How do you raise and lower the rear sunscreen / shade in Mercedes Benz 420 / 560 SEL?


I've never had a sunscreen in any of my W126 Mercedes before, but it appears this recent acquisition (1990 420 SEL) has one. At first I thought it was just something someone put in there, but after closer examination it appears this unit is from the factory because of how it's integrated into the package tray.

So my question to the brain trust is this, how the heck do you operate it!? The wife says it drives her nuts in the morning when backing out of the driveway.

Still haven't figured out how to raise and lower the sunshade, however I did take some photos.

I'm sure I'll figure it out, and once I do I'll report back.

Hi SELLC,

I think that once you release the upper portion that's hooked-on near the rear the rear reading lamp, it's all meant to auto-retract into the parcel-shelf cavity ? Maybe your springs have lost their tension, being 25-odd years old now...

I do remember seeing those when I was an apprentice, but never had to touch or repair one. In fact, I didn't have to ever fit one either LOL !

I don't know Rastus, I tried like hell to pull it down but I don't think it's that easy!

I think the damn thing is power!? But I can't find a switch to operate it either, but there seems to be a track system that runs down the center of it.  I really haven't even touched the car since I bought it due to the holiday onslaught of people needing their cars fixed before Thanksgiving. 

Reports from everyone else that gets to drive it are saying they want the heater fixed! LOL, from my brief 5 minute examination of the heater system with the car fully warmed up it's clear the blend air door is not actuating and thus just cold air. So...... Yeah...

But business has been great! And isn't that all that matters?

Come to find out, the reason all along for the heater not working was because they left the temperature wheel in the blue (cold), and their morning commute to school takes less time than it takes to even warm up the engine!

Rolled the degree wheel to red, let the car run for 10 minutes and low and behold there is great heat! LOL, I must admit that when I tested it the other day fully warm I myself didn't even pay attention to the degree wheel. Just stuck my hand in there and it was ice cold! At least I know the AC works too!

Still can't figure out how to operate that damn power sunshade yet however.

Good find !!!

The little re-circulating lever that operates the quantity of out-side-air mixing is a pain-in-the-ass to fix, as there's often a broken piece of plastic missing, & it's difficult to get to....

Y'all should be a lot warmer now LOL.

I think the car could use a mono-valve. At regular cruise speeds the heat falls off a bit. Classic mono valve. 

Still no-one here knows how to operate the power rear sunscreen? lol!?

Well apparently the location of the switch to operate the rear power sunscreen, on my car at least, was under the ash tray all this time! LOL

I guess I was too busy smoking to notice, but by the time I emptied the ash tray and pushed it in for the first time, there it was... Dead in the center, which I wasn't expecting and my have been why I didn't notice it at first. I am used to two heated seat buttons on either side and a horn button in the center.. So not seeing any on the sides is probably why it escaped my quick visual glance with the ash tray extended.

Anyway, come to find out that my sunscreen does not retract, or should I say roll up anymore... The rod moves up and down, but it just does not suck the shade back in the hopper. I am guessing a spring of some sort got messed up in the roll-up mech.

And anyone looking to manually lower these screens best not take Rastus' advice of pulling on it, because that will break it.

This is how it looks when it lowers without it rolling back into the hopper.

I'll have to look into the fix for the self retracting portion.
