OH-WHAT-A-FEELING! Stuck throttle on the Toyota!


Well for anyone who does not know what I am talking about, you must have been under a rock for too long.

Apparently Toyota has had problems with accelorators sticking on their vehicles, reports claim as far back as 2002 even.

While at first Toyota tried to claim it was sticking floor mats, the situation has become more serious. Serious enough to halt production of many of their vehicle lines.

While I myself dont care for the likes of Toyota, Honda, Kia many people used to purchase these vehicles and arrogantly claim they had the most reliable vehicles. Often times they would use that reliability claim to rebut folks whom may have otherwise given them grief for buying a foreign vehicle while living in America.

I got news for all them folks.... "What have you got to say now"?

I am not sure how they will fix the problem. Perhaps if Toyota paid me VERY well I could check out their vehicles and tell them whats wrong. I myself feel the cheap little bastards just skimped out on the windings for the throttle return spring, but what do I know, I am only a mechanic. Perhaps the IAC valve sticks causing it to rev up, perhaps a major plastic vacuum tee breaks causing an increase in throttle, perhaps the butterfiles inside the throttle body arent up to snuff and fold/break, perhaps floor mats cause the problem, perhaps condensation gets into a poorly made cable and eventually corrodes causing the cable to stick inside the insulation... Perhaps... Perhaps... Perhaps...

Guess it could be a combination of everything mentioned above because after all you idiot.... YOU PURCHASED A TOYOTA! I am just glad that I dont fix on Toyota's. I mean I could, but if you check out this forum, I think its plain to see were not overly moved by the Asian line of automobiles. I mean they likley make a better car than Russia, but they are definatly down there in my eyes. This isnt because of their throttle's sticking, this is how I have felt since way back when I got fired from Honda for a customer not returning from a test drive. Maybe its because I never liked doing brake rotors on the 90's Honda Accords. Maybe its because thier cars are ugly, maybe because their vehicles are conservative in ways that even conservatives cant stand.

Who knows... But I sure am glad that I have never had to touch one as I am sure this whole problem originally got pushed to the mechanics whom may have previously serviced the vehicle. For once I feel like avoiding the Asian markets may have been a wise move rather than a loss of revenue.

Japan was doing pretty good there for awhile. From an American perspective back in the 70's and 80's Japan was usually reffered to as crap. In the 90's and 2000's companies like Sony and Toyota turned Japan around to be considered Top Shelf of the Asian markets.

Every since Toyota tried to knock off The Wizard of Oz to market their vehicles it seems it has jinxed them, leaving top dog's at Toyota clicking their heels together at work saying "There's no place like home" as if they might be able to just wake up from a bad dream.

If anyone that reads this ever finds themselves in a situation where the vehicles throttle has become stuck the important part is not to panic.

Simply place the gear selector in Netural and let the engine blow. After putting it in neutral you could try to turn off the key, but be sure you have come to a complete stop before, just in case you lock the steering wheel.

Most of these vehicles should have a rev limiter, so the engine might not blow up. It's possible it could just bounce off the rev limiter until such time as you are in control enough to turn off the ignition. If the engine does blow, its better than loosing your life, plus I am most sure you could go after Toyota for any damages to the vehicle that resulted from their sticking throttle.

This kind of thing should not have happend, and I would hope that 911 opperators will be instructed to inform people to do as I said above should they call in, rather than ask questions.

Apparently the effected Toyota models that are having problems with the accelorator pedal arent using traditional cables. There seems to be more of an electronic problem than what I mentioned above.

Seems to me that the gas pedal may not be the problem. I find it funny they wish to claim it was the pedal made in the USA rather than the Denso. Regardless I have yet to see anything to confirm that the pedal is the problem. For all Toyota knows it could be the engine control module! At first they were trying to say it was just the floor mats! 

I dont think they know what the hell the problem is!

It's been a busy week for US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who has Toyota in his crosshairs.

He first told Congress that people should stop driving cars involved in Toyota's ongoing recall.

That panicked Toyota investors, which drove down the stock price.

