Purchased Corvette #2 this week!

I couldn't help myself... having put so many miles on my red one it was clear that I simply enjoy driving Corvettes, in fact - ALL CARS SHOULD BE A CORVETTE!

So now I can keep the miles off my red convertible and drive this beast, which we have named Casper, in all sorts of weather and without guilt. Plus it allows me to cut my teeth on the repairs before the red one needs them. Currently has 151,000 miles on the clock but runs pretty good and is reasonably clean for the miles. Best part is that it still feels every bit a Corvette but without the guilt! Got a good price on her so if I ever do part with it I should do okay even after putting a little money in it. The kid has already blown the rear end out of his Firebird so he's been a pretty happy camper too since the arrival of Casper the friendly Vette!

Thanks! Just picked up some new tires for it yesterday as well... Seems these rims are off a later C5 Corvette so the sizes are a little different than my C4!

In fact, the front tires are 17 inch and the rears are 18's! 225/45ZR17 and 275/40ZR18 to be exact.. I figured they would be even more expensive than the tires on my C4 but I was plesently surprised that I picked up all four brand new for less than I spent on just the back tires for my C4! I spent over $330 for the rear tires on my C4 which were 285/40ZR17's - I got the entire set front and rear for LESS THAN $300 brand new! Of course that wasn't a name brand but I have had good luck with the Achilles tires on customers cars and the Lincoln so I figured what the heck!

Paid $129.97 for both front 225/45ZR17's and $156.50 for both the rear 275/40ZR18's! That is a total of $286.47 for the entire set of four!

Thanks PS, I hope to but going really slow. Can't do shit. Tried to pick up my little dog off the bed put him on the floor, pain hit, dropped him on the bed, he bounced and fell on floor. 2 times his height or more, poor little guy. I don't know how I will keep up with the simplest chores around her not to mention the tractor chores!

Damn Shawnee, that is a tough break! I hope you get to feeling better soon! Remember Herc from DH and how he always claimed a tractor ran over his head? At least you faired better than he did, we hope anyway!

Hopefully you can manage a way to keep the Corvette but if it's time, it's time. I have mulled it on occasion as these cars are somewhat impractical in inclement weather, which pretty much means all winter long and half the summer due to rain. They aren't cheap to plate, insure or upkeep either! Then there is the constant worry and upkeep that takes its toll mentally while it's not even being driven - never mind the worry whenever you do drive it, or have to park it in public. The kid is really enjoying this new C4 as he's just 17 and can't even afford to pay attention let alone worry about anything but chasing the muff around. Ah, the good old days! Enough to make even me start feeling old! Let's face it, were not getting any younger! Recently I had a really bad allergies to the point of a sinus infection! It was horrible as my neck and face were hurting and I was really out of commission until they forced me to goto the clinic! They said I had high blood pressure at the time 156/106 but recently I have been checking it at 151/94 so I must have been a little worried at the doctors. Still that's a little high so I need to work on that as I am sure the smoking, boozing isn't helping that. Working on cars you are constantly aching from the ridiculous positions required to perform repairs more often than not. I really feel for you Shawnee as it drove me crazy being laid up recently - so much I was even looking into life insurance, which is a scam if you're a smoker at 3-4 X the cost of a non-smoker. Plus they want exams with blood and something like $160 for the wife and I at $100,000 death benefit for a 20 year term. I found that ridiculous for only $100,000k coverage since most people go with $250-$500k and they get all in shape for their first exam and rate in for literally $60 per couple and then let themselves go again while honest people like me get the shaft. Sorry about the rant but I was really feeling like crap and I have never had allergies that kicked my ass like that before! I was thinking maybe it had something to do with the super bloom or the optimal blooming conditions all over the country this year.

How did you manage to dump the tractor? I know it's very common on a farm as them tractors are very dangerous!

Thanks, I am probably going to have to let one of them go sooner or later... The wife said I can't sell the Lincon and the kid said he isn't parting with his Firebird or the truck which isn't even in the photo and it's banged up pretty good.. makes a good work truck though. So that leaves me with this white Corvette and this Red one and I don't want to part with either. Currently I have to rotate them around on insurance because I can only afford to insure two at a time for daily use. I keep storage insurance on them otherwise and that is pretty inexpensive and allows me to call anytime 24/7 to turn them on and off as needed. It's very expensive here for car insurance, they claim the most expensive in the entire nation! So it's a dance to juggle the collection, especially with a younger driver in the house! I still have two Mercedes but they qualified for the historical plates awhile back and are good for 10 years and only cost $30 which helps out a lot considering they are $350 for plates every year otherwise!

