Top GOP aide has ties to Solyndra

Top GOP aide for House panel has ties to Solyndra

WASHINGTON (AP) The top GOP aide to a House committee investigating Solyndra Inc. once worked for a lobbying firm that helped the now-bankrupt solar company apply for a half-billion-dollar federal loan.

Gary Andres, staff director of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, was a vice chairman at Dutko Worldwide until last December, when he was appointed to his current post by Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., chairman of the energy panel. The committee is investigating Solyndra, which received a $528 million Energy Department loan in 2009. The company later went bankrupt and laid off its 1,100 workers.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reported Monday that Solyndra paid Dutko $30,000 in 2008 to handle its application for the federal loan.

Alexa Marrero, a spokeswoman for the committee, said Andres never worked on behalf of Solyndra and was not aware until recently that Dutko had represented Solyndra in 2008.

Marrero said the revelation that Solyndra hired Dutko, now known as Dutko Grayling, does not change the facts of the case.

"Despite serious warning signs from within the (Obama) administration that a federal loan to Solyndra would be a losing proposition, the Department of Energy gave a green light to a half-billion dollar loan to this company, followed by a restructuring that put taxpayers at the back of the line," she said. "Now the committee is asking what went wrong, and what can be done to ensure taxpayers aren't left on the losing end of this kind of bad bet ever again."

John Waltz, a Democrat running for Upton's seat in 2012, said Monday that Upton should have disclosed Dutko's involvement with Solyndra once he became aware of it. Andres should recuse himself from the Solyndra investigation, Waltz said.

You guys are really reaching aren't you PowerStroker? A top GOP "Aide"!? LOL!

An aide is still "just and aide". It was the Obama Administration that gave the green light on the Solyndra loan. Now you are going to come in here with some bullshit that the person who helped Solyndra fill out the application was an aide of a Republican!? LOL! You have got to be kidding!

GTFOH! Maybe your brainless Democratic base will buy that BS but really it's just a pathetic attempt to obscure the fact that Democrats wasted a half billion dollars of tax payer money!

Time after time Obama has proven to be incapable of making this nation money and overqualified when it comes to wasting this nations money. I don't know who is worse, Obama or all the idiots who voted for him.

It's a good thing Obama took up a career in government, because he would NEVER make it as a businessman. The guy has been in office for three years and yet he is still an empty suit inflated with a bunch of hot air. One and done. Nothing will be more rewarding than watching Obama get evicted from the White House come 2012 and the following downward spiral that is sure to follow! Think Tiger Woods but on a much grander scale!

This lobbyist was paid 30 grand to get this deal written into the stimulus legislation... Which is 30 grand more than President Obama got out of the deal.

On who's watch was the loan approved again?

I am a big fan of details. You said Republican Aide, now your saying lobbyist!? Which one is it?

He was a lobbyist, and how he's an aid for the House committee. It was approved on Obama's watch, but you need to understand he doesn't have line item veto power. All Obama can do is veto an entire bill, which he was unwilling to do for the sake of removing some Republican pork.

Pretty soon you will realize, that just because Obama is the most powerful man on the planet, it doesn't mean he is "all powerful." The founders divided the powers of the government, and for good reason.

I have always been aware of the checks and balances that are built into the government, however what worries me is Obama getting that second term whereas it really would not matter to him what the public wanted. I think you fail to realize that Obama is trying very hard to restrain his powers until after the election. Should he win a 2nd term I feel we will all see a whole different Obama, and my gut tells me it wont be a good side of him we will see. That's just the impression I get.

Is it because you've seen this before when George really took the gloves off after his re-election?
