Resurrecting the dead - W126 560SEL and the insanity of sentimental value...


Most wise people would just cut bait and start with another car, but as you all know how the story goes... The thing called sentimental value is just that - a motherfucker!

That said I have dusted off the leaves from Goldilocks, the legendary 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL that was resurrected back in the early 2000's by the entire family which served our transportation needs thru thick and thin for over 12 years... This immortal vehicle would see every Christmas Tree haul for over a decade and ferry us to places like Ohio, New Jersey and even New York City for New Years celebrations! It is a very special car to me and during the whirlwind the past few years of other suitors she waited patiently while all the other vehicles came and went... This now rusty hunk of moldy steel pulls at my heartstrings and after a bad experience at a Cadillac dealership trying to buy an Escalade I have decided to get her back on the road for winter duty and perhaps much more later down the road if she survives my youngest son who is about to start drivers training next year.

The problem with these old Mercedes is probably the same as they have always been but amplified due to the vehicles age... I have let her go, I have abused her - run her hard and put her away wet... I am 100% responsible for its current condition and for this it has been a bittersweet journey that always ends with me stating unequivocally that this W126 560SEL has EARNED this families respect! I have cut up and or sold cars in better condition that Goldilocks sits today! Take for example the Black AMG clone, this would have been a much better starting point, heck I have a near rust free Macco Blue metallic chassis chilling right this very moment, but it just was not and is not Goldilocks, regardless how many cool period correct AMG parts the 420 had, or how clean the Macco Blue 560 was... 

So this week I have dusted off the leaves and am working to replace the transmission that had lost reverse and 2nd and 3rd gears.. I am down to my last good 722.350 transmission and it is worthy of noting that I got several years out of an old 420 transmission, of which is now kaput and in need of replacement. I will either have to buy another W126 parts car, or start rebuilding one of the 6 cores I currently have stuffed under my bench. 

There is however one major problem with Mercedes that sit outside for extended periods of times... Water leakage and mold! Yes, I have the famous moldy passengers side rear footwell from an obvious sunroof drainage clog which I must deal with. I also have rust taking hold on the underside which I plan to treat with a rust inhibitor and undercoating to prevent any further spread. It is just amazing that after sitting almost two years, with nothing more than a fresh battery Goldilocks roared to life and was more than happy to slip her way to the garage and onto the hoist! 

I had worried that I would have to lose the rear hydraulic suspension for regular shocks as there was a leak back there that looked to be coming from the right rear hydro shock/ram. Upon closer inspection it is just the steel hydraulic line that has given up the ghost

So that is a bonus! I can maintain the factory hydraulic load leveling suspension by repairing the lines! But... The damn fuel lines look like they are nearing the point of leakage too! $HIT! Now it is getting real, but again this sentimental value factor is still stronger than the urge to turn back... For now I am just going to replace the transmission but I will have to run what amounts to all new lines back there, which everyone knows requires lowering the rear subframe to access the fuel lines. Not a real big deal considering I have a hoist, and I do want to treat all the areas that have started to rust anyway, so here we go!

For now the main goal is to remove that tired 420 transmission to make way for the new 560SEL 722.350 unit I have kept tucked away for my personal stash. 

Notice Rex Jr. working frantically in an effort to save his Firebird from serving winter duty at the hands of his Mom and Dad... LOL, amazing how that works.

Here you can see a rodent has gotten ahold of my transmission tunnels fiberglass insulation which I will have to pluck from one of the donor vehicles while the transmission is out. Keep in mind folks, this car has sat for two years and my goals at this time are to just get the rust treated and covered along with getting it road worthy and safe for daily action. Perhaps next summer I can decide what to do about a paint job but for now I just want to go back to the simple days of Goldilocks where whenever I pulled into the local grocery store other people worried about me smacking their doors, than me worrying about them hitting mine! LOL

Wow...

Salted roads are a real pain...

I hope that the corrosion is minimal once scraped-off, & that she gives you another 10-years service !

You can get transmission overhaul-kits SELLC. As long as there's no gear-train noise, it's pretty much a swap-out of seals, "o"-rings, clutches & bands...Check the oil-pump of course, & there should be a couple of dot-marks stamped on the gear-teeth that you have to line-up. Measuring the clutch-packs is straight-forward, & must be done if you've replaced some worn discs etc. Always soak them in trans fluid too over-night, before fitting.