Thanks Sell, really sucks. I'm down for I don't know how long. Low back, shooting pains all the time. Of course they give you 1.5 to 2 days percs is all. On top of it haven't shit in 8 days and nothing working! Gotta call doc again I guess.

I was moving dirt, on a slight incline not even 10%. Raised the bucket some to dump it and over I went. Yup, Herc was lucky too could have been worse like dead!

I've had sinus probs all along too, lots pollen in this area, year round it seems!

Life ins a problem. I got a 10 year plan 2010, up in 2020. $160 a year for $50K but when it ends in 2020 it becomes outrageous priced.

$160 per year for $50k policy! OMG that is cheap! Mine was $160+ PER MONTH for the wife and I for a $100k policy! Apparently that rate increases substantially once you cross the age of 45 and 50 especially if you're a smoker! When you term does end I can guarantee you that a new health exam will be required before they give you a new rate quote. For me it would be much less expensive to quit smoking for a year, then get rated - because that is obviously what all these people do when getting their $250k-$500k policies. And you also have to realize that once you're dead - you're dead... You can't really fight the insurance company at that point and you would be leaving your loved one with a long protracted battle with the insurance company - and trust they would require a full autopsy at the time of death to ensure you didn't have anything in your system that would void the policy! That being said, there has to be better options.

It is a shame all the drug addicts are really fucking things up for people who have genuine pain. A long while back I had a tooth pulled and they only prescribed me 6 Vicodin and said "oh they could be habit forming"... WTF!? It cost more to fill the prescription because they charge a minimum fee to fill a script, so I was actually being gouged for the cost of the pills since six of them was way less than the minimum fee to fill the prescription! Same thing when I went in recently for that sinus condition that was giving me headaches like my head was in a vice, when I asked them for something to help that they simply said to use over the counter Motrin and Advil! What other choice did I have? For me their was NyQuil, which just knocked me out but it was better than dealing with the pain. I am so glad that I am thru that now, but I feel you with regards to them not giving you enough medication to comfortably make it thru the pain. This is because some people abuse them, or take them for recreation which enriches the black market and dirty doctors who prescribe them - but honestly it's gotten out of hand now to where doctors do not feel comfortable taking care of their patient with an adequate supply of pain meds. The doctor knows you will soon be back when in pain, so it's just a win-win for them.

You'll have to use more care with that tractor next time, and I am sure that the downtime is only serving to make you worry about all the things not getting done while you are down. I have found in these circumstances it's best to cut out weeks at a time to ensure the basics are met and not worry about the rest or it will take its toll on you.

Yes very cheap for ins. I was in Maine. 99 or 2000 when they approached me. Had to have in home physical think blood test can't remember. No smoker. 20 year policy at that price fixed. Guess I was mid 40's then.

Pain meds in KY are almost unobtainable. They have the KASPER law because so many abusers. You can get short term like 10 or so but need more you go to a "pain clinic" They can call you in at anytime for a pisstest and or pill count. Any infraction at all like NOT having in you what and the amount perscribed your out. I got fired cause smoked some pot, not much but enough to show 6 weeks after none. Yup I got the lecture when I got the RX for 10 percs, "don't sell these, give them away etc" See doc tomorrow, hope she gives me more. It's pretty bad, last night horrible. Back was going into spasms and cramps by itself and waking me up with a yell. Fractured vert impinging on the nerves, sux!

Yup, worried with all the shit to do. 2 acres to mow, weed whacking, bush hog, garden? I can't pick up a gallon milk still. Can't move the battery core to get a new one for Vette! Wouldn't be able to get in and out of it anyway. In the words of Al Bundy, "can someone loan me a quarter for a bullet?"

You'll get thru it, just prioritize everything. Nothing wrong with keeping the miles low on the Corvette, and there is nothing wrong with putting some money in your pocket either - especially if your health will prevent you from enjoying it!

We are pulling for you Shawnee, and remember - it's true when they say them pain pills can become habit forming. You don't need a habit on your plate too!

If I could quit smoking things would be better, yet I still smoke! So ain't nobody above their vices...

