HELP! Engine mod gone wrong!

Hey guys, I've had my VNT turbo for a while and wanted to get more performance. I was recommended to port and polish the intake and exhaust. I found out they used abrasive material to do it like gritty sand. So I got with my friend that tunes Hondas and we decided to try it ourselves. We got a bag of fine sandblasting sand, hooked up into the intake and started the car.

We had to hold down the accelerator otherwise it kept stalling. He wanted to let the engine suck in the sand through the intake so it would port it out and then push it out the exhaust so it would port the exhaust manifold at the same time. I was worried that it might cause problems but he figured it'd be OK as long as we didn't make boost and it get sucked in the turbo. After running the car for an 30 minutes we had worked through half of a 25 lb bag. The engine was bucking and kicking and sounding really weird. We stopped and hooked the car back up normal and took off the sand supply. We tried to start it again and it was really hard, I think one or two of the glowplugs went bad. Once started it wouldn't idle below 1000rpm and kept making weird noises. We took it out and drove it and it started to make scraping and knocking noises.

Help! Can anyone tell me what to do! My buddy only does Hondas so he doesn't know much about Mercedes or Diesels.

Eh.... Well... Um....

You got some bad information. Sucking sand into your intake like that has most likley scorn the cylindars beyond repair. Did this friend of yours claim to be a "BenzWorld Premium Member"? I am assuming this is a joke, and just in case anyone else has the bright idea of trying this...... DONT!

If you did suck sand blasting sand into your intake manifold and run it that long your going to need an overhaul. The only thing you ported and polished was your cylinder walls and pistons. This time around when you port an polish the head use a drill or die-grinder with abrasive paper wraps like what is shown in the photos bellow.

One more thing.... If you are ever at an oil change and they tell you your licence plate gasket is leaking cut-bait and run (Unless they have already pulled the oil drain plug).

Is this really a true story?confused

Hell yeah!
Don't you know Rex,, oh great king of everything automotive?? Sand porting rocks! It doesn't harm your "cylindars" at all! It even gets rid of that out of date cross hatch hone. Zedd is just having trouble because his engine is breathing an extra 1000cfm (cunt farts a minute) of extra air. He just needs to inject a 500 shot of nitrous because we all know thats extra fuel. NOS man NOS! Just like on Fast and the Furious! Those guys are all super cool! I'm totally cool now! Look out guys! Bad Ass Mother Fucker coming through! Gotta get me one of those clear hoods so everyone can see my chromed out engine. OH, I almost forgot Vtec! He needs one of those too! I think they have them at NAPA for $22.95. Make sure you flush the engine really good after the sand porting Rex. The best thing to do is redline the engine and shove a garden hose in there and let the water flow for an hour or so. Make sure you sand port all your customers cars Rex. they will all love the extra performance and will keep them coming back!

Also, Your port job sucks! I have never seen such rough angles in my life!

It's running a little better now. Although the turbo is making more some noise than it used to. confused

I have been looking for a NOS kit but they don't make one for diesels this small.

I think you boys are a little off... Sounds like your talking about the Extrude Hone process where as they take a thick mixure of abrasive gel and pump it thru intakes, heads and anything needing to be polished smooth. Here is the most important thing to remeber,

THE PARTS MUST BE OFF THE CAR!

You can view an actual Extrude Hone of a manifold here - http://www.gethoned.com/process.html

I think you boys been hanging out on MS and BW too long. It shows because you guys only know half of the story, as with most people from them forums.

Mercedes-Shop, you know that chamber you posted a photo of is an Aluminum head! Aluminum is much easier to port and polish than cast iron.

Regardless, if you want to port and polish your upper half its going to be a lot of work and time. For the rookies who may read this, you should know that sucking sand or large amounts of water into your intake is a BIG NO NO! Any port or polish work done will involve you removing the said part and doing the work.

Zedd and MS Rocker are just trying to be funny and I must admit that if anyone actually did suck half a 25lb bag of sand thru thier intake I would look at them and laugh at them for being so stupid. But I get it....

*uck em' if they cant take a joke.... Right?
