$15 minimum wage

If $15 Minimum Wage Is Such a Good Idea, Why Did AOCs Bar Close Down?

Among those calling for a $15 minimum wage is self-described Democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Before her election to Congress, Ocasio-Cortez worked at as a bartender at a popular New York bar in Union Square called The Coffee Shop. How popular? Investors Business Daily said the bar was frequented by A-list celebrities and featured on Sex and the City.' Despite its popularity, The Coffee Shop went out of business last year. Its co-owner, Charles Milite, cited as the primary reason the citys minimum wage law. The minimum wage is going up, said Milite, and we have a huge number of employees.

If any company can't pay a living wage, they have a failed business model and should be allowed to die. It's just the free market self-correcting.

Minimum wage is not a free market principal....

VERY FEW pay 7.25 per hour anymore...

and if there was no minimum wage I would bet NO ONE would be paying it...

everyone in the US would be paying well over 10 per hour if NOT for an artificial minimum wage...

certain employers do not try and negotiate with labor when the government backs a minimum wage...

it is the real tragedy of minimum wage...still at 7.25 and the few make that because the government has said it is OKAY to pay someone no more than that....

It is clear you have no idea what a free market is...or how it works so you should just shut the fuck up...

It was a capitalist named Henry Ford who realized paying your employees a solid wage was GOOD for business...

Free market works when fucking morons like POWERSTROKER stay out of it's way...

Everything the left wing sells you on....IS WRONG...

We haven't always had a minimum wage in this country, are you suggesting that prior to its implementation everybody was making more money (adjusted for inflation)?

I haven't checked yet, but if that's your position I can surely do some research about the reasons a minimum wage was created in the first place.

It was first introduced in the United States with the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (FLSA). Passed under President Roosevelt, this act called for the first national minimum wage of 25 cents an hour. ... Increased wages also cost (some) jobs; often those are on the middle or higher end of the income spectrum. At the time the law passed, the countries first minimum wage was .25 per hour...(about $4.00 in 2012)

It was due to the post depression ERA when people in non union jobs would try and under cut their neighbor to get the job...

It quickly became the standard...which is why it is a bad idea...it has never been set to rise with inflation...

Ever since it was created it has always been TOO LOW...

the original minimum wage was equal to about 4:00 per hour (adjusted for inflation) in 2012... minimum wage was $7.25 per hour and that was still too low...

minimum wage 7 years later is STILL $7.25 and WAY TOO LOW...

which makes the argument that it should be abolished...your average human could negotiate for a much better rate if the government didn't make it law that an employer only has to pay you $7.25 per hour...

It becomes the Crudgel the employer uses to keep the labor cost down....

Rather than abolish it, why not raise it and index it to inflation?

Because it does not really serve a purpose any longer...

and secondly....Inflation is not a constant, it is variable...

you can get it right today...a year from now it will no longer be correct...

This has been the problem with a rising minimum wage...

and every time  you raise the minimum it in turn affects the Consumer Price index which factors in the rate of inflation...

Why can't Employee and Employer negotiate rate of pay...why do we need to have a set minimum?

I do not think we should have a minimum wage...companies that do not pay well will not stay in business as they will never keep staff...

that will self correct VERY fast when left to free market principals...