I recommend leaving the valve-body untouched, as there's plenty of ball-bearings & springs etc etc that go ker-boing when disturbed...And generally there's no cause for issue in here as long as clean fluid has been changed-out through its life...

Good luck ! I'm sure that you could paint-her-up yourself up to a respectable level, or at least prepare her so that a trusted friend can paint her over one night, whilst enjoying some JW Blue LOL !

So I got that miserable cocksucker of a transmission out of there... almost forgot how much fun these Mercedes transmissions were..

As I mentioned this transmission I am pulling out is an early 420 transmission - 722.324

I think the 420 transmission held up pretty well and I was getting by with a lazy reverse until the 2nd and 3rd forwards gears went out. At that point I parked the car. Getting everything from the starter and all the inspection plates removed it was not really too bad, after all this is the 4th transmission I have had to install in this vehicle over the 12 years I have driven it. 

Obviously I have a lot of cleaning to do from the leaking valve cover gaskets. I imagine I will throw the new guides on that I have been sitting on the past few years while the valve covers are off. I would hold off on these but clearly the valve cover gaskets have gotten to a point where they are so hard and brittle they really offer no real sealing power until after the engine is warm and by then it is too late as the oil gets on the manifolds and starts burning. The trans tunnel insulation was not rat infested as I had thought, apparently the rag joint on the back of the transmission was rubbing on the insulation as it had fallen down a bit due to age. This makes me feel a lot better and I am pulling one of these off another car so that it will not be an issue after I install the new transmission. 

The new transmission is ready to install now but as mentioned I am going to clean up some of this rust in the trans tunnel and elsewhere before I put it all back in. After the rust is treated I will hit the entire tunnel with some black Rustolium paint. Then it will be time to install the new transmission.

I just re-checked the price of the new Mercedes Maybach S 560 and it is $170,000! LOL!

So unless I sold my house and emptied all my accounts and traded in my Corvette I would not be able to buy a new 560 outright.

Could you imagine payments on $170,000 car? For example @ 3.1% interest on a 60 month loan with ZERO down the payments would come to $3,243 per month not including insurance! LOL! Way out of my league..

But I could easily buy a newer Mercedes (5-10 years old) - so you get my point.

And after your final payment, you'll have paid back close to 195-K, for a car that might fetch 25-K at that time...

This means you've lost 170-K, & your car would only be worth the interest you paid on it with the loan...

Well, it looks like this project is going to be put on hold... Have some water intrusion issues along with serious water damage inside the car that do not merit any further repairs until such time some new interior carpet is purchased. You can read more at this link -

Before I push the beast out I plan on pulling the engine, which currently is just attached with two engine mount bolts. I wish I had known this before I went thru all of the trouble of pulling the trans with the engine in the car!

More or less this was a back burner project that got pushed up to front burner due to that shady Cadillac dealer selling cars they do not own.

I am going to slow it back down, and as much as I would like to be driving the 560 today, I would much rather drive it when in top order. I am used to this car saving me money, and I guess if I wanted to drive around with nasty interior I could do just that, but I dont.

Looks like I will be driving a Firebird this winter... HA!

Bummer...But as a mechanic, I'm sure you're used to this stuff happening from time-to-time LOL ! ( Always on your own stuff too ).

Just grab a junker like I did ! You'll be surprised that not a lot-of-$$$ can get you a reasonable buy...It's only age, & the market that devalues cars.

I'm sure that for 2-K or so, you could get a wagon or something that will go for 3-winters LOL !

Yeah but for a guy like me to put $2k into this Mercedes it would go a very long way! 

I have already found a few cars in that price range but can not stop thinking how much better my 560 would be if I put that money into it instead. Also, anything you buy for a few grand is no doubt going to need work sooner than later, rather put that work into the 560 I think, at least that is my thinking for now anyway. It was discouraging seeing the level of work needed on the interior but after a nights sleep I still feel strongly about the car so I will just have to figure something out. Perhaps the blue 560 would be a quicker route as I originally thought. That way I can spend my time and really do a good job on Goldilocks and then sell the blue one in the summer, or give it to my youngest son who will be getting his license permit at the end of January. 

