimum payments for several years.

Still, he was on time with them, and his patience will prove that good things come to thouse whom wait.

Getting ready to fire her off today!

Are you telling me that a customer actually is on a 2 year payment plan for an engine rebuild, and you've had to sit on that vehicle the entire time... and now they have finally paid enough for you to get near completion?

Wow!  I'd hate to know how many years their mortgage is, maybe 200

Someone like yourself could never keep all those parts in order for that long, let alone remember where everything went. For all you know this van could be his mortgage PowerStroker. Only thing is he didnt allow it to go into foreclosure.

Hell some months his payments paid for my groceries while I got screwed on other non-pay jobs. Unlike you PowerStroker, we finish what we start, one way or the other. We dont have the manufacture to buy back our problems. This is the sort of dedication that sends once was business owners like Pogo to work at the dealer. The dedication of the customer to his vehicle is what keeps him out of a car payment.

Of course a complete R/I + Overhaul is not something your dealership is capable of doing in-house. You little dealership spoon feeder mechanics just "Replace" parts; you dont know how to rebuild them.

Well I actually wasn't trying to pick a fight or anything this time Rex, but if you really want one...

In the second post on this thread are two photos, the one on the right is one that caused an entire conversation of the merits (or lack thereof) of using roloc discs to clean deck surfaces.  It's too bad your search function sucks balls, because I could swear that in that thread, you stated as part of your defense for rolocs, that this vehicle had already been repaired and returned to the customer a long time ago, and has been running great since.

Did I catch you in another lie Rex???  Like the 6.0 rear main tool you don't own

Yes I recall that thread about how you dont like to clean mating surfaces properly.

I had a good laugh, and yes, many of my repairs require the use of a roloc pad to properly perform. I have fixed many vehicles using a roloc pad to clean the mating surfaces. I also know how to clean up after using a roloc pad, a procedure that escapes your ability.

I know you are really grasping at straws with your repeated attempts to put words in my mouth, however truth be known, all of my repairs using a roloc pad have been put back on the road and have been running fine. I will also tell you that a special tool is not "REQUIRED" to change a rear main seal on a 6.0 Diesel PowerStroke engine; however this has nothing to do with the original post.

We all know you are a spoon fed baby. Dont worry yourself with overhauls; just stick to installing remanufactured parts, thats what you are best at. You remind me of Part Swapping Line Monkey, go fondle your $500 tool some more.

Well Stoma, as much as I hate to agree with you..... The newer Vortech motors are "Junk".

I replaced the crappy "Metric" pistons GM used with some quality "Standard American" sized 4 inch Sealed Power flat tops, however many of the things that make the Vortech "Junk" can not be done away with. (At least without scrapping the current powertrain controls).

Some of the things that GM did to the Vortech 350 that make a once was ledgend "Junk" is,

Intake manifold gasket is prone to leakage. - They tried to carry over the idea that a rubber seal was better than the normal gaskets used for intake. Problem was the cast iron heads would rust a groove and it will start leaking.

Injection system - While ported just above the intake valve, it still uses a centeral injection method. Lacks the power of a PFI design and is somewhat wasteful.

Plastic Timing Cover - The plastic timing cover that was used is junk. They are when brand new, and the same holds true 8 years down the road. I have mentioned it earlier in this thread that replacement of the lower crank seal requires the replacement of the entire timing cover. Not a good design considering a new timting cover kit will cost you $140! Rather than $10 if the lower crank seal goes bad.

Plastic Distributor - Most of the probelms with the ignition system is the plastic distributor housing that wears, not keeping the shaft tight, often times wearing out the cap and rotor, and contributing to driveability issues.

So yeah, Stoma might not be too off in his claims regarding the Vortech. Still they can go several hundered thousand miles if properly serviced and not abused. Something that would be impossible for Stoma to live up to. LOL
