It is amazing just how well made the 10 speaker sound system is. Many times when we have a parts vehicle the speakers are the first things to go.
While it is true the Becker Grand Prix stereo is less than flawless no one can deny that the speakers are another story. Given the Becker was produced in Mexico there is no real wonder.
The speakers of a Mercedes-Benz are however made in West Germany.
The premium sound system will be composed of many componets. The rear speakers will have almost a 6 inch full range speaker with two high range tweets off to the sides for a total of 6 speakers just in the back package tray.
The Premium sound system will also have front door speakers consisting of two almost 6 inch full range speakers placed in a special enclosure/box. The enclosure is very sturdy and also has brackets that are both bolted and rivited in effort to keep rattles at bay.
The front dash speakers of the Premium sound system are also very nice with capasitors and filters wired into them.
I have attached some photos to help people identify the 10 speaker premium system.
For its day, the 10-speaker sound system was hard to beat in terms of a stock system. However technology rapidly passed MB and Becker by and it was only the early 2000s when MB finally caught up again. That being said, I retain the stock 10-speaker system in my 560SEC, along with a slightly uprated Becker stereo head unit from a W124 (plug and play with the stock BE 1480 that came in the SEC) and had Becker refurbish the unit earlier this year, and add an iPod interface. The sound it provides is still quite excellent and there is no need to replace the speakers with more modern drivers.
I too like the factory speakers and have found them to be more than enough (in premium 10 speaker configuration) to use even with aftermarket head units and high power trunk subwoofers.
I myself hate the Mexican made Becker Grand Prix units and will always swap out a becker for a Kenwood Excelon unit every time. One has to be very skilled and have an extra parts Mercedes to source the factory shielded speaker leads and re-wire the system to accept an aftermarket radio without having alternator whine. It's very tricky and time consuming but the end results are spectacular when the premium 10 speaker systems are mated to a high powered trunk mounted sub-woofer and amp.

As an added bonus, I have always found also that the chicks prefer the sound and refinement of the old-school Mercedes speaker-setups to the boom-boom stereos and video-game head units often used in modern cars.
I myself need to FEEL the music. Many of the modern day songs sound much better with a few 12's and a 1200 watt amp in the trunk. For example if we were to play Modonna's song "Music" in your vehicle, and then in mine, I can guarantee you the chicks would be more impressed with the extra "feel" the 12's will give. It's just a fuller tighter sound. Modern music almost requires 12's to get that "club" atmosphere; only in my MB "club" there is only ONE dude, ME. LOL
When playing old tunes from the 60's and 70's and early 80's I will usually just shut off the subs because the subs actually make these songs sound like shit. That's just because back then music did not consist of much bass.
Now if you are talking about rap music, well yes, most chicks (the kind I like anyway) are put off by that kind of deep low reverberating bass, even though I am guilty of pounding the hell out of some rap songs, not to mention the kids seem to love it too.

Never thought I'd stand to be corrected by the likes of Stoma, but it does appear that they are made in Germany and I have mis-taken the "Mexico" brand as where the units were made.
I even checked 5 of them I have been collecting and it appears they are all made in Germany.

You can keep your cheap tinny sounding Becker "Mexican" stereo! I need more features than that unit offers. While the stereo was very advanced for it's day the Becker "Mexico" leaves me wanting... Sort of like Stoma.
