Wrong forum, Toyota stuff. So shoot me

2001, V8, Tundra 4x. Rebuild the trans a year ago I mentioned it. Been good, not 100%.

Going thru the gears, 1,2,3,OD. When it goes into OD a split sec later seems to downshift a hair, doesn't seem like down to 3rd either. I note about 100RPM increase at maybe 40-45 when it does this. Doesn't always do that but has been getting more frequent. I know, check ATF level, I will but don't think that is the key. You guys know better.

Overdrive sensor? Where is it? Had one go on the 2003 F350 once but it was more obvious.

Usually overdrive is achieved by locking up the converter at cruising speeds. Usually there is a button to turn off overdrive however it's controlled by solenoid, usually attached to the valve body. The fact you mention third gear is getting wonky makes me wonder if possibly something is amiss, however I'm not very familar with Toyota tranmissions -- yet being a 2001 it's possible it has a TV (throttle valve) cable... sometimes if this is out of adjustment they can shift funny. Newer cars don't have a cable, and the TV is all digital by wire so they aren't adjustable. Obviously you would want to start with checking that fluid while it's at opperating temperature (best to drive around and get it warm) and on a level surface. Some vehicles suggest the transmission be in neutral, but usually park is fine so long at your on a flat level surface. Engine has to be running when you check it, the first pull you would check and wipe clean, but you'll get the most accurate reading on your second dip. An underful tranmission would slip at some point once it got low enough, and an overfull tranmission can be just as bad because the fluid will foam and no longer have viscosity.

I remember you having one hell of a time with that transmission the last time. Also recall you having some problems with the transmission cooler and lines. If you are low on fluid that means there is probably a leak... if it's overfull that's a bad sign because it's been over-full for quite some time! If you're a little low you can always add a pint of Lucas Transmission conditioner. It's THICK, but sometimes buys you a bit more time on a transmission that is on it's way out.

I'd seriously consider getting a good low mile used unit and keep the other one for parts if you're going to keep this truck forever. Not sure what kind of warranty you got, but most places only do a year -- some less depending.

Let us know how it goes!

It's rebuilt, new lines cooler etc, junkyard transfer case. It's over a year now. It shifts to OD but in a second shifts back to 3rd. Seems OK other than that. I'll do a good level check, warm. Maybe cycle the OD button if I can find it again. Thank you for the info, now I get dirty :)

Yo Shawnee,

I'm a little-bit-late to reply, but check your owners manual that lives in the glove-box for the shift-point-specs...

Sometimes some manufacturers have a little button on the T-bar ( gear selector ) or close-by, that has an option for "economy" or "power"...Economy = low rpm shift-points to get you into top-gear sooner, & "Power" allows the engine to rev around 500-1,000 rpm more in each gear before shifting, depending on load. - The gears hang-on-longer.

Also, the transmission in my old car that had this button, also had a lock-up convertor for hwy speeds of say 60-mph or more, & anything below that speed, meant you felt like a 1/2 down-shift into gear 3.5 was being made once the throttle had movement. I'd suggest that this is the release of the lock-up-solenoid, & the regular 5-10% auto-slippage is felt. This means that it's likely that nothing at all is wrong with your transmission, but check through the specs in the owners manual.

*All std automatic transmissions that have a torque-convertor have 5-10% slippage.

I'd simply run the economy selection, & when necessary, manually downshift for your own peace-of-mind.

So there's my $00:02 LOL !

Not late at all Rastus, haven't really attacked it yet. Oh yeah, the manual! I need it to find the OD switch. Wife says on shifter, nope. I don't feel it is the transmission itself either. It is definetally an obvious shift and shift back. 3 to 4th and a split sec back to 3rd. See it on the tach too.

My 2003 F350 did it, was a simple $65 sensor. It's cold out, wet, I'm outta booze, quit smoking cigs,,, just kinda a lazy, mean shit right now! Thanks, I will look.

Well done Shawnee.

It takes about a week for the urge to light-one-up to pass, & after that, you should be fine.

I was thinking of grabbing a packet to enjoy over Christmas, but down this way they've increased the prices once again, & it's over $50:00 for a packet of 25 Taylor made cigarettes...

The gov't can go & screw itself.

Been near 2 weeks. Still craving but never gave in. Pack 20 in Seattle cost me $25 2 years ago. I roll (rolled) "american spirit" in a good machine, tops tubes. Can was about $60-65, 200 tubes about 3. Only get 160 cigs per can not 200 as expected. But all natural, organic, hell gonna smoke, smoke the good stuff! And I still do but can't buy that in a store, not around me anyway!

Good job on quitting smoking Shawnee! I don't know how you could drink and not smoke though -- the two go together like eggs and bacon!

I have never paid $25 for a pack of 20 cigarettes before but I believe you! In California I think I paid damn near $20 at the airport for a pack! Smoking and drinking is expensive, I try to tell myself that it's better than taking pills and getting hooked on big pharma and the medical pushers -- but still, which is the lesser of two evils remains to be seen. I'm going to be pushing 50 in less than two years! I watch as my Grandparents get into their 90's and suffer with dementia where they don't even remember the person they have been with for 30 years and it's very sobering, yet leaves you feeling like what does it all matter when you get so old you can't do anything for yourself and forget everything and everyone -- even passing thoughts are forgotten as soon as they are said! I want to say it's sad -- but it's really just cruel! Used to be I could say at 25 years old that if I could live to 50 I'd have liven my whole life over again... I guess I could say the same thing once again when I hit 50 but the elders have me seriously questioning that last 10 years when I hit 90! We often forget the first few years of our lives we can't even feed ourselves or wipe our own asses! And that seems to hold true for the last few years as well from what I'm seeing!

I think what is important is we keep hanging on and we NEVER GIVE UP!
