Canadian Premier Coming to the USA for medical treatment!

The premier of Canada's east coast province is undergoing heart surgery in the United States this week because the treatment he is seeking was not available in his home province.

The announcement about of Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams' plans has triggered a debate since Canada prides itself on its universal health care system.

Kathy Dunderdale, the province's deputy premier who is taking over in his absence, said Tuesday that Williams decided to go to the U.S. for surgery after weeks of consultation with his doctors. She did not say where in the U.S. he would seek care.

Dunderdale says having the surgery done in the province was never an option. But she wouldn't comment on whether the type of surgery Williams was having was available elsewhere in Canada.

It seems to me Obama care may take away the last great thing the USA has... Advanced healthcare.

I think this PROVES that Obama is going about this all wrong! He should be figuring out a way to lower premiums for people and bolster more money for people whom lack insurance. Turning the Hospitals over to the government is not looking like such a great idea, not that I ever supported it.

You don't need to be Canadian.... but you do need to understand the country a bit (something most Americans fail miserably at).

Well help us understand.

My experience with Canada is limited to going over there when I was under 21 to take advantage of their lower than normal drinking age. Just over the boarder I think they call it Windsor and there is this street called Oulette (Im not sure if thats the proper spelling) however Ill never forget the night I went to some club by the name of Bentley's and had too much to drink. Totally wasted I guess I hit on the wrong chick because her boyfriend was this monsterous Canadian whom just happend to be waiting for me after the club had closed. Natuarally, given the stronger beer over there I was disadvanaged and took a fist to the lip. As I walked down Oulette Ave twards the hotel bleeding from my face like Niagra falls not one person thought to mention you guys had free healthcare. Had I known I might have went to the hospital but instead I just passed out and contenued to bleed all over the hotel pillow that did an amazing job of clotting the blood, given how drunk I was.

Since then I havent really cared much for anything Canadian.

If I were the Canadian PM I'd probably fly to the Mayo Clinic anytime I needed any special medical care. The problem with American medical care isn't quality, it's quantity. We have the best healthcare in the world for those who can afford it... Problem is, there is an increasing number of people who can't afford it.

Rex, I imagine your purpose for starting this thread was to drill holes in the idea that we need any government intervention in healthcare, but let me ask you this:

Is it better to have World class healthcare for the elite, or great healthcare for all?

Before you answer, consider the fact that there is nothing elite about you.

Also consider the fact that Canada ranks higher than us in terms of life expectancy and infant mortality, also Canadian citizens pay approximately 1/2 what we pay.

I dont think I need to drill holes in Obama care because it's quite clear the bill has sunk in the past all on it's own.

While I do feel that a basic plan would be good for everyone I dont feel that the power grab for the Democrats/Government @ $200 per month is really going to acheave this. Furthermore should I ever enter the "Elite" status I dont want to have sent our world class healthcare down the socialized river.
