I wish we lived in a world where people were smart enough to understand that not everything they hear on the internet is true. But unfortunately we also have the freedom to be complete idiots.

Generally I think freedom of speech is a great thing. There are exceptions like you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theatre etc. And it seems now, after the attack against the Capitol which almost ended American democracy itself, we should certainly have a discussion about just exactly how many lies can be tolerated. It's starting to look as though the lies that inspired the insurrection as dangerous as the crowded theatre thing, and even worse. There are members of this very site who are sympathetic to the insurrectionists, who believe the 2020 election was stolen for no other reason than they have been consuming too much of other people's "speech freedom." Mind you, these are lies they specifically sought out in order to satisfy their own biases.

Freedom of speech is a noble thing, but so is truth... These two noble ideas it seems, are at odds with eachother. At least in the minds of certain people, so it's certainly something to think about. I think for me personally, after having witnessed the insurrection against the Capitol... I wouldn't mind having some of my potential speech curtailed if the result was a truth based world.

Sometimes truth is simply a matter of perception... You can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink!

I think most people (read that as the people who lost) feel the election was "stolen" is because of the pandemic and the never before done unsolicited mail in ballots. When people say it was stolen, it's in a way that suggest that some slight of hand or changes to the goal post at the last minute... I was on board that train for awhile myself until I come to grips with the fact that it was Trump who allowed Fauci to shut down the country for two weeks, so he opened that door himself. Now when people say Democrats "Stole" the election, I process it like someone who got such a good deal on something they "stole in"... in this case, Trump shut down the country thinking it would help him, and Democrats swooped right in there and used it to their advantage. Let's hope Biden doesn't make the mistake of shutting down the country and I think he and the Democrats will be okay for the most part... but know, I have never voted Democrat in my entire life! But faced with another term of Trump? I dunno... I used to think he shut everything down because he cared about everyone, but as time passed I am starting to feel like he pulled one over on ALL of us... as he has done to countless others.

If there was a Republican President, with a Republican congress majority - how would you feel about a Ministry of Truth? And how can we be sure it won't prevent people from bouncing ideas off one another to have spirited debate?

It's failing the sniff test... the last thing anyone wants is to be lied to, but it isn't the almighty who will run this campaign! There was a much better way to spin the Hunter Biden laptop than to have Twitter abuse it's power to shut down a story that turned out to be true. That's a serious problem right there! You'll have to have a panel composed of an equal part Republican and Democrat to where every stalemate means it flies, if only to allow proper debate. And that panel should change yearly and it's members be voted on electronically by we the people. And even then it just feels like trying to play god... Wouldn't it just be easier to let people be free to make up their own mind?

We will see... If we go to War Biden will have War Powers, and such a ministry would just be redundant...

Under those circumstances, a ministry of truth might be more important than ever. But such a thing must be completely non partisan, and not even a government agency... Perhaps such an institution could be based in academia rather than government. For example, if someone (or Russia) buys a political advertisement on Facebook that contains false claims. It could be forwarded to 3 separate state universities for analysis... If all 3 agree that the information is false, the ad is taken down and the person who purchased it is banned from buying any more advertisements on social media for a year and forfeits their purchase cost. And if they do this a few times they get banned for life.

I think the people at counterpunch need to lay off the crack... At the point where Russia invaded Ukraine and started killing people is when they took ownership of the WAR in Ukraine. What the United States does or does not do is really irrelevant because outside of going to war with Russia, we don't have much say in what Russia does. You should also know that the USA does not invade and take over countries, we may be forced to take action in many places around the world, but when we leave we'll usually rebuild and hand back said land to the people. Some nut-jobs might suggest that the USA took the United States from the Native Americans, but you and I have already been down that road.. and so have the Native Americans, they lost. No doubt the Native Americans were just explorers from Mexico and South America who had failed to colonize and set up a productive society. As a tax paying American, I think they are treated quite well... much better than the people in Ukraine right now.

With regards to Hunter Biden, if what you say was true then I'd say this "laptop" was just something to keep people distracted... Why in the world would Hunter drop off a laptop with all kinds of sensative information on it to some person he didn't even know?

I think Hunter is basically Joe Biden's version of Jack Bower... GIMMIE A NAME!

I agree with you that throwing money at the problem isn't the answer... I have seen some people suggest that these events CANNOT be stopped regardless if we were here or not, and our best bet in terms of money is preparing with how to deal with them, since there is nothing our over-inflated ego's are going to be able to do to stop it. Kind of puts things in perspective, No?

R1. Seeing how far one can stretch one's borders before anyone says / does anything-about-it has gone-on since forever. I'd suggest the initiative here is to keep military spending growing, & showing stories on the news about warships & military shyte that then indicates where more of our taxes are needed...So rather than having peace-talks & feeding & educating the people of the world, we keep everyone held in fear with the threat of war with these images...And the military spending keeps growing...
