AAA: Cold weather can cut electric car range over 40%

AAA tested many brands of electric vehicles, including Tesla, and found that at 20 degrees (F) the range of a Tesla decreased OVER 40%! This is at only 20 degrees (F)! I would imagine that number would shoot up to 50-60% range loss for days at below zero (F) temps!

Obviously the heater is what really zaps the range on these vehicles, but the idea that an electric car saves money can be a real joke depending on the climate your electric vehicle has to operate in.

That being said, electric vehicles have a LONG way to go in my opinion.

I read something about that back a while ago. Think take your cellphone outdoors on a very cold day. It zaps the lipo battery, I believe that is a problem with cold on a lipo besides the heater drawing so much.

My Buddy has the Model 3 think it is, rode in it. Very cool. He lives in Bremerton Wa, western side is usually 34-40 in winter from what I remember. Spent many there, close to 20 years. Yes it will blast below that a week or two but usually should be lipo friendly

Pah-leease Shawny!

In less than 10 years these cars will be the equivalent of the "Le-Car" of the 80's...

Nothing ascetically appealing about them, other than the exterior door handles which have been reported to freeze up frequently in the cold temps.

Looks like some dip-shit just stuck an oversized iPad in the center of the dash and everything else looks low budget in terms of styling.

And then there is the cost! I'd much rather buy a gas powered vehicle that is 100X cooler than a Tesla for almost half as much!

I'd imagine the first time a Tesla owner drove to work and realized they didn't have enough energy to return home would have been that moment that they realized they got suckered!

People buy a Tesla for the same reason they buy any other vehicle, for transportation! When that primary goal becomes an obstacle many who shelled out big money for these cars won't be happy! Good for Tesla that many of the people who would buy these cars are liberals who will go to the grave with the truth before publicly looking like an idiot telling the truth!

LOL

Don't know man. Liked his car alot, but he is 70 and retired in West WA. Prob works very well for him. I guess he loves it from what I saw. Even driving it here from WA and back. No biggie, few charges.

Yes all this electric needs more to go. So what, look what happened to 1900's technology. Get used to change, accept what you normally wouldn't. HUH!?

It does not matter to me one bit if I am bolting in engines or motors... They still have to bolt it on to a substructure with a suspension - brakes and HVAC system!

So what!? It does bother me they will try and lock the tech down to prevent other people from working on them but eventually, like everything else - the technology will be hacked and the independent will be stuck fixing these cars.

What you think is super high tech and fancy now will be an outdated old POS beater in 10 years! Even more so with these cars because apparently they can brick them once they feel their "lifetime" threshold has elapsed - just think of an old web-cam or such that is no longer supported do to a software end of life campaign. Sorry, it might work fine but its time for a new version! Just like Windows and any other software based system! That is where regulation needs to step in to ensure the aftermarket can re-program these things and keep people in their cars longer for less!

You're one of the first I have ever seen distinguish between an engine and a motor! I'm not saying it cause most don't know or can't distinguish, but in hopes they get it! Motor=electric, engine =combustion. Had a friend, a girl retired GM. Like 30 years! Never knew the difference in a 2 stroke or 4 stroke says that THEY always called it the "motor shop" Even after explaining to her 'motor vs engine' no spark of intelligence.

I still find myself calling an engine a motor on occasion... you are right that most people don't know the difference so obviously I use it loosely hoping someone might one day correct me... so far it's only been one person, the assistant to my High School Auto Shop teacher -- he was VERY picky about it... had a melt down any time someone called an engine a motor... lol, so people would just do it on purpose to get a rise out of him.
