Good questions Shawnee...I'll give you my responses, after years of following this stuff...
1. It's a decision that's been made by higher authorities to censor this stuff, even higher than your Prez...Simply because it doesn't look good for the DoD, as they're ultimately responsible...( Or at least the IAEA, but the Japs do use US-of-A reactors )...
2. No, it's not denial...I guess that there's simply not enough money to go around when people start making claims for ill-health, due to ionizing radiation exposure...In fact, doctors are controlled by the WHO, that signed a pact together in the 1950's with the IAEA, stating that neither party would release a statement to the world about each other, without the others consent first. They also decided that 1-in-10,000 deaths from cancer was an acceptable death-rate, so that the atmospheric nuclear testing could continue. Even our military are told by military doctors that their ailments are not radiation related...Just google "Ronald Reagan sailors" & see what comes up. The Japanese people donated some money a few years ago to their cause....So the Japs admit neglegence, but your own US-of-A government doesn't...Check out the Fuku thread here, & read through it. It's proving for me to be a great time-capsule of events as they happened.
3. People are sheeple, & they'll follow the safest path...They'll hear only what they want to hear. Fear of the truth here is paramount IMO.
4. Yes, we're ignorant dumb-fuks when we choose to be...Which is nearly all-the-time LOL !
I'd also suggest that you check your food etc, & where it comes from. California & Florida received the worst of the fall-out, meaning that the food produced is, & will be contaminated for ever. You want to be sourcing food from the Southern Hemisphere if possible. You good folks in the US-of-A have been nuked the hardest. Australia welcomes you !

Because we've have been using this stuff ( Nukes ) for well over 75 years now, when the "accidents" do happen, they've learned how to cover-things-up really well.
Very powerful industry is the Nuke industry !!!
You see, with radiation, & all this Nuke-stuff, you can't see it, smell it, taste it, hear it, though you do ingest it, & it goes about mimicking other minerals that your body needs & uses, like calcium etc etc. Over time, it messes with your DNA ( for generations of your family to come ) & cell reproduction structures & quantity. And since cancer is basically the accumulation of bad / dead cell-types ( put simply ), you continue to have a "normal life" until the cancer takes over. There are many many other attributes too, such as strokes, heart disease etc etc. Put very simply, your life has been shortened.
For the people who live in Belarus ( think Chernobyl here ), their life expectancy on average, has been shortened by 10-years...And the Russians managed to seal-up the blown reactor & its contents within 1-month...And yet independent scientific data reveals that so far, over 60,000,000 (million) people have been directly affected by the accident.
In Japan, we have 3 x reactors that have been releasing their junk for over 7-years...It remains "science-fiction" to estimate the casualties here...Though the European Risk Model suggests over 400,000 cancers in Japan alone within a 20-year span ( & counting upwards ) since the time of the accident in 2011.
So there you have it..The Nuke Industry will continue to do it's thing, & we'll suffer a shortened life span.
Thankfully, there's been an 80% growth rate with Solar Energy usage in the US-of-A alone, & less than 10% for coal & even less for Nukes. So people are waking-up about energy preferences, but the Nuke industry IS NOT about "Clean Energy" supply, that's a cloak, it's all about WEAPONS MANUFACTURING.
