Russia

Man is it just me or is there some funny stuff brewing over there with our friends in Russia?

First there was what they called a terriorist blast, then Poland's President goes down in Russia. Things have been so quiet over there since the last time they had to march a country back home.

Anyone got anything Juicy on the days of our lives in Russia?

How about this?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/2511618/Russia-to-move-rockets-to-EU-border-if-Poland-hosts-US-missile-shield.html

Something about Poland letting the US put rockets in their country.

Then there is the nuclear tready.

One guy by the name of Tony Griffen went so far as to say

QUOTE -

In light of the tragedy in Smolensk where much of the Polish Government elite has perished, Obama is dropping the ball and squandering political capital so hard earned by previous Presidents. Outside of a short, routine speech, there is a resounding silence from Washington. Our staunchest ally, President Lech Kaczynski is dead. Vladimir Putin, a shrewd politician, sensing Obama has left him a huge opening, has launched a massive offensive. He is everywhere, he is personally supervising the investigation, he is constantly seen on TV walking among the wreckage, he is seen hugging Polish Prime Minister (an image unimaginable even recently to many Poles), he is sending Medvedev to the funeral. He has even ordered a showing of a dramatic film Katyn in prime time on Russian state-owned TV depicting the 1940 mass murder of Polish officers by the Russian NKVD. That last move is unprecedented for a Russian leader, but Putin is unafraid to take risks where major gain is possible. Putin is scoring points, Obama is silent.

- END QUOTE -
Any thoughts from you guys on the left? President Lech Kaczynski was an Ally yet I have to go deap sea surfing to get some insight? Oh thats right, PowerStroker and party is only good with Domestic issues.

Domestic policy issues are the only consistent place where the two parties disagree.

As far as foreign policy (with the exception of trade issues) The left and right are often on the same page.  To insinuate the plane crash was caused by a Russian conspiracy is simply irresponsible without proof.  I could easily say the crash that killed senator Paul Wellstone was a conspiracy from the Bush family... and I don't just mean Bush Jr.  Without proof though I would be simply laughed off as some bleeding heart liberal, so I'm keeping my powder dry, for now.

Another possibility though is that Obama knows exactly what brought that plane down, but is more concerned with making agreements with foreign heads of state to secure nuclear materials than to go on a witch hunt that could undermine relations with an ally we need right now.

LOL! Obama knows exactly what brought that plane down? LOL

Hey PowerStroker... The plane went down in Russia! Obama knows what the Russians want him to. Statements like the one in bold above are proof you have your head WAY UP HIS ASS. Obama don't even know if his own plans will work, let alone what happend overseas!

The Russians are well aware Obama is ALL about handing things in, complete or not. Just like he accepted the Nobel peace prize before he did anything, just like he passed an incomplete and flawed heathcare bill and if you think the Russians arent smart, well then consider how much we spent to topple Saddam in the name of national security. Now look at the Poland government, who was going to allow us to put rockets in their country. I really dont need to say much more.

I would imagine the US will know as much as the Russians want us to know about that plane crash, and I also feel the same will be true when it comes to following the new arms treaty.

Are you dissatisfied with the 1500 warhead limit?

How many times do we need to be able to destroy all life on the planet before you're satisfied with the size of our arsenal?

You didn't answer the question.

We have countless land based missile silos, we have stealth bombers which can drop warheads anywhere undetected, and each one of our ballistic missile submarines has the power to level every major city in the northern hemisphere... We have 18 of those subs between the 2 fleets.

How many times do we need to be able to eliminate ALL life on the planet and permanently change the worlds climate in such a way that it could no longer support life before you are satisfied with the size of our arsenal???

There comes a point where penis envy is more destructive than helpful.  You sir have crossed that point a long time ago.

It's easy for the tree huggers to say things like how much is enough when doing battle with non-nuclear nations. To answer your question about how much is enough I say there is no such thing as enough when at war. I'd rather be over-prepared than under-prepared.

When and IF the time ever comes for WWIII we will be running with what we got and HOPING it is enough. Any bullshit treaty that might be signed today will mean NOTHING at that time of wat. A complete waste of time really.

I never said that Russia shot down the plane, but with the chain of events and history one could wonder.

