-24 Below Zero and the 16 year old Mercedes Benz starts with ease!

This morning was one of the coldest mornings so far for the winter season here in Michigan with a temp of -4 bellow and a wind chill factor of -24 below!

I was curious how the Mercedes was going to react to such cold temps as I needed to go somewhere. To my suprise when I got in and went to fire her up she turned a little slower than normal then fired right up and ran smooth as silk. I was quite impressed considering all of the No-Starts, dead batteries and flooded out vehicles we have been seeing come thru. Needless to say I was impressed with the Mercedes and its ability to start and run so good dispite the fact that its close to 20 years old now. What I like even more is how the heated washer solvent bottle melts away the ice. For people wondering how that works, basiclly they just port the coolant thru coils that sits inside the washer solvent bottle. Pretty simple but boy does it make a diffrence when you have ice on the windshield.

Anyone else have any stories to share about thier Mercedes on the cold mornings?

Well here it is almost two years later and she still fires over on even the coldest of mornings. I think it was -27 one late night this month and I was shocked how smooth she ran dispite the super cold temps. Sure it was guzzling premium gas like a drunken sailor but hey, whats the point of having a cold fire injector if your never going to use it.

I must admit that the W126 Mercedes is one of the best rear wheel drive vehicles I have yet to drive in deep snow. Many times I thought there was no way, yet somehow the Benz would just hunker down and pull herself out.

Anyone got any winter tales in the W126?

It has been tradition to bring home a fresh cut christmas tree every year in the Mercedes. This year the wife really out-did herself. Thank goodness they bailed it or she would have had a cold ride home! LOL

Yo SELLC,

My Dad would tell you ( & I'll back him up ) that after 40+ years of ownership, every MB that he's owned has always started first crank, and in that time, appart from the odd battery replacement, only one fuel pump failure has ever let us down...And that would have been in 1986 on the '76 280SLC that is still running perfectly to this day, even with 340,000 K's on the odometer...The weather has never bothered any of them. I can't even remember the amount of MB's that's lived in the garage there's been so many, but the SLC has been the long-termer !

Cheers,

Rastus

A new record has been set!

This morning was -11 F with a wind chill factor of -30!

With a very important morning meeting I was curious if the 24 year old beast was going to start.

As you can see, she wasnt very happy about it, but she didn't let me down!

Eh.. It's -11 degrees on a cold start idiot!

Within seconds it goes all the way left as it should.

Totally normal behavior for a -11 degree cold start you rookie!

That's a lucky break ! Good-on-you for checking the fuses first before you started to remove the fan-motor !

I had my spare blower motor and regulator all ready to go! Lol, it was almost a let down when I just had to replace the fuse.

The crazy part is when it got down to -11 F (-30 wind chill), the buttons for the fan speed actually froze! So I think that is what caused the fuse to pop. It was an aftermarket fuse, one of many I pull from donor vehicles. I made sure to use a factory fuse this time. Them aluminum ones are crap, I don't care for the copper ones much either. The original fuses had lead elements I think. They seem to last much longer.

Hey SELLC,

It's gotta be good having a back-up of all those spare parts ! All the BS you have to go through to get some bits-&-pieces, & then have to order & wait for. I'd say you save quite a few bucks a year on parts knowing you have all that back-up. You don't know of any cheap 107's going for parts do you ?

Cheers,

Rastus

I see R107 SL's all the time for sale.. Buy a few good priced ones in distress. It is work, but the savings and possible parts sales make it worth it.

Stoma might be driving a Mercedes but as I said above, "it's work". As such he drives an Escort that barely works just like him.

I hate to say it, but if Steves the guy on the left, there is a resemblance, at least in that shot.
