Toyota Tundra 2001. Remember back a bit I had bad coil pacs and one never got OK (7). Mechanic found a splice to the coil pac, no crimp, nothing, twisted and taped. They had spliced a wire in, he removed it and never another problem. Except that hit the remote, it starts then dies.
Me thinks that extra wire told the remote start module keep running. I'm kinda afraid to just add a wire to the coil pac but that sound about right?

OK, gonna look see tomorrow. I just got a feeling the remote module needed to know the coil pac was firing. Which it wouldn't if the wire was removed. Hope he didn't cut it off at the module.
Remote start needs to know when it's running for sure, if it come off the coil it was being used as a signal for sure.
Best bet is to find the actual module located probably under the dash but not always. Once you find it there will be a name and a model number on it, search the internet for that model and use the wiring diagram and you won't have any guesswork.
I don't care for most aftermarket remote start kits that are installed with scotch-locks or other such problematic wiring methods. The potential for failure down the road is greatly increased.
But if you are driving a vehicle that did not come factory with remote start you have little choice but find a quality unit and have a good installer do the wiring. Even then they are a pain to work with when electrical problems arise in the area that they are connected.

It's after market. Haven't looked yet but think it was like a ball, on the firewall where brake stuff usually goes. Quit when he snipped that wire, got to be it. I'm gonna try and check it out today. Hit the remote start it starts and dies so that HAS to be it, doesn't know it's running. The wires were just twisted and taped, real professional. Toyota up there in Mass is terrible. They stripped her bolts on the skid/oil pan, cross plumbed radiator and trans somehow, trans cooler I think, just a terrible dealership. Clown inherited it.
Yup, that is the RPM signal wire the rem start system needs. It needs to be hooked up to the NEGATIVE side of a coil btw... So If you unplug one of the coils, then turn the key on, use a 12v test light to see which pin has power, then splice it in to the OTHER pin.
Thanks Powerstroker. It was number 7 coil pac. It has 2 splices on it after the mechanic removed the remote wire. I can't find the wire or the module. Aftermarket, wife says it was a bday gift after she had the truck. I can check that wire easy enough just need to find the other end! Wife says there are 2 toggle switches one for the alarm, one for the remote. Maybe I can follow the one for the remote and find it. Wish the mechanic that got rid of it thought it out, it was obviously there for a reason.
I was thinking about it the other day and another way to get your hands on the wiring diagram might be by looking at the remote and seeing if it has a part number that can be crossed to a particular brand or module.
Also, if the system still works (except for the remote start) you could put your ear near the bottom of the dash and press the buttons which might actuate some relays in the unit to indicate it's general whereabouts.
One thing is for sure, even if you decide to install a new one the old one will have to be removed. IIRC they run some pretty good deals now days on them remote start kits that include installation! At least up here they do.
It must be getting cooler down there if you're thinking about getting the ole' remote start going... I know in the winter remote start is real nice to warm up the car on them cold mornings!

Been so busy with chores around here no chance to look again, not real good anyway. Gonna try to chase from the switch. I'm 75% deaf so hard to hear even a click but I can try. The engine will start but not stay running. I'm sure Powerstroker was 100% on with it needs that coilpac signal. Just can't find the damn wire the mechanic snipped. Got a feeling he tucked it in one of the harnesses. If I can find that, I got it made, know where it goes.

Yes, fixed. Power mentioned the neg side of the coil. I thought so, my mechanic thought so. He called a buddy does these and the guy said + side. We didn't think that sounded right, it doesn't. I agree with PS, neg side. Buuuut it didn't work. Swapped to pos side, works correctly. I still don't understand why or get it.