To be quite honest, outside of an Escalade or newer DTS Cadillac, there really is not anything else I am interested in unless it is a flipper / winter vehicle. 

Sitting behind the wheel of Goldilocks while on the hoist and looking over everything (except the bad carpet lol), I know this is what I would like to drive. I might be going blue for the winter! LOL

At some stage though, take a trip down South, out of the salt-belt, & pick up a good cheap winter car...

Goldilocks seems to get pissed when left sitting too long, so no I do not feel one bit bad driving it. The whole point of fixing it is to drive it all the time, although all the time for me is not a lot really since I work from home. 

I have already said the only garage queen in this house is the Corvette, everything else must earn its keep! Even the Corvette had to pony up by taking us out west and back safely. 

That being said, look at my new winter car until one of the Mercedes is in order,

Well, my son seems convinced that Goldilocks would be best suited placed atop a 1500 or F150 4X4 powertrain... He also claims that such a setup would provide the support needed to cut off the roof and make it convertible...

Fucking damnedest thing of it is, it actually sounds like a good idea! 

Plus, as a bonus - it will really piss off the purist... biggrin Might even put a snow plow on the front of it so that I can plow my driveway in the winter!

Yup... Goldilocks is still sitting on her perch awaiting the day... it's nice now because I have historical plates on it and don't have to spend the $300 it cost to plate them each year here in Michigan.

The insanity is really the moment I realized the speed sensor was holding the entire weight of the 722.350 transmission dangling in the air... followed shortly by a right hook to the face by my son who did not like the tongue lashing he received for leaving the 10mm bolt attached...

These are the things that plunder my mind on sleepless nights...

How the fuck did two 14 gauge wires hold a 200 lb transmission suspended from mid air!? confuse

I have been giving serious thought to pulling ole' Goldilocks into the garage to get her transmission and chain guides installed this week. Been mulling it for the past month but I might have an opening and my recent DOGE coin revenues will allow me a few days to spare. 

I currently have valid historical/classic plates on it, so it would only be like $15 a month to get an antique policy going on it once it's able to move under it's own power again. Moving on it's own power is pretty important at this point since it's been quite awhile. I also had it listed on eBay for awhile, at $4800... and trust me, I don't expect to get that but I am trying to help raise the value for my fellow Mercedes brethern and be able to say to the wife, "Hey I got all my toys listed for sale, I can't give them away" (Roll eyes - lol) but I will have to remove the listing once it gets towed into the bay.

About the only part that I will need to buy is a new battery. Everything else I should have... still havent found the damn interior water leak but wouldn't you know it since I havent been using it there has been no leaks! I wonder if it's possible in the winter that water freezes and blocks the drains on these cars? Very odd as I have had it apart with the carpet out and the headliner down watching all this time and the damn thing just won't leak if it's not being driven! So odd!

Anyway, here's to a little luck that I can get a few days free, at least to get it running. I can nip at it here and there once it can be driven around rather than pushed. If it ends up happening I'll post some photos.

R1. Go for a Heavy Duty lead-acid battery :)....I wouldn't go for a Lithium Iron one lol !

R2. The thought just occurred to me, that your water-leak may well-be condensation from humidity, from your breathing & having the heater on likely flat-out, because its freezing cold...Have the A/C on as-well as the heater, & see what happens. The A/C air is dry-air, & will dehumidify the cabin, & just maybe, rid you of your water-leak, that could just be a result of condensation. You'll lose some warm-air-heat, but possibly no more water leaks :) !

Good luck, I hope you get the old-girl going again, & don't forget about fitting-up those Euro-exhaust-logs either...That way, you'll likely get another 25-or-so Hp to put a smile on your face for all the hard work !

I might have a used battery that I can make fit until such time it's ready to roll, and yes it's lead-acid. I don't think I have seen a lithium ion battery for ICE vehicles yet.

The water was collecting in the rear passengers side foot well, so I am pretty sure it has something to do with the drains freezing up. Never had any problems with water intrusion until the winter time now that I think about it. Has to be a drain freezing.

No go on the logs for now, I just want it up and running on it's own power.

