Gee PowerStroker, maybe you should have read more than just my most recent post.

I had already stated that one of the leads will pulse while the engine is running/cranking. I felt it was worthy of mention given the fact he was trying to test the coil.

Had your smart ass read 9 post prior you would have seen this-

"Well you could check for KEY ON POWER at the positive of the coil. Using a test light or volt meter to see that there is 12 Volts when the key is on.

While I have never tried this on an 83 380 MB, you could check the ground connector at the coil to see if its opening and closing. I guess you could do this by putting a test light lead on the positive side of the battery and then probing the negative while someone cranks it. The light should go on and off as the engine turns (Again this is not something I have personally tried on your model). If however the light does turn on and off its safe to say the ignition control module and distributor are doing their job."

However given the fact the guy was somewhat NEW to testing the coil, I figured he should know that with the "Key On" there would be postive voltage at both leads, and that the years I work with do not have a positive or negative symbol by the terminals. His older style coil MAY have a +/- symbol by the terminals, and if they did both could be energized with just the key on.

Good evening,

After taking some much needed time away, I finally got back to the car.  I was able to find a new ICM for $47.48 each ($58.62 with shipping) from AutohausAZ.  Had to really look because the prices vary.  It also has a one year warranty. smile

The part number is: 002 545 26 32 by Huco from Germany.   Bought two for just in case.  That ICM was indeed the original.  I saved the old ICM because I may be able to get it repaired.  Upon opening the cover, there are two circuits (diode/capacitors) burnt.

The coil was weak so I replaced it with a new one as well.  I also checked everything else on the car.  Problem solved.  Again, this was a good thread and I hope that it helps someone else who may have a similar problem.

Glad you got it sorted, you sound much happeir when your Benz is running! Most happy I could help!

You got a super deal on the module! I'd have purchased two at that price as well. You can't go wrong by having some spares in the trunk for them long road trips just in case. I'd hang on to your old coil as well just incase you need a backup also.

Sometimes taking a step back allows you to re-group and go at it even harder! I am sure this thread will help anyone needing info about their early W126.

Hello oneklassy1.  was your issue ever resolved? i have the same proble.  did replacing the ICM fix it?
