Price changes over 20 years

CPIChart2018.png

The chart above (thanks to Olivier Ballou) is an update of a chart we produced last year about this time, and shows the percent changes since January 1997 in the prices of selected consumer goods and services, along with the increase in average hourly earnings in this version (which have increased by 81.5% over the last 21 years vs. the 55.6% increase in the CPI).

See any patterns? Tradeables (with import competition like TVs) vs. non-tradeables (like childcare), manufactured goods (with import competition like clothing and cars) vs. services (medical, hospitals, education), competitive (software) vs. protected industries (healthcare), degree of government involvement/funding/regulation?

Here are some comments from Twitter about the chart, which I posted there a few days ago and which has been re-Tweeted more than 200 times.

1. Blue lines = prices subject to free market forces. Red lines = prices subject to regulatory capture by government. Food and drink is debatable either way. Conclusion: remind me why socialism is so great again.

2. Interesting, almost all of the items above the line are protected industries while those below the line are subject to generally robust competition

3. Im not going to lie, this is one of the most important charts about the economy this century.

4. Imagine that, prices are cheaper with more competition and less government involvement.

5. What areas are government most intrusive? Education and healthcare or manufacturing?

Looks pretty accurate however I would argue that new car prices have also seen quite an uptick! $60-$100k for a pickup?

But then again, government had its hands into GM and Chrysler too... But everything else seems about right! I know a friend of mine who is an attorney said his schooling back in the 70's was affordable and he doesn't even understand how people now days could afford it! And if you think about it a lot of attorneys are in debt $250-$500+k by the time they get out of school and pass their bar! This fact alone is why many attorneys have a bias right off the bat, because they know that risking any kind of censure or black balling could mean they go belly up! That is why you see these big attorneys taking what amounts to parachute retainers because they could honestly get themselves into a long protracted battle that leaves them exposed well after their client walks free or goes to jail.

Doctors are another group of people who will have heavy student loan debts when they finish.. but now days just about any old little thing, even in a community college will set you back $60-$100k! That is house payment money!

What I don't see in that list is car insurance, which here is Michigan is out of control! My kid pays $220 per month for his Firebird with no fault 20/40 (PLPD) which basically means if he smashes it, that's it... no money. It's $400 a month if he wants collision / comprehensive coverage! That's literally a car payment right there! And auto insurance is mandated here in Michigan.

Auto ins has always been a nightmare, specially for younger people. In 75 or so had Geico, my van was about $350 a year. Got a notice "due to custom vans we will be raising prices 10%" It went up to more than double!

Yes schooling was more affordable, seemed it anyway. I have enough credits for a bachelors easily, had VA to pay some but not always. Got an AA but I'm a trade worker and knew it. Probably did just as good $$$ wise too.

My pickup is 2003, has 70K, F350 4x4. Probably my last!

Full coverage on the 2003 F350, 2001 Tundra V8 4x4 and my 2003 Anniversary Z06 Corvette runs me about $1200 a year for all 3 but the farm is insured thru them so I get 20% off both policies. Still it's about $2500 a year for both. I have never had a property claim in my life, no accidents or tickets since mid 80's. Seems alot.

 That's crazy...

The two cars & two motorcycles for full comprehensive + the sugar & spice cost me only $60:00 per-month, for all of them...Or if you rather $15:00 each...

Michigan has the highest automobile insurance cost in the country!

"The average annual car insurance premium is $1,427, according to the report. The state with the highest rates is Michigan, the nation's auto capital. The state with the lowest average rates? North Carolina. Here is a state-by-state breakdown of auto average insurance rates:"

https://clark.com/cars/car-auto-insurance-rates-states-highest-lowest/

Even for the Zephyr it's $85 per month (full coverage) for me and the wife and were both over 40 with clean records and no claims until the kid started driving. Last time I was in an accident was many years ago in the 560 Mercedes (think I even wrote about it in the W126 forum). Anyway, I fixed all the stuff myself and never even submitted any claim to the insurance for that... then the kid popped the truck and they paid me out for it - so I can almost understand his high rates! LOL

Even still, they tax me HARD for the Corvette @ $250 per month full coverage zero deductible 100/300 so I only keep it on during the summer. It's not 26 years old so it does not qualify for historic plates and insurance and lately I just been turning it on and off as I plan to drive it since my insurance company has 24/7 phone service. This pretty much amounts to a flat $10 per day it's active! Soon as you tell an insurance company the word "Corvette" they grin because they know you're getting fucked! lol

The reason Michigan insurance is so expensive is because of the mandatory $1,000,000 medical cap... It's almost unheard of anywhere else! It's a good thing if you are ever in a serious wreck or hit by an uninsured motorist.

