I'm making the switch!

I have decided that my new phone is about 10 times more powerful than my desktop. Plus it has built in spell check. Recently I told everyone about I phoning up the family. Seems what I got (5s) is much more than what a bulky PC offers and a more appealing GUI.

I must admit I have run into some resistance, for example the kids are bucking the outster of the PC and even made bold statements claiming they want PC's for Christmas. I remind them they are holding their Christmas presents in their hands, but they roll their eyes.

Some other resistance in terms of hardware include the rather costly connections for Apple products. Sure there are aftermarket vendors of hardware but nothing as good as Apples stuff. It would almost seem like this whole "My iPhone replacing my desktop" is still in Alpha mode considering I don't see much in the ways of post or kits for sale to do so.

So here is a list of items that would allow someone to replace their power sucking desktop and take a bite out of the Apple.

First you will need a good iPhone such as a 5, 5s or even a 5c rocks the A6 processor.

2nd. You will need a TV or Monitor

3rd. You will need an adapter cable. HDMI or monitor style, they are sold separately but in my case I was to upgrade to a 32 inch from my current 15 inch Sony monitor. This cable allows your iPhone to project on the TV or Monitor at 1080 and also has a port to plug in a charger to keep the battery charged. Cost is about $49 for this cable from Apple for TV or Monitors.

4th. You will need a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. About $80 for both from apple. This will allow you to use a mouse and keyboard.

5th. You will need a software app to attach a non "air" certified program. Yes this bothered me too but for $7 it seems Par for the course considering new versions of windows doesn't allow use of older non supported hardware. At least in this case you can use an old printer.

6th. This is only needed if you really plan to whack the PC all together. A wifi portable storage drive. This will allow you to store all non essential data and access it from anywhere.

I have not completed the transformation but I am only short a few items. I hope this allows me greater power savings, increased productivity and more than anything clears up space and allow me better tools for editing, and making better web sites and information publications. The software included with the new iPhones is pretty much Apples version of Microsofts Office, but Apple does not charge for these tools.

Im still going to have PCs in the house of course, but a PC will no longer dominate my desktop.

Hey SELLC,

Lap-Top computers are the go, they're portable, fast ( while the hard-drive is less than 1/2 full anyway ), & they're super-cheap to buy ! Your boys anyway at least would benefit since they'll need these for school, & at least they'll last 5-6 years or so if taken care of. These phones will be a passing-fad because the technology advancement moves way-too-fast ! What else do you "really" need to do with your phone apart from talking to people ? This is my 2-cents anyway.

Cheers,

Rastus

PS F*** Apple ! Don't waste your time on a product that's grossly over-priced & forces itself to compete with Microsoft. You'll find far-better value for your money elsewhere mate.

It's my opinion Rastus that laptops are going the ways of the dinasor much like the PC. Anymore laptops are becoming tablet PC's

Plain and simple, a laptop can not handle being on all the time. The small compact design has them overheating in any traditional desktop application such as serving and other task that require an "always on state". So really in my eyes a laptop is just as much of a waste as a desktop.

My kids won't need a PC or a laptop for school, with the applications now offered by Apple, Microsoft now has nothing more to offer than Apple. If anything I have noticed Apple software to be as good, if not better than Microsofts. As mentioned in my post above my kids current iPhones will do ANYTHING a PC would with the exception of certian video games. I am not big into video games, but when I was a kid they were cool. Games to me are a total waste of time and I have been tolerating them only as a means to get my kids comfortable with computers, much like my days just before BBS systems took ahold.

My phone is not "just a phone". It's now my computer. It cost more than most computers and laptops. It is NOT a passing fad I can assure you as sometimes my phone is also used to watch HD TV on our big TV. It's used in the car as my stereo and in my pocket while working on cars as my "Walkman". In between it serves as my web browser to check parts prices and availability. It's used for my email and is even being used right now to respond to your post. And yes, if someone calls or text it's used as my telephone. It can even be used as a router to give others internet anywhere there is a signal.

I understand and you don't care for Apple. I can tell by the extreme hatred in your post about anything Apple. I too used to not care for Apple and was a hard core IBM AT guy and a Commodore 64 guy prior to that. But every since the original iPhone I have been impressed. The quality of the hardware and software is stellar given it's small size. I urge you to give it a try for yourself.

If you think Apple is expensive you need to take another look at what a PC cost with software. Then realize the limitations of a desktop or even a laptop compared to something as small as a phone. The iPhone is fast as all hell because it's solid state memory beats the hell out of traditional hard drives.

I am typing up another thread titled "Bill Gates, asleep at the wheel?". In this thread I will explain some things as to why Mucrosoft is going down-hill and why companies like Apple and google are taking customers away.

For now just trust me when I tell you Apple is going places. It's already outdone Exxon Mobile in terms of value and that doesn't happen unless someone is doing something right.

I should also mention that many new video game makers are in bed with hardware makers. Often times this is done to get more money from the end user. Anyone big into video games will tell you this is true. So by that rationale how is Apple any different than Microsoft? Who by the way no longer even makes hardware, except for the X-box which is a game console. Is that what Microsoft will be reduced to?

