Dyno Testing your engines.

Yo,

So I just visited "Nick's Garage" on You-Tube, & though he's a specialist on the Chrysler / Mopar engines of the muscle car era, he allowed some friends from Ontario to come & visit, & test their new engine on his Dyno, hoping to get to the 800-Hp power mark...

The engine is a Dodge 440 Big-Block, bored & stroked to 535 cubes, Stainless Steel caps, balanced & blue-printed, alloy-heads, EFI, plus many custom-made parts such as the intake manifold, so as to fit a Super-charger in place...

It's good to see them battle in real time to get stuff set-up & working, whilst making changes along the way to get their numbers, including subtle ignition-timing changes, air / fuel ratio updates, & working with a range of super-charger drive-pulley-diameters to get to their results. The pulley sizes they had to play with to get their torque & power numbers were from 3 & 3/4", down to 2 & 3/4", & they found them with a 3 & 1/4" pulley, @ around 6,000-rpm...

That's over 800-hp, & 800-ft-lbs of torque...And they would have found more I suggest, but I think Nick was starting to feel a little worried about his poor dyno lol, so I suggest even more power & torque was possible with further super-charger pulley size reductions, & further testing...

So it seems that 1,000-Hp on the dyno "is" a possible reality ! And it's good to see these guys making the numbers for everyone to see. Well done Nick !

Enjoy this one folks, it's a good show, & was filmed only 10-days or so ago !

I think it's funny how you believe these people got an accurate 800HP rating out of their dyno, yet for whatever reason you have problems believing Fords dyno can't measure the 900+ HP on the Hertz Shelby Mustang GT-500...

Cubes = HP

The general rule-of-thumb, has always been, that you can safely, & reliably, get 1-HP per CI of displacement, & depending on inherent design, go another 25-30% over that mark.

Over the years, EFI & its derivatives have made great HP numbers, when compared to carb'd versions, usually in the Torque dept. And the more Torque you can acquire, the more HP potential. But manufacturers opted for efficiency & fuel economy + easy starts with EFI, & computer reprogramming isn't easy or cheap. Plus once you reach a certain threshold of HP, you need massive amounts of fuel to keep the engine cool...

Superchargers are a different animal, in that the volumetric efficiency over a std naturally aspirated engine of around 80%, suddenly leap to whatever percentage of over-filling you want, from say 100-125% depending on blower-drive-pulley-size...

On these points above, lets do some mathematics...

440 cubes x 1.25 = 550-Hp.

550-Hp x 1.25 in supercharged guise = 687.5 -HP, or in round numbers, 700-Hp

The folks in the video played around with timing, fuel ratio's, pulley diameter, & DYNO-LOAD-SETTINGS to get their claimed 800-Hp...And poor Nick looked like he was shyting-his-pants at whether his new dyno was going to take a dump...

Anyhow, they got what they got using cubes & blowers, not added-on electric-motors.

Peace !

Yo,

I just reread my first post, & need to do some recalculations, as the engine used has been bored & stroked to 535 cubes...

Let's see if the simple maths & old general rule-of-thumb principals calculate-out closer to 800-Hp...

535 x 1.25 = 668.75 Hp ( potentially in naturally aspirated, thought modified form ).

668.75 x 1.25 = 835.94 Hp ( in supercharged guise, @ 125% Volumetric Efficiency ).

So there you go...

The real drama is trying to get that power to the ground.

Yes Rastus, but the folks at Fords have these little things called VVT solinoids that allow on the fly adjustment at each camshaft while it's running within a spit second to achieve maximum timing at any given RPM that was not ever really seen before. The same can be said of the super high pressure direct injection injectors, and the ignition system that is no only digital but paired with everything above and working in a high speed CAN envornment to wring out every last little pony. I won't mention the 3.8 liter supercharger, because yeah...

Anyway, we can agree to disagree -- but what we both can agree on is getting the power to the ground!

I should take Brandee off and rent the GT-500 in Las Vegas or Miami or something... You would think I'd have a better chance of testing it out in the desert... but damn wouldn't it suck to fucking blow that thing up in the middle of some Nevada desert with no cell service! LOL

I am open for suggestions on the best location for me to test this beast.

Montana...

If you really want to get your moneys-worth, Montana is the go imo.

Why you ask ???...

Lots of open roads with no-one on them, & the Police ( if caught ) will issue you with a lowly $05:00 fine for speeding.

Very true ! The fine may be a little-more in today's times, but I did see a TV segment once, where a $05:00 ticket was issued not so long ago...And we here in Oz were getting lumbered with $200:00+ & points  for the same misdemeanor.
