There has been a lot of talk about the CompCams 306 Roller camshaft. I am installing a few of them in customers engines and I was wondering what people think about the camshaft in terms of idle, performance and such things as road manners.
Since all of the 306 Cams that I am installing are going out of state I have no real way of knowing for sure the true magnitude of this cam, but I can tell you that getting one to work with ported and polished heads takes a bit of work.
Hopefully our customer from Ohio will be kind enough to let us know how it works out for him. Here is the spec sheet for the CompCams 306.
I guess the guys who voted 'This cam rocks my socks' have never run one.
It's USELESS in a daily driver. You NEED 11:1 compression, MINIMUM, as well as 1/3-4" primary tube headers, HEAVILY worked cylinder heads, a 3500 or higher convertor, and a 4.10 gear MINIMUM.
It won't pass smog, doesn't idle, and isn't worth a poop below 3000RPM.
Yeah, great driveability. This cam is essentially USELESS on anything but a track only car. :rolleyes:

I can make an engine idle like shit by knocking a couple plug wires off.
That cam is VERY useless on the street, and not even a very good strip candidate. I have used it before, and experimented heavily with different combos using that camshaft. It is just too much camshaft for any sort of street or low-rpm use.

I try to tell people that all the time; however some guys just wont hear it.
This is my theory,
Its a race car or a street car.
If its a race car you do EVERYTHING to get to the end of that 1/4 mile regardless if it considered obtrusive. Tear everything out ONE THING IN MIND.
If its a street car that someone plans on driving every day then refinement must be key. Keeping the vehicle as enjoyable and fun to drive as possible without crossing the line.
Some people get caught in-between and thats where problems start. The folks whom start in the middle of the two mind-sets are usually the ones whom dont realize their dreams. Some have progressed to the point they are in denial that they are driving a race car on the street; however these people usually take comfort in that fact.
Im no better than anyone else when it comes to horsepower cravings. I have been sat in-between before and what I am saying is not meant to upset anyone, just to say, its easier to make choices knowing what you want to do.
I have a customer/friend whom is right at the line, very large cam in the .560s. Its a manual with a tall gear, real bear on the street to drive. If you dont know how to drive it, you look like an idiot. But if you do know how to drive it, youre going to get a ticket. He would leave it with me for months at a time because he could not control himself. The car is still with us and we are both living in denial about the true intent of the vehicle. He takes comfort in the fact, and I take comfort in knowing it will be at my shop 3 months out of the year. LOL

Lift won't kill driveability as much as duration/overlap/intake grind CL
Check out some of the Lloyd Elliott camshafts...they are GROSS huge. And on like a 107 degree C/L.
will idle like a dog shitting marbles.

I heard a lot about ole' Lloyd Elloit in the past on some LT1 forums. I dont know that his camshafts could be all that great since the last time I read his sales posting he was re-grinding stock camshafts. I also find it odd how he can change the stock CL on a stock camshaft that is being ground. There really is only so much you can do unless you start with a bare cam with X center lobe.
