Majority of Americans support legalizing same-sex marriage, poll shows

A majority of Americans 54% say same-sex marriages should be legally recognized, while 42% are opposed, according to a CNN/ORC International Survey released Wednesday.

The poll showed a sharp partisan divide on the issue, with seven in 10 Democrats as well as six in 10 independent voters saying same-sex marriages should be legal, and 72% of Republicans opposed.

President Barack Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage in an ABC News interview in early May, but Mitt Romney says he does not support gay marriage or civil unions.

The poll results come the day after the Ninth U.S. Circuit Appeals Court in San Francisco declined to revisit its earlier decision that ruled California's Proposition 8 unconstitutional and said gay and lesbian couples could marry.

The poll also found that the number of Americans who say they know somebody who is gay has jumped from 49% in 2010 to 60% now.

The CNN poll was conducted by ORC International from May 29-31, with 1,009 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points, with a sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for registered voters.

So let me get this straight...

Because 1009 people were polled you seem to think that represents the entire nation? LOL!

I get calls all the time to participate in polls. I just hang up on them because I dont want to be bothered. I save my opinions for the elections. Most people that take the time to answer polls over the telephone are the minority anyway.

You are soon going to find out that a vast majority of this nation is NOT homosexual. You are also soon going to find out that homosexuality does not qualify for benefits that heterosexual marriages are entitled to. Do you want to know why? Because homosexual relationships are self-serving and non-productive. You see the problem with Democrats and homosexuals is the simple fact they do not know right from wrong. This very serious character flaw should NOT be condoned. There is hope for these people, but only if they are set straight.

I must also make mention of your poll choices. Very lame indeed. People can clearly see your biggotry as you attempt to combine homosexuality with racisim in an effort to prevent a fair and balanced result. It's so gay PowerStroker... Stop it!

I think you are a punk, thats what I think PowerStroker. Unlike Hitler I do no suggest killing the homosexuals, however I do suggest we quit supporting their behaivor. If they want to be gay let them be gay in the privacy of their own home. There is never going to be any hope for them if they get the false impression that what they are doing is right. Shame on people like you PowerStroker! And to think ignorant people like you have no consideration for how this might effect young children who might otherwise have never considered homosexuality. I say we use positive re-inforcement on people with the homo sickness and deport the idiots like yourself who would champion such disgusting acts for the sake of just having something to argue about.