Thanks Sell, yup gotta line up all my ducks here. Saw doc, wants me to see Ortho, so did ER doc but didn't go. Good ortho, did my AC joint and rotary cuff about 8 years ago. I was told no cure by the ER doc on the fracture so why bother? She wants him check it anyway, they have methods like shooting cement in the vertabrae etc. Not to fond of any of that shit but don't want paralyzed either. OK I'll go see him. He likes me anyway. Day after shoulder surgery he told me I can have the PT remove all bandages, nerve drip (Internal tube from neck to rotary cuff, didn't work anyway) etc. PT wouldn't, so I did, and when I saw the ortho less than 48hrs after the operation, he says "wheres the nerve drip, cast, bandages... Told him they bugged me so I ripped it all out, he loved it. 3 days PT a week 3 months! They thought I was awesome too cause no whining, ball of fire on anything they wanted to to tackle.

Least she gave me more percs and flexeril! Lucked outwith her been my doc a few years, good thorough doc.

Been there done that on the opiods and booze, I know better. Spent 5-6 weeks in a VA hospital dryout. Then I stayed dry for 3 years. I fell off the wagon and have some pills not but NO EXCESS.

I quit cigs 1979. Started up again couple years ago, no reason why cept maybe everyone in KY smokes! Quit again Jan this year, first week. I do like a chew or cigar but haven't. Lttle herb now and then, very little.

I have Bose in the 1996 Convertible, it's okay but nothing like what you can get from a high end aftermarket system. Plus the older systems do not allow for the use of an iPhone to play music, so you're limited to cassette, CD or AM/FM in many pre-2010 vehicles.

I finished the install on this car and they system absolutly POUNDS! It's amazing and really increases the enjoyment of the car not only with the sound quality and deep bass, but also in the cosmetic department as the monitor really looks a whole lot better than the old system. This particular system in this car was not a Bose, rather just a plain Delco but it's speakers were almost 20 years old and the sound quality really lacking. Just changing the speakers would not have even given me what I was looking for, although they used 8 ohm speakers in the original Delco systems, you would be hard pressed to find that kind of speaker - and even if you did it's not going to sound as good as an aftermarket system set up properly.

Bose makes some really nice speakers and equipment, had one in my Cadillac which had a 12 inch woofer from the factory. It sounded real good, but not like what you can get in the aftermarket.

And here is the secret sauce, which by the way POUNDS!

Also nice is the fitment, and the fact that your one piece removable roof-top will still fit in the back hatch area without any interference!

Also got a "Kenwood" logo to go across the top of the windshield since all the components, head unit, speakers, amp, and subwoofer at all matched Kenwood components.

VERY happy with this setup and the price was fair although I have been collecting this system since I got my red convertible C4.

I am going to check on an insurance rider for it since I don't wish to have another Miami repeat on my hands! Very upset with the insurance companies here in Michigan right now! Way too overpriced for Corvettes! $180 a month, and that's as a 2nd car with low miles!

Awesome....

There's something really appealing about white cars...Not sure what exactly, but they lend themselves to looking like "sleepers", & are easily over-looked by most folks eyes...

Enjoy that new stereo ! You'll need around 40-hrs of use before the speakers fully break-in, & then it "should" sound heaps better again. All the frequencies register evenly after this time, as there's a component known as the "spider", that has to be played-out so that the resin that it's dipped-in during manufacture, fractures & breaks-up, creating further movement, & so releasing these extra sound frequencies...

$45:00-a-week for insurance is a rip-off IMO. I hope you find a better plan. That plan probably costs more than the amount of gas you put-in-it a week lol !

When are the video's being posted ?

And here is his first time ever drag racing at the track,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxtsEPdE544

He pulled a 14 flat in the 1/4 mile with a one second reaction time which means he could have easily gotten down into the low 13's with a little more practice. It started to rain after that pass so they rescheduled the race to June 28th which is right around the corner. He now knows how to torque up the car with his foot on the brake and also to leave when the 2nd to last light flashes on the tree so I will be interested to see if he does better this next time. We also got some new tires this time around.

We were actually burning off the original set that came with the car which were about shot anyway! LOL, so the new ones are still new! Unless of course they decide to re-do the burnout competition on the 28th then of course we may loose a few thousandths LOL!