I just pulled it in and it's a real train wreck after having sat for two years! I am just trying not to look at all the crazy cosmetic stuff until I get the damn transmission and chain guides installed so I don't get distracted. Probably spend the night tonight getting all the parts, bolts and hardware in order so I can once again have the kid finish helping me put the transmission in. Last time we got in a brawl pulling it out, I sure hope things go much smoother this time around! LOL

Anyway, here it is... in all her dirt and filth from sitting two years.

You can see the engine hanging forward from the lack of transmission. I already vacuumed out all the leaves and stuff from the false firewall and cowel area, probably blow it all out real good too and perhaps put the guides in tonight. Of course I'll take some photos! Good news is I have all the guildes, gaskets and oil filter on the ready for this job for the past two years.

I'll also have to button up the rear interior that I tore apart looking for the source of the leak but I'll probably give the carpets a very good cleaning while it's apart.

So glad it's now registered as a historical vehicle! Plates only cost about $40 for 10 years and the insurance is under $20 a month for classic car insurance. Might have to call my insurance agent tomorrow and make sure they can put it on quickly before the weekend. Don't have any plans to drive it anywhere far but I would like it to be back in our fleet ASAP. Guess I will have to remove the listing I have for it on eBay now, for the best really... I'd probably get what I am asking currently ($4800) once it runs and drives should I decide to sell later. It's always easier to sell a vehicle that runs and drives because people can drive it home or send an auto transport out.

This ole' girl is in a bad way, let me tell you. I'll be sure to post more soon. Any and all support, back patting or even some snide comments are welcome to keep my motivation up. Twice I have aleady asked myself "what the hell are you doing Rex". 

But I got nothing else to do right now, and I have all the parts so I might as well spend my time on something.

So I got my nuts and bolts in order for the transmission install tomorrow and get everthing else gathered up too.

Looking like everything is there from nearly two and a half years ago so I am somewhat pleased. Also very glad to find the trunk was bone dry with no signs of water intrusion. Seems the rest of the big parts were in there too, and I'm quite glad because I was starting to wonder what I did with my radiator! LOL

Upon making it thus far I figued what the hell, I might as well get going on them timing chain guides! I'm also going to do a tune up and of course an oil change.

What I found next is a sure sign that the transmission failure may have been my cars saving grace because the drivers side inboard timing chain guide was fractured clean in half, with the bottom part just dangling from the lower guide pin! The lower portion of the nylon guide just waiting to fall into the timing chain path and destroy the engine!

 

So it's a DAMN GOOD THING that I am replacing these guides or I think it would have fallen and busted the valves in very short order!

More to come, I'll have better photos of the broken guide when I fish it out of there! Wish me luck!

Well I got my left drivers side guides replaced. I made a few videos that I will add to my other timing chain thread we have on sticky which covers this process in much better detail, sorry this is my car and I am just going thru it quickly as possible. Having said that, here are the two videos I made in how remove the timing chain guide pins that are pressed into the head

And in this video I show how to remove a broken guide without having it fall into the engine

With that out of the way I was able to quickly replace the left drivers side guides and cam sprocket.

They look nice, eh? lol, anyway here are what the drivers side guides looked like once out of the head

I would have had the other side done too but the high powered small magnet of mine seems to be missing so I could not pull out the lower banana rail pin! Not sure if it was me or the kid who lost it, but it sucks and I'll have to buy a new one today.

I am also going to have to pick up a new set of valve cover gaskets as I seemed to have also misplaced them over the years... After that it's time to install the transmission and then I can start her up for the first time in two and a half years!

Of course it won't be finished there as I have some rusted hydro suspension lines to deal with and possible some fuel lines too. Plan on just flaring in some replacement stuff up to where it's clean on that but just so long as it's running okay it shouldn't be a problem.

From there it's the interior and a very good bath inside and out!

Thanks Rastus, it's been a long day/night but I prefer to do this critical timing stuff in the dead of night because distractions at certian stages of this job can lead to serious disasters! Plus I am rather enjoying myself on this one.

I think the guides get brittle with age, regadless of miles. I think 10 years might be pushing it, perhaps it's safest to go every eight. Keep in mind there are still other nylon guides lower in the engine behind the timing cover, and they too can crack! 

