Ford F250 and F350 Super Duty Cab and Engine Removal

Well what started off as me just replacing a few injectors has turned out to be a complete removal and replacement of the 6.0 Turbo Diesel engine.

My original thoughts were to do this job in my garage, so lifting the cab up much higher was not an option due to ceiling limitations. I figured I would just remove the front clip and core support, then remove the bed and slide the cab back, however only the top portion of the core support is removable, so you would not be able to just "Slide Back" the cab without lifing the lower portion of the core support over the engine.

This being the case I have decided to pull the engine out the front and leave the damn cab and bed on.

Here is a look behind the front clip of a Ford Super Duty truck.

I have the turbo off and pretty much everything off the intake.

Even still I am not sure I am going to have the clearance to snake the oil pan over the cross-member! WTF is that shit!?

Oh well, here we go!

I'm not really sure why you would remove the fenders for this part... I guess good techs just take more stuff off the truck?

If you use the Ford lifting jig (attached to the front of the motor), removing the turbo should be enough for the clearance... It really doesn't take much to remove the lower pan and oil pump pick up... and it makes life a bit easier.

As shop foreman, I am a useless do nothing (there's a freebie for ya, Rex). However, our other two main diesel techs are split. One perfers to do heads over the fenders as long as he isn't doing studs... the other prefers to remove the cab whenever he is doing heads.

Doing the job in your "garage"? Like at home, or what?

My initial plans were to pull the bed, then slide the cab back. As it turns out that will not be possible unless I was willing to drill out the spot welds holding the lower portion of the core. Since there is no way in hell I am doing that, pulling the fenders has made leaning over the truck a little less stress, plus there was a boat load of mud back there starting to cause a little rust.

I figured I may have to pull the oil pan to get the clearance, however I did have to replace an oil pan on a 7.3 in the past, on a cube truck of all things. Not a fun job is what I am saying.

Doing heads with the cab still on, and engine in place would be a real pain in the ass, back, legs and knees. No getting away from that, I have been there. Since this is not customer pay its being done in the garage, at home. I could have pulled the cab at daddy's garage, but I wasnt interested in keeping the diesel engine.

Using your superior manuals to their fullest advantage, I see....

There are two ways to handle being a putz.... one is to try and hide the fact...

The better choice would be to admit that you are acting like a putz and top stop doing it...

"Pulled the cab at daddys garage"..... What about your shop???? Or are we about to have an epiphany?

I think you need to re-read the first post. I clearly stated that I was doing the job in my Garage.

I have already stated that I no longer rent a store front, and that I have moved my opperations when I moved into my new house early THIS year. My garage here is bigger than the one I rented for $1200+ a month. The only thing is my ceiling in my garage is not tall enough to lift the cab up, so I was thinking about sliding it back.

Makes no real diffrence anyway. I know what I am doing, just feel lucky I let you read about it.

Holy Balls, are you telling us that the Auto Trend World Corporate Headquarters has relocated to your garage without a hoist???

Damn

Has anyone told you there is a recession going on?

If I need a hoist, I have two that I can use whenever I want.

Most of what I do such as engine overhauls, engine swaps, coversions, and my Mercedes fetish do not require a hoist, however I am thinking about getting one in the garage "Just in case". I just hate to loose the bay considering the versatility I have.

Next month I am going to have 4 LT1 builds going on side by side. 3 of them are sold, one is my x-mas money. I dont have time to plug tires, change oil and rotate tires. Leave that for the rookie, as I did them things when I was 16-18 years old.

I dont plan on using a diesel engine because of the amount of down time I have seen over the past few years. Yes I could fix anything this truck throws at me, but thats not what I want to be spending my spare time and money doing.

I will have a better perspective of the 6.0 inside and out once this is done. As much as I dont care for the high cost, and down time I think the PowerStroke 6.0 is a well built motor.