Hey SELLC,

I don't actually hate Apple at all, it's just been my limited experience with them, through other people that own Apple products, constantly going on about how great Apple is, yet their products were always over double the price etc etc, & as you know, all modern technology is old technology once you've bought something & taken it home for a day LOL ! I couldn't see the point in paying over double the price for something that wasn't completely compatible with Microsoft etc etc, & that was out-of-date just as quickly as anyone else's computer for 1/2 the price ! I do understand that Apple were/are completely virus-free etc etc, but I just couldn't see their value in any way except that they're their own entity, that can run Microsoft as-well.

As for reliability, I can't comment except to say that I've repeatedly seen more broken power-plug sockets on Apple lap-tops than any other brand combined ! However, their re-sale value is surprisingly good, but you'd want that at least for paying top-dollar in the first place !

For me though, the beauty of lap-top computers is that you still have a work-horse / entertainment system available even without the internet. You get a large enough screen ( say 15") to watch your DVD's without feeling like you need a pair of glasses LOL ! All your music can be transferred to your hard-drive so that you don't have to use a CD player etc. You can burn movies & CD's etc. And the quality of some of the speaker systems you can buy for them is really impressive, like for $250:00 you can get top-quality 2.1 or 5.1 surround-sound speaker systems that are as good as anything out there to my ears at least, & there's more than enough volume to be found.

I don't "hate" modern technology at all really, its just that I do think that we're all being fed copious amounts of throw-away junk just so that we can say to ourselves "No, I'm not trying to keep up with the Jones's, I am the Jones's !" LOL !!!

Whatever flicks-your-switch is fine by me, as long as what it is that you're getting yourself serves a purpose ! Besides, you know a heck of a lot more about modern technology than I do, so I'd only sound like a negative stagnant old coote LOL !!! So I better shut-up before I put my other foot in my mouth !

Cheers,

Rastus

It's a good thing to express yourself Rastus. I understand where you are coming from as I too loved Microsoft and the PC.

It's just that in these times it's a pain in the ass to hop from one computer to the next and I am positive that going with the iPhone exclusive will net results and savings in time and money.

Everything you mention above can be done on an iPhone. Sure the max storage for an iPhone right now is 64 gigs but as I have said you can get a $100 wifi hard drive and have everything on the fly on your home network or away. It's taking some getting used to, but I am going to give it a honest try. It's either that or upgrade my PC which as I have said before, I don't like the new Windows 8 OS, so why should I stick with something I don't care for?

Hey SELLC,

My current computer has about 60Gb left of its 250Gb storage space to fill itself up with "priority" Windows up-dates LOL ! Maybe in the next year, when it gets down to 25Gb ( this is where it will no longer de-frag due to lack of storage space ), I'll consider a new i-phone, since maybe they'll have 250Gb storage by then !...Or even better, 1/2 a terrabite LOL !

Cheers,

Rastus

PS Is that 100Gb WiFi storage space "yours" or the NSA's ? See where some technology might be going ?....

It is true that over time storage space on iPhones have gotten larger, however even at 64gb that's a lot of storage space! The WIFI hard drives usually start out at 500GB on up to 2TB now days. I have an older Western Digital 500GB drive but it's not set up for WIFI and stand alone opperation like the new ones.

I think perhaps you are mixing up the WiFi External drives with "Cloud" storage. The two are not the same, as cloud storage is more or less data stored on other servers (usually big companies like Apple and the likes). Cloud storage is "off site" storage, where a WiFi drive sits in your home and connects to your router to allow access by wired and wireless devices.

With regards to the NSA, well it's true they can access stuff... However they could access information on your PC's hard drive just as easy as they could my WiFi Drive, or Cloud drives here in the states. Does it bother me? Not as much as the idea that China may too be hacking my storage! So in a way the NSA does not really bother me, but should I find out people are spying on me for personal reasons outside of national security, then heads will roll.

But hell, if a guy like Snowden can steal information from the government and give it to other countries then I am not to sure how safe anyone is in the digital age, that includes the NSA! I'd like to think they are beefing up security on the WOPR known as the NSA data center but who the hell knows! Keeping data safe is like farting and trying to keep anyone from smelling it... The more you try to hide it, the more it stinks!

Yeah,

You're correct in me getting mixed up with "cloud" storage, I'm familiar with the term, as Avira, my anti-virus soft-ware had me as part of their "cloud" technology survey around a year ago. I did not know that it was possible to have Wi-Fi storage on a remote hard-drive at home. I just thought that to save this stuff, you have to access your cache-memory or paging-file & go from there.

I guess in the past that all of your movements on the net was watched by advertisers etc, so they got the upper-hand in marketing schemes, since they knew what interested people. But now-days, everybody's interested in what you're up to LOL ! And everything you do is saved somewhere for further reference should you get in trouble with the law at some-time. You just want to hope that some-one doesn't hack your ID & start doing stuff that lands you "up the creek without a paddle" LOL ! This is another reason why I'm contented to stay a little behind with technology...Let's wait & see what happens first LOL !
