91 420 SEL.... the new guy needing some help!!

Let me start by saying, I am not mechanically inclined.  However, I do know how to follow instructions!  I've come this far by reading posts/blogs/ideas from the internet....as a book by Haynes / Chilton does not seem to exist?!?!?

I have a second vehicle, so I have decided to tear apart this 420 (200k miles) to clean/replace parts if needed.  I began this project because I believe that there is a very good chance the heads are warped/cracked, as the oil looks like a milkshake.  I am in the process of removing the intake manifold and was curious to know if I must remove the camshafts/pistons to get to the heads?

I'm certain that I will have many questions and I appreciate anyone who is willing to assist!

Looks like you are coming along, and while there are a few different ways to take the intake apart at least you are getting familiar with all of the internals.

Not much more left to go now!

Hello SELLC,

I thought for a moment that my question was just to dumb of a question to comment on.  I'm glad you responded as your posts/pictures have helped me a lot...thank you!  I have come to realize that the heads can be removed with cam shaft and all (thank the Lord) to be brought to machine shop.

By the way... I am having a hell of a time removing the intake manifold.  I'm certain that I removed all bolts... underneath the air guide housing as well.. The manifold lifts about an inch and something grabs it... any thoughts or better way to remove would be much appreciated!

Thanks again SELLC... much appreciated!

Sounds like your EGR tube is hanging up. Unhook the tube to the EGR and the bracket holding it to the manifold and I think the intake will come right off.

Also.... what website would you recommend for best price / true Mercedes parts?  Are you familiar with Ecklers MBZ Parts?

Thanks again

I have not yet used Ecklers.

I been using Parts.com for OE parts and local parts suppliers like All Euro and S&G for items needed right away or aftermarket.