LaHood's exact quote: "My advice is, if anybody owns one of these vehicles, stop driving it, take it to the Toyota dealer because they believe they have the fix for it."

But LaHood later danced away from that comment, saying he had meant to say that his advice to people driving the vehicles would be "if you are in doubt, take it to the dealership today."

But given the government's large stake in General Motors and Chrysler, some suggest the US is "bullying" Toyota.

(T)his is what happens when a government owns a company - the two companies that are going to gain the most out of this are General Motors and Chrysler," said Peter Morici, a professor at the University of Maryland's business school.

"But their behavior is consistent with the general policy of the US government, whether it's dealing with coffeemakers or cars."

And the UAW, the government's partner in GM and Chrysler, would also love to see Toyota weakened; it has long tried to unionize Toyota's US plants.

The Kansas City Star suggests the government should back off.

To have the U.S. transportation secretary appear to pile on makes it clear that government officials should be a lot more careful with their statements in the future about the U.S. auto industry.

By why expect the government to back off? This is one more thing that happens when the regulators own companies in the industry that they regulate.

I say the government should get the hell out of the business end of things and focus on government. But thats just me.

More and more I am seeing this advertisement from Toyota about their electronics being "Fail-Safe" LOL What a total effing joke!

If Toyota's electronics were so fail safe, then why are they being fined some $16 million dollars for trying to cover up the fact they are not?

I have attached a photo of the advertisement that Toyota seems to be pushing on a lot of web forums banner ads. I think it's a sick joke and I hope Toyota sales drop like a brick in water.

The nerve of these bastards! Not only do they make shitty cars, they lie!

If you have about used up your "sensational reporting" quota, look under the hood of your super duty and let us know how long the accelerator cable is.

In 2004, Ford went to "drive by wire" on the 5.4 pick ups... I'm sure they did that earlier with the cars but our area has a very high per capita of trucks.

Some of the Europeans, I understand, have featured "drive by wire" for  several years before that (Audi for one  - and didn't they have claims of "unintended acceleration"? - and didn't they survive?".

Now.... I'm not sure about Toyota (but I can't see them being any different) - Ford uses redundant APP sensors (this is the throttle pedal sensor) . Depending on application, this would be two or three sensors in a common housing (there may or may not be an "idle validation" feature included). If the sensors lose coherency (i.e. do not agree with each other) the system should default to some sort of limp mode. The throttle will either refuse to respond or throttle respose will be otherwise limited.

Does Toyota have a problem? Definitely. But there is much to be said for public perception.

In the early 90s, there were many Tercels built in the early 80s that had the rear lower suspension control arms rust out. I had a customer with this problem and eventually discovered (before the repair, thankfully) that, while no formal recall had been issued, Toyota was replacing rusted out control arms for free.

With our increasing dependancy on automotive electronics, I am sure that we will be treated to many new instances of "I dint think that wuz gonna happen".

Rex... this year Ford is (aside from the 6.7 diesel and the 6.2 gas engines.... ) introducing three new 4 cylinder gas engines. After skimming over the press releases (reading in detail for content is still required) I see three DOHC  motors.... direct fuel injection.... and (here's the kicker) both camshafts have variable timing independant of each other.

Some of this technology is lost on some of you youngsters. Me? Doesn't seem like it was all that long ago I was using a growler and polarizing generators.

I really would like to hear your stories about growlers and polarizing generators sometime Pogo, but to say things like "variable cam timing" is used properly for ANY CAMSHAFT DRIVEN engine is a lot like saying a 1989 Ford F150 has adjustable caster from the factory... Because really by definition there is NOTHING on the cam that is being adjusted, and while engines with two camshafts may have separate position sensors (or distributors for you old timers) they really dont do much in terms of actual CAM TIMING. Now until the day they introduce independent solenoids that control the opening and closing of the valves they really CAN NOT say it has adjustable cam timing. Sure the sensors can be retarded or advanced to change the spark timing; however the actual VALVE duration, timing and lift will always remain the same.

See much like I have mentioned about Toyota being full of shit, so are many others who would like to use big words out of context in an effort to appear "Cutting edge". Really it all boils down to BUYER BEWARE.