Really what bothers me MOST about the Ford PowerStroke Diesel engines found in Super Duty trucks is the lack of access to the motor. As a mechanic I would fix my own vehicle on the side of the road if I were out of town. With this truck you are just screwed. Yeah its nice, but why more people are not bitching about the poor access proves that Ford's designed it that way to ensure people stayed out. Fords could have easily made access to this engine, and repairs MUCH MUCH easier. I can understand low hood line sports cars having engines that sit half way under the windshield, but for Fords to carry this practice over to its SUPER DUTY "WORK" trucks is just silly. I would never buy another "Work" truck that did not allow me full access to the engine, thus my considering the 351.

Could still go many ways.

I know that there is a recession "going on". I also thought that you ran a viable business -  not some "hobby" thing.

We now see that Rex isn't a "store" ...... Rex is a back alley guy.. WOW! I'm impressed....

I was never a "big" business... But, in my prime, I had 8 employees.

Rex... I used to think you were a POS....

Now I see you as an inadequate POS....

I'm gone....

In your prime?

If you could not make it work with 8 guys there is a reason your not in business anymore. That reason is because you SUCK at fixing vehicles, and you are a poor business man.

What position do you hold at your dealership? Also I will have you know I am licensed and certified, just like the store front down the road. You should also know that I moved from my store front because I wanted to! My lease was up, and I could have re-signed, hell they were offering me a unit 3 times bigger than the one that I had.

Too bad you couldnt hack it Pogo, unlike you I made the choice to move my operations so I could be with my family while the kids are young. I can do that because I am good at what I do.

Here is something else that may bother you... After moving I have never been so busy!

So go on and leave, no one forced you to be here. Mater of a fact, I dont remember anyone inviting you.

Now I see youre a bitter, jealous POS who couldnt even fix an election if your brother was the governor!

Loser.

The one thing you are right about is my status as a poor businessman.. Something I could never do is take possesion of a customers vehicle... I would never make a decision where I wasn't sure of my information.

You have such an overblown opinion of yourself... If you choose to think that I am inadequate.... more  power to you... Once more from the top.. I don't care what you think of me. You are inconsequentional... You are working in your daddies garage... WOW!!

Loser?

A long time ago, I realized that working for an independant wasn't the best choice in the world... I went to work for a dealer.... the training... the documentation... What can I say?

I can say that Rex is short sighted... I can say that Rex has proven this to be true...
I can say that Rex's opinion means squat to me.... We are in a recession and I have a job... he is working in his daddies garage...

WOW!!!!

Life is a business. To say you are a poor business man would also imply you are not good at life in general. I know you could care less what I think. You are bull headish, and grouchy. You often refer to "Days in your prime" but the last time I checked you werent dead.

I find is hilarious you think I am short sighted. You make this judgment based on what I choose to tell you here on this forum. You lack the inside information, aka "Big Picture" that I often times keep to myself, because part of being a good business man is under promising and over delivering.

It would be highly contradicting for me to say your thoughts or options dont matter to me, it's one of them "Business" things you wouldnt know anything about. The mere fact were exchanging ideas on a web forum suggest you seek my opinion.

I may have to go this winter season without my truck, not because I HAD to, but because I have made a business decision. I am okay with that, because I am not short sighted, and I realize the deprecation on these 6.0 International/Navistar/Ford concoctions have no where else to go but down. I am not one of them people whom have to have it NOW. I can wait and play the game, so long as I come out on top in the end.

I think you are angry because you know I am right about the cost and reliability issues of the F250 in question. Need more proof? Look in your driveway.

Life isn't a business... from the moment you are born, you must perform only one last task... everything else is optional...

I can say that I am a poor businessman because my heart isn't cold enough to be a good one..

You haver taken pains to tell us that you possess great skills and knowledge.... that you have a solid customer base filled with loyal clients... that you have manuals that are second to none... and here you are - working in your daddies garage, removing the front fenders from your truck only to find that (once again) you have wasted a lot of effort for no reason or possible gain.... I can visualize the RO that you would present a customer... "R&I front fenders for no reason - " complete with a charge for time and shop supplies...

You over-estimate me, in one respect, though... I am not angry over some assumption of yours.... And, though it might seem amazing to someone like yourself, there are thousands of reliable 6.0s on the road... but they belong to people that can operate the engine in the manner it requires for maximum reliability.