I am just doing the uppers because most will agree that if you're doing the lowers you might as well just do a mini-overhaul. While the timing cover can be removed and replaced while the engine is still in the car it isn't pretty, plus the book calls for a complete removal of the engine to R/I the timing cover anyway. We will see, but as you have said the grooves in the guides arent that deep so I think perhaps the lowers might have some life left in them. Fingers crossed! Most of the time it's this left inboard upper guide rail that gives up the ghost and grenades the engine. This is the fourth one I have caught at this state where it was just about to let go.

Guide pin tool is very reasonable on eBay if anyone wanted to get one. It saves a lot of time and pulls the pins nice and straight to where you can easily re-use them.

Hopefully later tonight I can get everything back together on the right passengers side, install the valve covers and prepare everything for a smooth and clean transmission install. Wish I could just change my battery like a power drill and be at 100% but I'm spent.

UPDATE - I tried this site on Microsoft Edge and what you discribe seems to be an issue with that browser. I have yet to find a work around to suggest other than using Apple's Safari browser.  

 

We can't afford an HTTPS subscription for free content. All critical Mercedes information is kept on our servers.

It's a game the internet industry likes to play, changing the rules and browsers every few years to ensure the big players who want you buying new Mercedes keep this info out of your hands and controls the flow of information, just like BW.ORG back in the day, and even today really. YouTube videos work because they are a big box outfit that your browser likely trusts without even asking, why you ask? Because they have big money and are owned by Google, a company that has aspirations of dominating the internet, controlling and monetizing on the flow of information.

I think if you trust our site domain of www.autotrend.us then the photos hosted from our servers will not be blocked.

We do not engage in any commerce on our website so we simply have no need to pay the outragous new internet tax (https) to host our free information. Most of it was paid for by our CD members over a decade ago, but as of late I have been personally footing the hosting bill. Sorry if this is an inconvenience, but it's really your browser that is blocking the images. Hope this helps.

Edit - That is not to say we aren't working on ways to bring this information to everyone by improving our server, by getting our domain set up under the HTTPS protocol, just that currently it is not economically viable for us to do so. Heck, just regular hosting now days is expensive when you're not engaged in e-commerce. It's really sad and I thank you for bringing this to our attention, even if we were aware. Finished up the timing chain guides and installed the valve covers. I did take some photos and even another video showing how to remove the tensioner rail (live in real time). It will take me a little bit to get them all converted and uploaded but I only have a little time before I have to finish up the transmission install because I have a few jobs that will be coming in and I'm getting a little pressed for time. I just need it to start and run so I can move it around under it's own power but that is still a lot of work away. I don't much look forward to all the work installing the transmission but it's got to be done.

Yes, no worries at all. They're all there, very clear, though I must admit that I use "Duck Duck Go" & "Mozilla Firefox" for my internet stuff. Both offer the best privacy, & DDG doesn't track you.

Oh yeah, since Goldilocks has been outside for a few years, I recommend draining your fuel-tank, reverse blowing / draining your fuel filter, & some fresh fuel...I know you have enough to do already, but fresh fuel at the least will help get her started.

Yes I would consider a flush but the odds are that I will have to transfer the entire fuel pump from the blue donor 560 to Goldilocks. 

The one on the donor car is much nicer, but for now I just need it to run in the most crude of ways to pull itself in and out of the garage as my schedule clears. This is the main goal for me, the rest I can pick away at over time.

Moving right along I decided that in the interest of saving time I was going to have to take less photos and videos. There is an incredible amount of work that still remains to get her started but I am closing in and hope to have her started before the end of the week. From there I am going to have to take a break and do a few other jobs.

One thing of interest that I wanted to note was the fact that FEL-Pro's VS50404R valve cover gaskets are just re-boxed Elring 191698

I got the transmission attached yesterday and now I have to finish up on getting it all bolted up and the exhaust installed.

And then after that I have to hook everything back up on the topside of the engine. Still looks pretty cruddy but once I take it to the power wash with some engine cleaner it should look a lot better.

My old body is sore today as I prepare to go out there and do battle with the ole' girl... I don't normally get into such large jobs anymore and I have no doubts that over a year of COVID has me a little out of shape.

All said, I still don't know why the hell I am doing this... I know it's a pathetic form of sentimental value but for the life of me I can't understand why... Back in the days that I drove this vehicle daily with the family things were much more stressful than they were today. If you had asked me back then I would have surley told you that better days were ahead and that I'd never consider the early days to be the best time of my life as mine were extremely stressful running a business while trying to take care of a family of four. But we made it, and I guess in some small pathetic way I just feel like Goldilocks should too.

