426 Chrysler Hemi V-8

Hey folks,

I've always been a fan of the legend that was the 426 V-8, with its claimed 426-hp & even more lb/ft of Torque "as is" from the factory, way back in 1969-70...So when I watched this little video from Nick's garage, I was really impressed to find out that the engine produced just under 500-hp, & just under 500 lb/ft of Torque @6,100-rpm, 50-years down-the-road...And this from a rebuild that was assembled as close as possible to the OEM spec, including drive-belts & twin-point-dizzy, as measured on Nicks own Dyno...

The only non-genuine features were a 0.30" overbore that had to be done for rusty-bore reasons, that raised displacement to around 432-cubes, & the only OEM-type pistons that could be sourced, raise compression a little from 10:25 to 1, up to 10.6 to 1, around a 3% increase.

This baby sounds so sweet, that I honestly don't think I've ever heard a sweeter engine roar :) !!!

Engine sounds pretty good on the dyno and the numbers are impressive for a near stock offering, especially considering it's still running a points ignition! You hear him say the engine is good for 50,000 miles but we all know them points are going to need attention in less than 10k LOL! it's just a mathematical certainty as that engine will also require tune up intervals of 15k miles anyway.

Love the smell of them old engines too, something about the exhaust smell - perhaps the total lack of emissions or any efforts to that end make them all smell great! Could be that leaded gas too! LOL

It's all money... but money well spent to guys like us! lol

Yo,

I'm glad you liked the post ! I wasn't 100% sure that it was safe to post without possibly offending anyone here, ( since Nick is so close to y'all, & it may be seen as me stepping on toes for bringing his stuff here ) but after watching it a few times ( I downloaded it ), I just had to share that engines roar with everyone LOL :) !!! And the HP & Torque numbers "have" to impress for a naturally-aspirated engine in anyone's language.

I'm really glad the admin liked the roar :) ! Chrysler have always been an unsung hero when compared to the accolades given to GM & Ford imo.

I'd say that dual-point set-up would have you under the bonnet more often than you cared to be, like every-other-week-end adjusting them...But they do allow for strong & accurate coil-time-induction at high RPM's when set right, for a limited time anyhow.

There's also another short video that has Nick selling the motor & power-train, since he couldn't source the body for it that he wanted, & also cited bills & stuff to pay. I was nearly going to post it too, if only for conclusion & some interesting info about the power-train, but the assembly sold real quick, & there's no further start-ups.
