I wonder if we would have as much debt if the Republicans hadn't filibustered every attempt Obama made to move away from the Bush policies that turned Clinton's surplus into a doubling of our national debt? From what I understand, the lions share of the increased debt had to do with only a few things:
~ Medicare part D drug benefit that wasn't paid for - Bush ~ Health Care reform which has an initial outlay of cash but eventually reduces costs for the government (investment in the future) - Obama ~2 wars which were not paid for - Bush ~ Massive tax cut (especially for the wealthy) which wasn't paid for - Bush. ~ Massive bailout of failing banks which wasn't paid for - Bush ~ Stimulus package which wasn't paid for(of which nearly half was tax cuts in order to get enough Republican votes to pass) - Obama
So yes, while some of this was Obama's doing, It is not fair to imply that the debt situation we are in is entirely his fault, because if you were to add up some numbers and attribute the policies that caused this mess to the proper president who signed them in to law, you might not be very happy with your Republican friends. And if you take a look back at the things your hero Reagan did in this regard, you'll be downright pissed.
5 Trillion dollars ago eh? When you add up what the cost of the 2 wars, including Veterans benefits and the medical care many of them will need for the rest of their lives through the Veterans Affairs hospitals, you'll get to that dollar amount just with the wars. I hope your blood lust for Saddam Hussein, who had nothing to do with 911 was worth it. Frankly I'd have killed him for a lot less, but then Halliburton wouldn't have gotten billions of dollars in no bid contracts.

I know for a fact that things have not been getting better, in fact they have been getting worse! More and more I see companies trimming to make up for the slowing. Even government agencies are starting to curb their hours and days open in an effort to meet budget.
When Obama ran for President in 2007/2008 they had people saying "Not in this economy" and the sky was falling! Today in 2012 there is not much sky left to fall, but they dare not make mention of the fact that things are worse today then they were back in 2007.
It makes me sick! And as you pointed out we are in even MORE debt now than ever with nothing to show for it. What REALLY scares me is the stock market, because the dow is @ 13K which I feel is being artificially kept up by a thing called quantitative easing (aka tax payer money). When the bottom falls out I sure hope people with everything in the market get it out in time. Come the end of 2012 we have tax breaks for rich and poor expiring, we have a mandatory 1.2 Trillion cut in government spending that was a mandate to keep the government from defaulting on their debt the last time around! Add the fact it's also an election year, where the current administration is in campaign mode rather than doing anything to head off these problems and what you have is a SERIOUS problem waiting to happen! Only this time Obama wont be able to BS his way out of it, and people aren't going to be able to turn a blind eye to it like they are now.

The Veterans would have gotten benefits regardless if they were involved in a war! To not send our military to war would be a total WASTE! What would be the point?