I look in my driveway and I see nothing that will equate for proof of anything for Rex... There is a gasoline powered truck in my driveway.... and the reason it is gasoline powered is because there are only three weeks in a year where I could justify owning a diesel. These would be the three weeks in which I would tow my holiday trailer. For the rest of the year, my short trips and cold starts would make for some extreme  wet stacking in a diesel - only I'm smart enough to see it.

Two last points... every one of us knows that you will, in your typical fashion, offer alternate interpretations for some statements that are painfully clear....

As for seeking your opinion? Fuck... hasn't it occured to you that we are only looking to see what sort of idiocy you are capable of next?

Muck fe... the great SellC empire working in his daddies shed... What next?

Lets get one thing straight on them fenders.... I removed them thinking I was going to slide the cab back after removing the bed. It didnt take long at all, and I also pulled the hood for better lighting.

Right now I am fighting with the turbo hoping to gawd my cherry picker will not only hold the weight of the engine, but will allow for enough clearance to lift the pan up over the cross member. If I end up having to jack up the cab, it will not have been a waste of time to remove the fenders. Given the amount of hidden mud behind the fenders, I am glad that I did.

Lets also clear up this BS you keep claiming about me working at daddies shop. It is true that when he gets too busy I will help him out. He's getting old, plus he helps me when I need it.

I still run my own show, only now I dont have to worry about the overhead. Dont you agree that overhead is the major reason a business has to charge more? I am trying to help myself and my customers. As you can imagine, taking a 12K hit along with all the time and space that vehicle took up really set me back. Things are starting to turn around, and while my garage at the house is not a store front, its not much diffrent than my last two rented units, where I had neighbors on either side of me. The last place I was at had a software company move in on my left side, and a fitness class on my right side! They just loved the smell when I cracked open a differential for two days, they also loved when I used my air hammer and impact guns. So really I aint missing much, as I am still registered and certified with the state.

I am glad to know you guys feast on my bad luck. It just proves you know where I am coming from, as anyone that wasnt a mechanic would have lost their lunch a year ago.

What did you need a differential open for two days for?

Waiting for parts. As usual I was totaly booked and could not take in the job. Maybe my esitmate was too high, maybe he felt bad asking me for help, I just dont know but the Neighbor guy next door decided to do his rear brakes himself on a cube truck. He hired a rookie mechanic that likley was getting paid peanuts and he installed new rear hub bearings and didnt think they needed to be packed because they would be lubed up by the differential. I felt really bad because I told him if he needed help to let me know, instead he paid some rookie mechanic to do the job and ended up having to source a whole new rear end.

Funny part was that he did it in his unit next door, back when I first moved into the Lilly road location my neighbor was a pool supply company and I had no neigbor to the right. When he first cracked the differential open someone thought the smell was a fire, when the fire department got there, guess who's door they were knocking on? So naturally a complaint was made to the land lord, and everyone thought it was me, even though it was not parked in my unit. Smell axle fluid? Blame the mechanic. Guess thats how it goes. I myself would have put the cover back on with two bolts, but were not talking about pro's here.

It stunk up the whole building for a week! The owner of the cube van was so pissed he stiffed the rookie mechainc out of his pay, and rightfully so because now he had to buy a whole differential because the bearing had welded itself onto the spindle. It was a big ordeal because someone didnt know what the hell they were doing, feelings got hurt, but not mine, as I did offer to help him out, but I was just too busy that day. Irony is that in the end it would have been much less expensive, and much less time had I done it.

It cost him even more later down the line when the rookie mechanic that didnt know how to do brakes got his revenge. I used to park bad ass Mustangs, Mercedes, and Camaros out in the back lot. Vehicles with 20" dubs and shit too, but somehow my pool guys peice of shit van got the windows busted out and his tires stolen shortly after... Wonder who that might have been? Mind you there was three Mercedes, and a Mustang GT of ours parked in the same row!

Oh the good old days...