So good they claim if you're dying of a heart attack you should get in your car and back out into the road as the coverage you would have while driving would be better than most health insurance caps! LOL, not sure if that is true but damn it's expensive for insurance here in Michigan!

Just imagine if we had Medicare for all, it would eliminate the need for the $1,000,000 medical cap on your car insurance. And you'd pay a lot less for health insurance too!

While Medicare for all is a better solution than private for profit insurance companies...

Medicare for all is not with out problems as well...

You should understand it is not a solve all solution...

Medicare for all BIGGEST issue is giving the government the right to have any say in how you live your life...

If the government gets to make ALL my health decisions then it is not a solution at all...

Most Americans are not willing to give away freedom for package healthcare rations from the government...

It seems we are giving away rights either way though. On one side to a freely elected government with representatives who are answerable to the people. And on the other side - private for profit corporations who are answerable to their shareholders. I would Imagine if Congress were put on the same Medicare plan as the rest of us, it would quickly become much more generous in its coverage. Also it would require a reimbursement adjustment for providers to be more competitive with what private insurance pays. All quite doable, and long overdue. Everything that is wrong with medicare is easier and cheaper to fix than everything that is wrong with private insurance.

Where you fail is this sentence..."Everything that is wrong with medicare is easier and cheaper to fix than everything that is wrong with private insurance."

Nothing government controlled is EVER cheaper...Government is the reason healthcare and education are so expensive...

Education...Government giving out cheap predatory loans where the government makes money is a scam...and all colleges did was raise the cost EVEN more so now the only way to get a continuing education is to borrow through government loans...

Government is who put us in the healthcare model we currently have...their interference took away the free market principals...That is the point of the thread...the red lines are all those government FUCKED WITH...

The blue lines were left to the free market...

the next problem is you make it sound like everything about medicare can be fixed...

IT CAN NOT...

Medicare as a whole is solid....expanding it to all becomes a simple point of where does the line get drawn on what remains the decision of the individual vs the decision of some government bureaucrat, and until that one is resolved it is never going to happen...

You grossly over simplify MEDICARE FOR ALL....

I am in favor of a single payer or dual payer system without allowing private for profit industry to remain the primary...

A version of Medicare for all MIGHT get you there...

What REALLY needs to happen is to remove ALL middle men...

leave it between the doctor and patient...only to do this then you have to allow the doctor to refuse service...and we are hesitant to do that also....

It is not an easy issue...and constantly declaring medicare for all as the answer is ignorant...you tend to ignore the elephant in the room all over getting a government tax levied to pay for your healthcare cost...

which is a double edged sword...to say the least...

I will give you a really simple example...

using a motorcycle as transportation...

injuries from motorcycle accidents are far more costly in comparison to medical cost from an accidents in a truck.

since the tax payer is footing the bill does the tax payer get to decide what type a of vehicle you can drive?

now you can act like well who cares....but it is a big issue...

motorcycle is very efficient...saves the individual all sorts of money...is cheaper to insure and to physical property they do less damage and they are inexpensive to replace...gets 100x the gas mileage...

having a drink? will the government return to prohibition due to the health cost of alcohol?

smokers? cigarettes going to be made illegal?

cigars? pipes?

something closer to home....soft drinks?

all sorts of snack foods that are not particularly healthy...are they going to be outlawed?

it is a huge can of worms....

I am 100% in agreement with this! I think this alone would solve the problem almost overnight as well!

It's a glaring example of why we can't trust people once they take office, because they instantly only think of themselves while the rest of us get crap!

There are some fair points here... Drinkers, smokers and people who live in a bad area or work in a dangerous job are all people whom a bean counter will be actively looking to drop from the rolls!

I could see what Nuffan is saying here, that eventually they would try and find a way to penalize people for any reason.

one of the reasons for increase in the cost of insurance......

did you all know that sometime last year insurance companies decided that ALL licensed drivers that live in your household MUST be listed on all policies.  so here i am on a limited income

living with my daughter and family of 4....suddenly my insurance increased about $30 a month...

so now ALL 4 of them also have to list all licensed drivers ......

you do the math.  thats how much more the insurance companies are making.

i understand they have to cover them selves.  however, can i just say, i have been hit 3 x's, 2 of which we know were illegals/unlicensed/uninsured drivers. the 3rd one was a driver who

sideswiped me and stepped on the gas and took off!  fortunately there were witnesses and they got descriptions....needless to say, NONE of them showed up in court. i was left holding

the bag for ALL costs.  i was never reimbursed by anyone for any damages.

once again, we, taxpaying law abiding citizens of USA are paying the price for illegals who ignore the law!
