SpaceX just sent a robot equipped with AI to the International Space Station

The robot takeover of the space station has begun. On Friday, SpaceX launched a rocket carrying a robot powered with artificial intelligence, to help astronauts on the International Space Station.

What are the details?

The Crew Interactive Mobile Companion (CIMON) is basically a ball with a face on it, built by Airbus and powered by IBMs artificial intelligence Watson.

Since the space station only has microgravity, this robot doesnt need wheels or legs to move around. Instead, it will use a series of fans to move as it floats around, and it has ultrasonic sensors to help it navigate.

The robot will be able to help the crew perform experiments, and can even reportedly engage in small talk. A promotional video from Airbus shows CIMON talking and laughing with the crew as they eat.

CIMONs version of Watson was also modified from the Earth version, to include astronaut lingo like saying affirmative instead of yes. It can also learn from interacting with and analyzing its environment, so no red flags there.

CIMON will also work as a mobile video camera, allowing NASA to record angles that wouldnt be possible with mounted cameras. Data will be streamed to the IBM cloud (kept separate from the main version of Watson for security purposes), but astronauts will have a button they can push that will put CIMON in privacy mode and stop data from leaving the station.

CIMON left earth aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 5:42 a.m. ET Friday.

Is it friendly?

Allegedly. Only time can tell.

Airbuss lead engineer, Philipp Schulien, insised that this robot would not be taking the place of a human astronaut.

We never plan to replace the crew member with the artificial intelligence, Schulien told The Washington Post. We are just there to support the crew. In the end, the human crew will always be required. The AI is not self-training.

Scary I think...

I'll bet that astronauts haven't named him "David"....

 LOL !!!

Too true, & that was my first thought too. But for some reason I figured more folks would remember / click with "Covenant" than "2001"...

SpaceX launches AI robot, strong coffee for astronauts

A SpaceX rocket that flew just two months ago with a NASA satellite roared back into action Friday, launching the first orbiting robot with artificial intelligence and other station supplies.

The used Falcon rocket blasted off before dawn, hauling nearly 6,000 pounds (2,700 kilograms) of cargo including the spherical AI bot named Cimon, genetically identical mice and super-caffeinated coffee for the crew of the International Space Station.

The shipment packed into a Dragon capsule thats also recycled should reach the station Monday.

It was an especially gorgeous launch, delighting spectators as the rocket plume expanded in the clear night sky like a giant halo beneath a nearly full moon and a gleaming Mars.

SpaceXs Jessica Jensen described the high-altitude plume, illuminated against the dark sky, as the space jellyfish thats coming down after us.

I was going to say breathtaking, but maybe awakening might be a better word, said NASAs space station program manager, Kirk Shireman.

This marked SpaceXs fastest reflight of a booster. The same first-stage booster launched the planet-hunting Tess satellite in April. The capsule, meanwhile, flew in 2016.

Aiming to lower launch costs by reusing rockets, SpaceX did not retrieve the booster for another flight and ditched it in the Atlantic instead. The company is switching to a new and improved line of boosters.

The space station and its six inhabitants were sailing 250 miles above the South Pacific when the Falcon 9 took off.

The Dragon will deliver the robot Cimon, pronounced Simon. Slightly bigger than a basketball, the round, 3D-printed German Space Agency robot will assist German astronaut Alexander Gerst with science experiments. IBM provided the AI brain. Cimon will remain indefinitely on the orbiting lab.

Cimon stands for Crew Interactive Mobile Companion. The name also refers to the genius doctor in the science fiction tale Captain Future.

Also on board are two sets of genetically identical brown female mice, or 20 mousetronauts altogether. Northwestern University researchers want to study the bacteria in the animals guts and compare them to their identical sisters on the ground. They did the same with former NASA astronauts and identical twins Scott and Mark Kelly, during Scotts yearlong space station mission a few years ago.

Groceries include ice cream bars, fresh blueberries from Texas, home to Mission Control, and 60 freeze-dried packets of Death Wish Coffee from New York state. A former NASA astronaut helped arrange the java delivery for the space stations Serena Aunon-Chancellor, a coffee lover.

We like to keep our astronauts super-caffeinated because they work harder then, Shireman joked after liftoff.

New food especially treats is a huge psychological benefit when youre stuck with a space menu that repeats every eight or nine days, Shireman said. The crews going to be opening up and eating blueberries, drinking coffee and eating ice cream, Im sure, before you know it.

A young thug with his pants hanging half off his ass walked into the local welfare office to pick up his check.

He marched up to the counter and said,
"Hi. You know, I just H A T E drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job.. I don't like taking advantage of the system, getting something for nothing." The social worker behind the counter said "Your timing is excellent. We Just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur and
bodyguard for his beautiful daughter. You'll have to drive around in his 2012 Mercedes-Benz CL, and he will supply all of your clothes."

"Because of The long hours, meals will be provided. You'll also be expected to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips. This is rather awkward to say
but you will also have, as part of your job, the
assignment to satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20's and has a rather strong sex drive."

The guy, just plain wide-eyed, said, "You're bullshittin' me!"

The social worker said, "Yeah, well...
You started it." .....
