I have soot build up on the inside of fenders under hood. Sometimes when starting I can see black smoke rolling from under the hood and then it goes away. I am thinking exhaust manifold gaskets??
From the factory the 6.0 engine did not come with exhaust manifold gaskets. It was just straight up metal to metal. You can buy them however and I have seen them leak over time. Be very careful with the bolts, the back one on the drivers side broke on us, however it could have been one of my tech's whom got carried away.
There is also a turbo up pipe as people like to call it. On a 6.0 Turbo Diesel this pipe is about $300 and is almost a work of art. It has little flex pipes welded in and also heat shields. Its nothing like the 7.3 liter up pipes that cost only $10, no the 6.0 turbo charge tube is FANCY. The part number for it is 3C3Z-6K854-DA
If the dealer tells you that the part is only $10 then they are planing on doing the ole bait and switch trick on you. Once you get there and they ask you again they will come out with this $300 monstrosity. Its what happend to me. Talk about sticker shock! Go in thinking I am going to pay $10 come out spending almost $300! LOL
Here are some photos. You should also know that if you need to replace this tube shown you will either have to pull the turbo, pull the trans or pull the cab off in order to access it. You pick your poison.

Bait and switch. HMMM. Being the fact that you deal with Motor City Trucks in Livonia I can tell you from actually being there that that's not true especially with this dealer. Motor City won't look anything up without a vin. Rick,Nick,Jack and Ron are really good parts guy's and you get the best pricing in town from them.
I have gotten two mix ups in all my time ordering parts from there. We are right down the street from them and they are always friendly plus they stay open until almost 11pm during the week.
When I walked in there and they handed me the pipe originally I knew it was for a 7.3 and asked them to check again. Sure enough the part I needed was the more expensive one. Kind of bothered me, especially after the mix up on the fuel regulator, but I still go there because of the friendly and helpful counter people.
Maybe Bait and Switch is being a little hard on them, but you try taking it standing up when your planing on spending under $20 then find out your spending closer to $300. LOL, I think it was an honest mistake, one that I had corrected before I even left the building. Really I knew there was no way in hell that "Adapter" as they call it, could only cost $20, so I have no hard feelings twards them, but I thought I would share so people would know about the big price diffrence between the 6.0 and 7.3 turbo tubes.
I delt with Jack, and he's a pretty cool dude. I would not hessitate to order from them again.