Answer some questions for me PowerStroker,

(1) What was the President of Poland and much of the higher up's flying over Russia for? Do you know?
(2) What were the Poles willing to allow America to place in their country?

I think Russia was somewhat pissed that at one time we wanted to point rockets at them in Poland, then just a year or two later Obama goes over there asking for a missle treaty. Not everyone on earth is required to see past Obama's fence jumping.

The cold war is over, suck it up. Turns out the U.S. and Russia can co-exist after all. Now these vast stockpiles of nuclear arms are a liability just waiting for some terrorist group to steal. When that happens it doesn't matter how many we have in our arsenal because the target is no longer a specific state with borders, but rather a terrorist group that isn't defined to a specific country.

Look, I never said the cold war wasnt over between us and them. There is however many other nations that are our allies in Europe that Russia could decide to attack. Poland IS an ally. So was/is Georgia. The cold war might not seem over to them because they count on our nukes and support just like we count on them when 30,000 troops need a drop point.

It is quite clear that Russia and the United States have been the big nuclear arms players for quite some time. It is the very reason we "co-exist". It's not your boy Obama, or his mentor from the right Reagan, it's the nukes. Meanwhile the LHC located in Switzerland paid for by the European nations we so regularly stab in the back is smashing atoms at a record pace. While American government only seems to have a memory of 4-8 years before "Change", many of these other nations still harbor hate for this country going back 50 years+ so I say FUCK the idea of getting rid of anything we got. We paid to build it, and if its still good we damn well better save it. Anyone ever take the time to think that much of East's governments have all sat down at a table the US was not invited to? What do you think they talk about? Making the USA a better place?

How a terrorist group could "Steal" a war head is beyond me. I am pretty sure these things are kept under close watch. Not only that these kinds of things dont come with a wick that you light, you need hardware to make them work. See it would seem more likley that a government would give another country a nuke and act like it was stolen.

None the less, it doesnt matter if our arsenal was 1500 strong or 15,000,000 strong when it comes to security. We could have only 10 and still have the threat of theft to contend with. This fact makes your liability statement somewhat lame brain.

We co-existed with Russia before Nukes were invented.  All they do now is assure mutual annihilation if one side gets trigger happy whether purposefully or accidentally.

I'm not saying disarm, I'm saying we have way - way more firepower than we will ever need, and guarding and maintaining it is very expensive and costs all of us in higher taxes.

Anyone ever take the time to think that much of East's governments have all sat down at a table the US was not invited to? What do you think they talk about? Making the USA a better place?

Nope, they are talking about making their home a better place, just like we do.

How a terrorist group could "Steal" a war head is beyond me. I am pretty sure these things are kept under close watch.

Oh boy, you are operating under a false sense of security.  There are many stockpiles of highly enriched (weapons grade) uranium scattered throughout former USSR provinces that are lightly guarded due to lack of money.  Those governments are very poor and don't have the revenue to protect these things properly.  This is why Clinton, Bush, and Obama have been proactive in acquiring as much of this foreign material as possible, but there is still way too much out there with lax security for any of us to feel comfortable.

Not only that these kinds of things don't come with a wick that you light, you need hardware to make them work. See it would seem more likely that a government would give another country a nuke and act like it was stolen.

To launch a warhead, yes, you need some hardware that is just as loosely guarded in the former Soviet provinces.  The real problem is the loose material ie: plutonium or highly enriched uranium that isn't inside a warhead.  You don't even need a wick to start a reaction with that shit.  Drop it from waist height and you've got Hiroshima part deux, or enough dirty bomb material to render New York uninhabitable for 10000 years.

None the less, it doesn't matter if our arsenal was 1500 strong or 15,000,000 strong when it comes to security. We could have only 10 and still have the threat of theft to contend with. This fact makes your liability statement somewhat lame brain.

It's not the theft of US arms I'm worried about as we have more military funding than all other nations combined.  It's foreign stockpiles that I'm very very worried about theft by a terrorist group.  If forging a treaty with Russia can reduce both sides enough to still maintain mutual assured destruction, but get rid of some of the excess thus preventing it from falling into terrorist hands, then I'm all for it.