It's been a long weekend, and I am sorry I didn't get back with everyone sooner but it's just been one ass kicking after another!

For starters, the old core battery I was hoping that would at least last long enough for a boosted start has dead cells and can barely turn the engine over after a five hour trickcle... I blame Rastus' bad luck as spreading to me, so now I have to buy a battery! LOL

But it gets worse! For the past 20 years I have NEVER had to buy a new part, outside of batteries, gaskets and regular maintaince for ANY of my Mercedes... Today may change that as my supply of used alternators has run dry! Apparently the 2nd to last has an issue with one of the terminals and the other one is clocked wrong placing the power terminals in an area that is inaccessible. I could re-clock it, however the bearing sounds spent and who knows if it's any good anyway. The cost of a replacement with lifetime warranty is only $100 so I am thinking of biting the bullet. 

Getting everything hooked up on the underside really taxed my body, but I spent the time and made sure everything was hooked up with proper bolts and washers as it come from the factory. In my younger years I would have sprayed the underside with carb cleaner to "pre-clean" for the final powerwash but in my older days I have decided I'm not into huffing carb cleaner anymore so I just had a smoke instead. I'll clean it with the powerwasher and save the brain cells as I can't afford to lose any this late in the game.

And here is a little tip, if you remove your valve cover gaskets and they are stiff enough to stay erect when holding one end, that means they are WAY past being bad and not even sealing when the engine is cold. I think I may have fixed all the oil leaks by replacing these gaskets because you can see where it started at the valve covers and worked it's way down from there the past 12 or so years. The new valve covers gaskets should be soft enough where there is no chance you could hold them like this and they stay stiff

It's worthy to note that my 560 now has an official late model 722.350 transmission in it, rather than the 420 unit I was running for two years. I wonder if I will notice a difference since it's already been sitting over two years.

But finally I am ready to start the beast once I get a fresh battery from the parts store. I will probably test start it as it sits in this photo to ensure everything is okay before installing the rest of the accessories, cooling system and coolant. Once I know it's good I'll probably button it up with the new alternator.

But it gets worse folks... In addition to the new battery and alternator for the Mercedes I just found out the battery in my Corvette has given up the ghost as well!

What a complete pisser! So now it's TWO batteries and an alternator! ARRRRRAAAGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!! 

I guess I'll just bust out the KY and grab my ankels at this point... I should also mention the wife's Lincoln Zephyr has needed a new AC compressor for the past three months... it's getting louder now that you can roll the windows down...

Explaining this to the wife will be interesting, "Yeah so technically your car wasn't down, but these two need parts RIGHT NOW because they cease to function at all without them"

Sorry about the batteries mate...Heavy-duty lead-acid is the go !!! But somehow I think that battery manufacturers aren't delivering the goods anymore, whereby a new battery could last you 5-7 years...You're lucky to get 12-months out-of-them now-days lol !

100-bux for a new alternator is cheap...100-bux for a new MB alternator is crazy cheap !!! Good deal there imo.

12-years out of a pair of rocker-cover-seals is awesome lol !

I hope she starts OK !!!

Thanks Rastus, the alternator is remanufactured but still carries the lifetime warranty. $105.40 to be exact.

I went with the Interstate Megatron Plus for the Corvette (because it's black instead of green) and the regular Megatron green top @730 CCA for the Mercedes.

Also talked to my insurance agent... $10 a month for full coverage insurance on the Mercedes thru the historical insurance program! So I can take the Mercedes for a good bath the moment she is done if I wanted.

Turned on insurance for the Corvette too... that unfortunately was not $10! lol

So it's time to see if Goldilocks starts! With 910 CA she should spin with ease! Fingers crossed!

Proof of running... Goldilocks officially came back to life Monday May 17th 2021.

I have a few vacuum lines to tend to, and I still have to install my hydro suspension bottle and anti-freeze but otherwise it's running! 

Lot's of little things to do from here, but for now I will turn it loose to the wife who will be in charge of shampooing all the carpets and letting them bake in the sun.

Stay tuned lots more to come after I get caught up with work!

Great news !!!

No doubt there's lots-of-life left in her...

