Comey comes clean

Fox interview with Wallace.

Comey Comes Clean FBI FISA Abuse Not Acceptable I Was Wrong (Video)

There were mistakes I consider more consequential than this during my tenure, he says

James Comey admitted Sunday that he was wrong about the FBIs handling of surveillance warrants against Carter Page, who the former FBI director acknowledged was treated unfairly by having his name leaked to the press as a suspected Russian agent.

He is right. I was wrong, Comey said in an interview on Fox News Sunday in reference to the findings of Michael Horowitz, the Justice Departments inspector general.

Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace pressed Comey about Horowitzs report, which found significant inaccuracies in the FBIs applications for Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants against Page. Horowitz found that FBI agents and officials made 17 major errors or omissions in the FISA applications.

The report said that FBI agents withheld information in the applications that undercut the theory that Page was working for Russia. They also withheld information that undermined the credibility of Christopher Steele and his dossier, which Horowitz said was a central and essential component of the FISA application. FBI agents failed to reveal in their FISA applications that Steele told agents that one of his sources for the dossier was a boaster and embellisher. Investigators also failed to disclose that one of Steeles primary sources disavowed significant parts of the dossier during interviews in January 2017.

The report undercut Comey and other former FBI leaders defense of the FBIs surveillance of Page, a former Naval officer.

I have total confidence that the FISA process was followed, and that the entire case was handled in a thoughtful and responsible way by DOJ and the FBI, Comey said on Dec. 7, 2018 in a clip played by Wallace on Sunday.

Comey acknowledged Sunday that his comments at the time were false.

I was overconfident in the procedures that the FBI and Justice had built over 20 years. I thought they were robust enough, he told Wallace.

Im responsible for this.

Comey also agreed that it was fair to say that the FBI gave the FISA Court false information, especially regarding Page.

Carter Page was treated unfairly, most significantly by his name being made public. Hes a United States citizen, and it never should have been made public, and its an outrage.

But while Comey admitted that the FBI made errors in the FISA process, he pushed back aggressively on Wallaces characterization that the FBI engaged in misconduct, or that agents and officials were politically motivated against Donald Trump. He also said that if he were still FBI chief, he would not quit in the wake of Horowitzs damning report.

If you were still there, and all of this came out, and it turned out it happened on your watch, would you resign? Wallace asked.

No, I dont think so, said Comey. There were mistakes I consider more consequential than this during my tenure.

President Trump on Sunday ripped former FBI Director James Comey for finally admitting he was wrong and suggests possible jail time for the disgraced cop.

Trump tweeted, So now Comeys admitting he was wrong. Wow, but hes only doing so because he got caught red handed. He was actually caught a long time ago. So what are the consequences for his unlawful conduct. Could it be years in jail? Where are the apologies to me and others, Jim?

Trump's whistleblower claim receives 2019 'Lie of the Year' award from fact-checker PolitiFact

USA Today   https://www.yahoo.com/news/trumps-whistleblower-claim-receives-2019-225702115.html

President Donald Trump did not receive the distinction of being named Time magazine's "Person of the Year," but his claims about the anonymous whistleblower did score "Lie of the Year" from fact-checking website PolitiFact.

Trump has repeatedly said the anonymous whistleblower whose complaint sparked the impeachment inquiry was "almost completely wrong" about his July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a claim that PolitiFact rated the most significant falsehood of 2019.

The president is accused of using the power of his office to pressure Zelensky to open investigations into domestic political rivals, and leveraging nearly $400 million in military aid to do so. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on two articles of impeachmentabuse of power and obstruction of Congressthat were passed along partisan lines by the Judiciary Committee.

What's next for impeachment?: Full House vote this week on charges against Trump, Senate trial likely

Do we have to protect somebody that gave a totally false account of my conversation?" Trump said in October. "I dont know. You tell me.

"The Whistleblower got it sooo wrong that HE must come forward," Trump also tweeted in November.

In the complaint, the whistleblower cited officials who listened in on the call, saying that Trump "sought to pressure the Ukrainian leader to take actions to help the President's 2020 reelection bid."

The whistleblower said Trump asked Zelensky to perform investigations into 2020 frontrunner Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, and the origins of the hacking of the Democratic National Committee in 2016 that were previously determined to have been a Russian effort. The complaint also said Trump asked Zelensky to communicate with Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani and Attorney General William Barr.

The majority of the details in the whistleblower complaint line up with the summary of the call released by the White House. Trump did ask the Ukraine leader to investigate the Bidens, as well as the Ukrainian 2016 election interference theory that has been put forward by Trump and his allies without evidence. He mentioned Giuliani and Barr multiple times.

The whistleblower, who remains anonymous despite Republican calls for public identification, transmitted a complaint to the inspector general for the intelligence community in August after the phone call.

PolitiFact called Trump's claim "more than ridiculous and wrong," also noting that the "Lie of the Year" distinction is the only time the website uses the term "lie" to describe claims. The fact-checker said Trump has repeated versions of the statement against the whistleblower more than 80 times since the complaint was released publicly Sept. 26.

In previous years, "Lie of the Year" has been given to claims from politicians on both sides of the aisle and online entities alike. In 2018, it went to online actors targeting survivors of the Parkland, Fla., shooting; in 2015, was various statements by Trump during his campaign; and in 2013, it was a claim by former President Barack Obama about the Affordable Care Act.

Trump has received the distinction four times. In 2015, he denounced PolitiFact as "a totally left-wing group" and "bad news." The site is nonpartisan and owned by the nonprofit Poynter Institute.

"Where the complaint and the president veer apart is on what the events mean," PolitiFact wrote, as Republicans interpret the call as harmless, as Trump was right to look into corruption, and Trump has said it was "perfect."

"No matter the motivations or the political outcome, testimony from the whistleblower would not change the underlying facts of what Trump said," PolitiFact said.

Why would it be inadmissible, A judge still issued the warrant? People have already been convicted for crimes and are presently serving time for convictions that stemmed from this initial investigation. All this means is that the FISA judge will consider future warrant requests from the involved agents with more scrutiny.

I don't think so PowerStroker, it's new evidence. Everyone suspected the Clinton funded Steele dossier was bogus - but now we know.

People found guilty for murder have to be set free if new evidence comes to light about evidence, or corruption that makes any such evidence the fruit of the poisonous tree. Sometimes this stuff overturns verdicts going back 20-30 years!

The one rejection and denial was probably from right leaning agents trying to investigate a Democrat.

It was an ill-conceived idea that was destined to fail long before Obama took office, it just happened to fail on his watch.

But on the up side, Bin Laden was killed on his watch, so I guess when you average the two out, Obama comes out ahead. Especially when you consider that 911 happened on Bush's watch.
