Ford recalls Windstar vans over axle corrosion

WASHINGTON Ford says it is recalling 575,000 older model Windstar vans in the United States and Canada over concerns that the rear axles can corrode and potentially break.

The recall covers vehicles in the model years 1998 to 2003 sold in states where the heavy use of road salt can cause more corrosion. That includes Canada, New England, the Mid-Atlantic states and the Great Lakes region.

Ford Motor Co. says it plans to start notifying owners beginning on Sept. 27. The company says the axle breaks have occurred in only a small number of cases.

One would have thought Ford would have issued a recall on the amount of head gaskets the 3.8 liter version of this engine popped, but then again, that would have cut into my profits. Oh well, it shouldnt matter that the 3.8 found in most all Fords had issues until fixed by the aftermarket.

Maybe they just need to wash their vehicles more than once every few years?

Just a thought.

Saw the first broken Windstar axle about a month ago. Another tech raised it to change oil, and once the weight was off the springs SNAP.

There was a time when Ford was paying for 3.8 head gaskets out of warranty, but that program has long since expired.

Let me guess... The effected vehicles have completly rusted away!?

Sounds like Ford design quality to me.

How many 1986 Ford Escorts do you see on the road PowerStroker?

LOL

I know a guy who is the national record holder in NHRA stock eliminator with an Escort. J/FIA I believe is the class. Car runs like 1.44 under the index.

I don't see many 80's Escorts on the road today, even in Detroit. Unless of course you mean in the junk yard, but even then most all of them have been crushed.

S'funny - no mention of the early 80s Toyota Tercel rear control arms and their "silent" recall. I ran across this in the mid90s and with my then fairly new internet connection, learned of a Toyota campaign that actually paid to haul the car from Fox Creek, Alberta to Edmonton, replace the control arms and return the car to the owner.

Turn them upside down and they all look like sisters.

Eh... Take a look around Pogo... There is a reason we do not cover Asian brands in this forum and I think you just pointed it out.

This is a Ford truck / van / SUV forum. Thus why you see a Windstar recall posted here. Often times vans carry lots of passengers, I felt it was important.