Yes there was some corrosion, but no-one can doubt that MB builds their cars with a whole-heap of heavy gauge steel...That's why they weigh so much I guess lol, but at least they're repairable up-to-a-certain-point.

When you have some spare-time, you should at least pull apart one of the worn-out transmissions, & get familiar with them. I bet there's a market for overhauling them about to grow, as S/H examples decline in availability :) !

It's a little time consuming, but if you leave the valve-body well-alone, the rest is clutches, seals, & a few teflon-sealing-rings that will need replacing. New needle-bearings come with the rebuild-kit, & all the pressure adjustments available are documented.

Place these reconditioned units on your shelf & they'll walk-out the door with good profit margin imo.

Yes Rastus, I have no doubts that I will eventually have to rebuild a Mercedes 722.xxx and GM 4L60-E... Just too few people around I would trust to do that job. In the case of the 4L60-E said transmission started out as a 700 R4 and before that the Turbo Hydromatic... What I know is that in the higher end cars these transmissions got lots of trick parts like oil pumps with more veins and beefed up hard parts. I wonder if the same holds true for the Mercedes transmissions from lower models to higher end ones? We may find out! 

One thing for sure is I would probably never make a business out of it... I'd just do them for myself and people I knew... now days I don't even take in major Mercedes work anymore because honestly it's very rare you find people willing to pay. At the end of the day it makes for a very poor bottom line, much like performance work. It just does not pay and takes too much time. You'll make more money doing smaller jobs at a higher volume unless you wanted to specialize and at that point you would have to do them all to stay in business. That is why they have these things called transmission shops. LOL! They also have these things call oil change shops but I wouldn't know because I change my own! LOL

Speaking of changing oil, when I was just about finished with the Mercedes I went to change the oil and found my drain plug to be stripped! The drain plug wouldn't loosen or tighten! I figure four or five years ago I probably allowed one of my helpers to change my oil and they screwed it up because I would have NEVER left it that way myself! So I had to go into my other garage, roll over one of my core engines and swap the lower pans! The good news is there was no metal flake in the pan and no signs of nylon guides. 

But it was literally four straight days of BS like that in getting the Mercedes back to life... from having to change lower oil pans to finding the proper shifter rod, to finding all the little missing bolts and washers here and there... alternators, batteries, plugs, exhaust surprises and even a rather terrifying battle with a yellow jacket that seemed to have made Goldilocks her new home! She must have been the queen because she was massive and had a heavy bass sound as her wings propelled her thru the air! She was also very tuff, it took 10 shots of carb cleaner to get her down on the floor to squish her! A few times she litterally flew directly into the stream to get at me before turning back! Could have been a murder hornet for all I know! LOL

Goldilocks now runs and drives, plus she is insured. I did have one last issue to deal with before I drive it to the power wash and that is the pesky hydrolic suspension line that is shown in the very first photo in this thread (quoted in this reply). I put a pan under the line and run a few quarts of fluid thru it just to clean and lube the componets so it would be safe to run between the two houses that are next door. Right now I am fixing a customers Toyota and I have a few others to catch up on first. This job on the Mercedes really kicked my ass though, it was one thing after another along with the funk of over four years of sitting. The muscle pains are just now starting to subside! LOL 

No doubt between now and the weekend I'll be able to slip old Goldilocks in and make short work of that rusted out line. Since Mercedes has super fancy connection flares I'll probably just flair in some bubble flare unions and replace the rusted section and call it a day so I can get to cleaning up the rest of the vehicle. No doubt I'll be back in the area soon to deal with a fuel leak somewhere in the lines or pump unit itself but I have another one at the ready and I'll cross that bridge once we're over the hump.

Oh by the way, there was absolutely ZERO gas in the tank when I went to start it... IIRC when there was a power outage for a week I jumped the contacts at the FPR (Fuel Pump Relay) and sucked out every last drop to power my generator. LOL

I realized this after having to hunt down the FPR in the other garage when I noticed the pumps weren't kicking on during key cycle. Went to check the FPR and it was missing, thats when it dawned on me.

So no worries there! Put five gallons of fresh premium in her.

It's funny how time flies... at the start of this thread I was talking about how it was down for almost two years and it has been two years since I picked up where I left off on this thread... so really Goldilocks has been sitting for over four years rather than the two I mentioned earlier. Just thought I would mention that. Time flies and Goldilocks has been most patient!