And yes... I am well aware of the super duty having an electronic gas pedal. You ever noticed the Delphi throttle body? This is all off topic since Ford's run-away throttle woes never turned into another Firestone Wilderness AT, however whats important is the fact that Ford's didnt try covering it up. And how many Ford Trucks or Cars do you see rolling off the line with Firestone tires now days? Not many? Now days they push Bridgestone, which is basically a re-badged Firestone. Same thing there too, they advertise safe tires even though some people dont know how to check their own oil, let alone check tire pressures.

The main point here is Toyota is trying to bullshit the public now. They are trying to stonewall the problems. While it's not a big deal to you or I, it would be if one of our families had been hurt in an accident as a result of Toyota's electrical problems... Then again most of my family wouldnt be caught dead in a foreign car, which sometimes is an issue because my vehicle was made in Germany.

See what you fail to realize Pogo is that newer Toyota vehicles have WAY too much electronics to trust. Watch this video and you will be better informed at just how out of hand it has gotten

With a little more knowledge, you wouldn't be so amazed all the time... My first encounter with smart key technology was in a friends Corvette - a 2006. Leave the key in your pocket and climb into the car... push the button... hear the motor go vroom-vroom. I do not think that this was the first year for smart key in the 'Vette.

Ford currently has a couple of models with push button start.... I don't work on enough cars to rattle them off - sorry. I will, however, opine that they are likely models that offer active park assist... The vehicle must also have EPAS (electronic power assisted steering). IIRC, all Ford vehicle have, at the very least, OTIS. One touch integrated start cranks the engine until it starts OR the engine has cranked for 10 seconds OR the key is turned to the off position (makes some folks think the starter is hanging in gear).


It's not just Toyota that is heavy into electronics... Every manufacturer is.

I never said Toyota was the only company heavy into electronics. What I was trying to say was that Toyota is the only one with such problems that cost them $16 million in fines for covering it up and now they are trying to act like people should trust them.

What is truly amazing is the vast number of people that proclaimed "why can't the Detroit three churn out perfect cars like Toyota"? All the while (and in spite of evidence to the contrary) firmly believeing that Toyota was setting the standard for the auto industry.

Now that Toyota has been proven to be "just another car maker". With any of these technological marvels there is the possibility for "shit happens". You've seen that.

With any of these technological marvels, there is the possibility that (like HEUI injectors) a sequence of events happens that can defy logic or ready explanation.

The Toyota commercials I see on the tube have Toyota begging people to trust them....

I've driven Fords for many, many years... This is the devil I DO know.... He is probably much better than the devil I DON'T know.

It's just an advertisement Pogo. I cant say that I would want to be in a Mercedes in the middle of an all out blizard but I have had good luck in fairly deep snow with my Mercedes.

I dont think the wife should be concerned... At least "Not in this weather"... LOL

I live in northern Alberta... this is a land of great distances and harsh weather... You can take your Mercedes and park it "in the shade" (if you get my drift). My Ford SuperCrew (purchased at a much lower price than your MB) is what I will send my loving bride out onto winter roads in.

You may not understand some of the concerns that living with Crohns disease may offer... you wont understand that there are times that you must drive when it isn't the best choice... There are far too many times that I cannot accompany my wife in poor driving conditions...

I need the assurance that the vehicle I send her in can "make the trip"... I refuse to depend on "good luck". And, I am sure, neither would you.

I don't send my loved ones to drive a Toyota. Nor would I send them out in a Mercedes if the weather conditions were similar to yours. The same holds true for a big F250 Crew with the 6.0 diesel engine. Sure once its started they should be okay, providing the turbo Up-Tube isnt leaking carbon monoxide from the many useless flex joints that werent needed, but what about when it's time to go home and the PowerStroke had sat in the parking lot for two hours in Zero degree windy weather? Do you think there is a GOOD chance that it could fail to start? I am not willing to take that chance, therefore its curtains for International/Navistars Diesel engines, and Ford's can kiss my ass for trying to cram them into their trucks.
