Yeah while I agree with you on many of the things you say, and I have seen some mechanics that were more toolbox than anything, Im still going to go with fixing anything that is broken. If we all lived by your rule, this world would really be in a fine mess.
If something is broke, you fix it. Not knowing how to fix something is a whole lot diffrent than not being able to fix something. The real mechanic should be able to fix ANYTHING on a vehicle. Certifications such as State and National ASE test on automotive theroy, not vehicle specific models, therefore one with a solid grasp for the theory of automobile related repairs should be able to fix ANYTHING. Information is also a big help, thats why this forum is here.

I have NEVER had to turn a car over to the dealership. I have NEVER sent anyone to the dealership, and I think its shows how arrogant the dealership is in trying to say they fix cars better than others.
It aint the tools or the dealership that makes the tech. You remember that.
You have the required tools to program keys and have the necessary security access functions that allow doing PATS functions and DPF resets?
I know my dealer has them....