In the interest of fairness, I have listed Goldilocks on the market at $6500. So even sentimental value has a price around here, LOL.

I'll still be working on her, but honestly even with the inexpensive insurance I can only drive and maintain so many vehicles! 

And I at least have to keep up the apperances that I am collecting and not hording. Plus it helps to bump up our inventory totals, as in assets that are insured to value and not only marketable, but on the market.

Besides, at that price it's going to take someone with deep pockets and a genuine need and appreciation for what it is... and of course, INFLATION! LOL

No refrence to this thread is made where it's listed, so only the insiders know the backstory. 

At minimum it helps to keep the value up on the cars in much better shape with much fewer miles. I'd like to think I am helping, while helping myself as well. 

I only say this because I know I'll be the topic of some lame BW.ORG thread entitled "Today's interesting eBay Ads" or something like that.

It's really a pretty good deal considering that 560 engines are selling for $4500 on eBay and often times this does not even include the fuel injection system! It's also not proven that they run, and none I have seen come with brand new guides let alone a transmission.

You can also buy stripped down long blocks, basically "core" engines, for $1500-$2000...

If I ever come across a really clean body SEC, SL or even an SEL that had a devistated engine I'd seriously consider swapping this engine over into it and getting another 10 years out of one. Best part is they can now be plated and insured as classics. Here in Michigan they are VERY expensive to register and plate as a regular vehicle.

I seen a newer used S560 engine selling for $22,000 as well! That is some serious coin! Can't believe that Mercedes come out with a new S560 and the damn thing only displaces 4.0 liters! What a joke!

R1. Agreed, but I reckon now-days, if goldilox was totally black, like the 420 you had a few years ago, she would have sold already at that price.

R2. Cool !

R3. I'd go for the SEC, simply because an SL, even though they look cool & have detachable roofs, are probably a little too small inside imo. I'm a little over 6-ft, & should the seat have your typical MB sheep-skin-seat-covers on, I can hardly get into one since my legs hit the steering wheel, & you have to force yourself in there. You'd likely have more room & comfort in your 'Vette. I doubt I could go more than 2-hrs in a 107 SL without needing to stop & stretch out. SLC's are much better in this aspect, but I'd doubt there's too-many-of-these floating around where you are, so that's why I'd say that the SEC is where to go. They still look very up-to-date, & have aged very well imo, especially with the 15'' wheels, since these offer lots of replacement options, & a huge range of tires to choose from.

I'd look for a good 380SEC, as you'd likely find 10-of-these to one 560SEC, & transplant away.

R4. Why MB changed their approach in the meanings behind their badges is just stupid, plane & simple. Idiots !!!...

Honestly I'm pretty sure it's going to be Goldilocks... I could list her for a million dollars too, don't mean anyone is going to buy her! But it gives me reason to invest more time and a few extra bucks from time to time.

That being said, and in true Mercedes fashion, Goldilocks has given me another punch to the gut... that hydro suspension line I was telling you about? The one I was just going to "splice" a piece in? Yeah that was wishful thinking!

All the lines to the valve and the three way are pretty much absolute shyte! The only way to tackle this is to knock out ALL the lines to and from the fuel pump and the hydraulic  pump, valve, accumulators and rams! 

A real kick in the ass... but honestly I like the hydraulic ride much better than the regular shocks so I guess I'll have to grit my teeth and collect some extra parts to tackle this job. The pumps work so it would be a shame to waste them if they can be saved.

It's got me to thinking... Maybe I should put that blue one back together after this? It would mean fixing a once valve bender core and a smoked transmission, but otherwise I have all the parts twice over to complete another one!

I know... I know... one thing at a time! But I got to thinking about it when I was mulling just cutting everything out of the blue one and putting it on the gold one... but why? If I can save everything on the gold one and just run new lines and put a few rubber bits in, why not save the other real clean stuff in the blue one incase I get hankering for another old fashioned Mercedes ass kicking.

Sometimes it helps to think about an even bigger cluster fuck to help get you over the cluster fuck you're already in the middle of.

Fingers crossed that the self-tapping-screws that mount the lines to the under-body have something their to bite back into !