Here are his two runs, which we hope will be down to mid 13's or even possibly a 12.9 come the 28th of June when the race resumes due to rain that day.

The good thing is that the car is very consistent as you can see, within .010 of a second on both passes which is ideal for bracket racing!

That's is a really respectable result IMO. Regardless of the ET, to have a street legal car, & have it pull just shy of 100mph in 402 meters is a fast car in anyone's language !

Over-taking on the Highways must be awesome, at any speed with that much power.

13's are quite possible no doubt. Lots of time-honored skill needed to stay in that bracket, especially to get into consistent 13.5's.

I can't wait for the 28th !!!

Added the Kenwood sticker to the windshield yesterday! I am about an inch off but it's barely noticeable I think. It was my first time applying something like that to the really curvy windshield of a Corvette.

Thanks Shawnee, the kid installed the drilled and slotted brakes yesterday so I am checking to see if any photos were taken. He was also going to install the tires but it would seem I ordered the wrong front tires! I ordered 225/45ZR17's instead of the required 245/45ZR17's so they literally wouldn't even seat in the rims because they were too small. The new front tires should be here tomorrow but then again so should the rest of the parts so he will have quite a busy day! More photos to come, and the 28th is just around the corner.

Well today was the 28th and the Battle of the Schools was back on. This time I did not attend because I didn't want to be that 5th wheel - even though I was completely dragging ass from getting off a two day camping trip.

Kid claimed to have had a good time and it was a scorcher today with near 90 degree temps and humidity off the scale! Best he could muster was a 14.3 in the quarter mile with the new tires, stereo and brake kit.

I am pretty sure the loss of time is due to the extreme temps as he claimed it was running hot from sitting, and this even keeping the hood open while waiting to stage.

All I know is it's a street car, and while I would like to improve the performance it has more or less turned into a daily driver, and with the outrageous insurance I get raped out of every month I don't want the car limited to just racing.

The new tires really smoothed out the ride and the new brakes not only look great, but they no longer make noise at low speeds like the old ones. Just amazing the ride difference with new tires on these cars since they really can't be rotated without taking them off the rims and moving them around. Even then the fronts are a different size than the backs so it's not like you can ever rotate them properly anyway. Seriously considering buying another set of these tires while the cost is so low! Seems the older the cars get the more they charge you as I paid more for just the rear tires on my C4 tires than both front and rear cost me for the C5 rims! I don't understand that, but I suppose Nitro's are more expensive than the white label brand I got for the daily driver Corvette. They are still ZR rated and they look and perform great.

All told it's been a fun little car and the stereo really is nice considering most every C4 you will ride in won't have the modern sounds and connectivity of the newer units. You can only listen to the same CD for so long before you go nuts, and leaving your listening pleasure up to the radio stations will ensure you spend more time listening to advertisements than anything good. That being said, it may have added some weight to the car but it was worth it.

Recently had to replace the power steering pump and line due to an odd leak. That was a lot of fun as the new aftermarket lines do not route like the originals, which of course are NLA. I'll have to whip up another thread for that little adventure so other people know that the aftermarket replacement lines are nothing like the originals.

Good work !!!

How do you find driving these babies around town, with so many trucks, vans & 4x4's cutting-off your vision ?...It would annoy the heck-out-of-me not being able to see the road !

Well to be honest you don't think about it much once you get in the car. The C4 is the hardest car to get in and out of but that makes the feel behind the wheel unlike any of the other Corvettes.

Since we don't drive these cars in the winter it's not much of an issue, although you have to drive knowing better than to tango with a truck or SUV. Most of the time they just look down on you in envy - at least during the summer.

I love the way these cars ride, and compared to Ferrari and Lamborghini in the same era the C4 has good road manners and can be every bit as fast as the supercar crowd but without the outrageous maintenance costs and schedules.

What good is a car if you can't daily drive it? Don't see many people driving cross country in exotics.

It's been a good car, lots of little repairs here and there due to the 155k miles but nothing out of the ordinary. Just a fun car that has a lot of potential.

Well, here are the latest pictures of the Corvette with the new alternator, power steering pump + high side hose and of course the brake kit and new tires. Rides out real nice, too nice actually as the kid wiped out the AC clutch spinning it out like a pecker!

Only have to replace two more seals on the targa top, along with that AC compressor clutch and she should be standing tall.
