Air Ratchets

I figured I would toss up an air ratchet thread for all to vote on.

Thru the years I have owned many diffrent kinds of air ratchets, IR, Snap-On branded and Blue Point branded, CH and maybe a few others that were no-namers.

Without doubt the Snap-On FAR72 3/8 Air ratchet is my favorite all time knuckle crusher. While it can really *uck you up fast, the torque and speed of this unit is un-matchable once you have used it a few times and realize this aint no pussy's air ratchet.

Coming in second is the IR air ratchet. While I have never owned any of the newer IR ratchets because my older ones keep screaming away, my FAR72 has spoiled me rotten. Busted knuckles and all.

If you have good things to say about your air ratchet, lets hear it!

Just picked up a Snap-On FAR25 1/4 air ratchet on eBay two months back for $40!

Thing works like new! I think that's the best ever deal I have gotten on ANYTHING SnapOn with eBay!

I could have gotten the matching FAR72 for $70 but I made the mistake of waiting too long on that one...

Good score !

I'd reckon that Snap-On air-ratchet down this way would probably cost around $400:00...C.P. has always been a better score price-wise, at least down this way, & mine lasted a good 4-years before crapping-out. I never bothered replacing it since I was always too polite, & lent-it-out to other folks. So at least 50% of it's wear was from other folks borrowing it lol ! ( I also think that poorly maintained air compressors with lots-of-water forever in the lines didn't help its lifespan either lol ).

Are you sure you need it though ?...1/4"-drive is tiny, & doesn't handle a lot of torque before breaking...I've only ever used them ( regular 1/4" ratchets ) for the hard-to-get-at places like under the dash-board & stuff...I can't imagine an air-hose connected to an air-ratchet getting into those places for my needs at least.

Come to think of it, my 1/4" ratchet is a Snap-on ( black metal one ) that I found under the carpet of a W126 over 30-years ago now lol !

Cheers,

Rastus

A few months a go, I was at a dinner party with many *Snap on Tool* outside sales reps. It must be a great company that have great tools. Those guys had been with them for a ton of years. You could tell they made a ton of money and loved that company. Says a lot about the brand.

A lot of my tools are Snap-On, but I'm kinda partial to Aircat air tools.

Well, I suppose price and the noise factor play a part in deciding which tools to purchase.  Ingersoll Rand used to be a power house name.  Competition is good. We like competition! biggrin

Say, Mr. Stroker...what kinds of things to you like to build with your tools?

Well, I usually fix things that came pre-misbuilt for my convenience.

I did build a billiard ball polisher from scratch though, here it is.

The 1/4 inch air ratchet is very handy when doing smaller nuts and bolts, especially in the case of valve covers, intakes, and oil pans... When you have 20 some small bolts the air ratchet is nice and saves your hand, where a bigger 3/8 ratchet would be just too much torque and speed.

Figures PowerStroker would figure out a way to polish his balls...

 Yo,

I never doubted you'd have a use for it my friend, or you wouldn't have grabbed one ! Be careful that you ( or your Son ) don't break-off too many bolt-heads or strip nuts with its use, that's all I was getting at.

I've only ever used air-ratchets to undo things, never to tighten. Your hands tell you when things are tightened just right, as you well know.

Enjoy that new sucker !

Rastus

Wise words on that Rastus. It;s definitely a feel and indescribable but we know it.  I'm not in the trade like youse people, but been around enough to understand that!

Never had an air ratchet but wanted one since they came out. Farm, 13 IC engines maintained year round does keep me busy enough to think. Hey I want one! Did break down a few years ago and get one of them air hammers mechanics tighten your lug nutz down to where one couldn't break a lug on a flat with a 6 foot extension and still breaking the cross lug wrench as well. Oh yea, love that thing! Ever tried to undo nutz on mower deck  blades one would bow to an air wrench. I used to have to wood block blades. 1 1/8" box believe it was, and an 8# sledge .  Hours! Now? I lift my Zero turn with my 4701 Kubota bucket a foot or so, AIR HAMMER, YEAH 5  inch Milwalkee angle gringer and edge from hell (I am a kinfemaker. www.hermitriver.com) Email no good on there.

Ohhhhh yea, air ratchet. I want one!!!! well, two. 1/4 and 3/8. Ahhh hell. Need 1/2 inch too.
