Tires

Well we all know that bald and low tread tires are not only unsafe, but they can be causing vibrations and all sorts of other problems as well. A good set of tires with a good high-speed balance goes a real long way in terms of a smooth ride both at low speeds and high speeds.

I myself like GoodYear, BFGoodrich and Michelin.

What are you guys using?

It is true that in the many years (8) that I have owned a Mercedes Benz, I have never had to pay for a set of tires. Sure they might be a diffrent brand, but always the same size. I cant complain.

My truck on the other hand.... Matched set of Super Swampers.

<NEVER> had to pay for a set of tires....

When we consider the catalyst for your introduction to the "PowerStroke Mafia", why would you even consider voicing a statement such as that????

It's starting to look like stealing from your customers is a business strategy....

FWIW, Michelin LTX M/S is my hands down favourite. For a slightly more agresive tread, I have liked the old Hankook Z46 pattern (since renamed but I haven't purchased them in real recent history).

The car currently has the Goodyear 'factory' tires on it. While the Goodyear Wranglers have been disappointing in the past, these tires are proving adequate thus far (about 20,000 kms on a 2005).

Now the subject has been broached... what is your feeling on tire rotation? Ford recommends every second oil change. Now and again, a young 'un will tell me "it doesn't need a tire rotation". The only reason it doesn't NEED one is because it's been getting them...

<NEVER> Does NOT mean that we take tires from our customers.

<NEVER> Means that we have aquired enough of these vehicles in distress that we have always had an ample supply.

I am currently running a set of OEM Style Michelin tires on the 560. Collected off about 3 diffrent donors.

Back in the 1990's I noticed that the Michelin tires for mine and many others Mustangs always seemed to have belts seperating, this would cause a buldge, thus a pulsation. Only seemed to happen on the wider Michelin's but sure enough every time, it was a Michelin.

Rotation is simple.  Its a good practice to rotate every other oil change on just about any non-directional tire. If its a FORD TRUCK of any sort you rotate every oil change because they cant help but chop tires. Some of the sports cars with diffrent size front and rear tires are just screwed. Folks with directional ZR rated tires are going to take it in the can if they want a true rotation.

I myself just watch the inner and outer edges of the tire and balance as needed.

Another thing to consider is the weather. Ill usually suggest the BEST tread tires be placed on the front if its a front wheel drive and on the rear if its a rear wheel drive.

I myself like 32 PSI. It allows for a little expansion in the summer and a better bite in the winter. Just my 2 cents.

GoodYear, BFGoodrich and Michelin are great tires.  Already tried those but I am most satisfied with  BFGoodrich for my truck.  :)

I used the BFGoodrich comp TA's and the drag radials on my Mustangs.

I didn't care too much for the Michelin's because the belts would always separate causing a huge bubble and a serious pulsation. Usually this would only happen when the tire was 2/3rds gone, but still...

Goodyear are pricey, but last a long time. Most of the retail tires are a hard compound which sucks for racing, but good for long tire life.

That's my experience anyway..

You are correct Stellar. Having bald tires would make your car slip on the roads and can lead to further accidents. I guess that also implies to other auto parts that whenever you have low-quality parts, you and you're car are in danger.

I use Goodyear ComforTred for my car. its a two thumbs up for me..

Yo People,

Tyre rotation can get confusing sometimes, especially with the current "directional" tyres that are taking over, as they're typically the "better" choice over the standard type tyre. However, this will limit you to only being able to "rotate(?)" your front tyre to rear position on the SAME side...So where does this leave your spare-wheel ?...

Also, it would be wrong to think of SELLC as a theif, as any workshop will have a growing number of "good-used" tyres. How this happens is simple...A customer brings a car in for a service, and is then informed that 2 of the 4 tyres are worn-out, or will be before the next service, and that the remaining 2 tyres have maybe 30-40% tread remaining. A good customer / owner will not think twice about having all 4 tyres renewed, especially when there's the real chance of having mix-matched tread patterns on the car since tyre manufacturers are always up-dating these. This leaves most mechanics the opportunity to use these tyres if they will fit their vehicle. It's one of the "perks" of the job that at least makes up a little for the crap wages LOL!

Always put the best rubber on that you can afford ! And at the very-least make sure that it's up-to-scratch as far as the required speed-rating goes...Your always better off to pay the extra and get something good, then save a few bucks and increase the chances of an accident...The better the tyre you put on, the better the grip...Better grip means better braking before tyre lock up / skidding...Skidding means your out of control...And if your out of control, there's a pretty good chance your going to hit something....bla bla bla...

Cheers,

Rastus

PS Don't skimp out !!! Put the best that you can afford on !