Back before nukes it was the long boat ride that allowed us to co-exist.

I'm not saying disarm, I'm saying we have way - way more firepower than we will ever need, and guarding and maintaining it is very expensive and costs all of us in higher taxes.

I agree that any nukes that are past their experation date should be converted into fuel, but weapons that are still good should be saved. Having way more money than you need doesnt mean you should start throwing it away. The same goes with wepons.

Nope, they are talking about making their home a better place, just like we do.

You dont think they talk about how nice it would be to tell us to fuck off and mind our own business?

Oh boy, you are operating under a false sense of security.  There are many stockpiles of highly enriched (weapons grade) uranium scattered throughout former USSR provinces that are lightly guarded due to lack of money.  Those governments are very poor and don't have the revenue to protect these things properly.  This is why Clinton, Bush, and Obama have been proactive in acquiring as much of this foreign material as possible, but there is still way too much out there with lax security for any of us to feel comfortable.

See this is the thing... I dont trust Obama. I feel that the Russians will dispose of inferior weapons, while we will end up turning good weapons into fuel. The end result will be us having less firepower than Russia. That is not acceptable. Then there is the chance we could get into a fight trying to argue over the details.

Well then do something about the loose material. I would imagine there is a significant amount of protection one would need to handle plutonium or HEU. So many countries are getting into nuclear power now days that this loose material will become more and more prevalent regardless what we do with our arsenal.

PowerStroker... There is no such thing as excess when it comes to Pussy, Money, horsepower, beer and Weapons. As mentioned above there is a possibility we could re-spark the cold war trying to even deal with these Russians. Arguments about what qualifys, inspectors, and all sorts of enforcement obsticles almost ensure a bumpy ride. I myself dont mind a bumpy ride, providing there isnt a bed full of nuclear weapons in the back!

So..... Here we are in a bit of a tiff with our Russian friends.

Apparently as everyone must already know by now, some 10 people have been arrested and are being considered spies for the Russian government.

I must admit also that the timing of this breaking news, being right after the G20 where President Obama and the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met for a global confrence is just a slight bit odd as well.

Anna Chapman who seems to be a NY'er as shown in this photo below at the Statue of Liberty was also arrested there.

While she is easy on the eyes, you have to agree that Russia is playing a very good hand in what many will agree is "Global Poker", with claims that the undercover opperatives used spying methods much like 007 and many other such Hollywood spy movies.

What I can tell you is this... It does not seem to be working, this relationship between Obama and Putin. Very "Cat and Mouse" if you ask me. I sometimes wonder if Obama is trying to provoke the Russian Prime Minister, however I am unsure what that would do to increase Obama's chances for re-election.

I can not deny that we have MANY Russian viewers at this site per day, none of whom have registered as members. It does not bother me that Russians like my good journalisim, it's just a reminder that they are watching and waiting.... But for what?

I just feel like this whole thing, it's timing and many of the past events is increasing the tempo between US and Russian relations. Much like taking a ball bat to a hornets nest there is sure to be some who feel violated.

I stand behind the people who took action to detain and expose these would be spys for the sake of our nations security, even if President Obama wishes to act like he had no idea it was going to happen. Why President Obama did not have the balls to stand behind the arresting officers and issue a statement of

Quote from The Associated Press and NBC's Robert Windrem-

"White House spokesman Robert Gibbs labored to show that the arrests were a law enforcement matter one not driven by the president, even though President Barack Obama was informed and played down any political consequences.

Obama was asked about the matter by reporters twice Tuesday. He declined to comment both times.

Gibbs said Obama was aware before he met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the White House on Thursday that the case was under investigation, but the two leaders did not discuss it. Another White House spokesman, Tommy Vietor, said Obama did not know the exact timing of the arrests."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37982175/ns/us_news-security

I don't think it is a wise move for Obama to portray an image to Putin that he is clueless about the actions of his agencies. I also think it would anger the Russians more to act ignorant rather than a firm "Calling of their hand". Obama should have spoken with regards to these matters with a firm and unwavering responce, one that clearly opposed the actions of the Russians involved and praise for the members of law enforcement who uncovered them. From all that I read it almost appears as Obama is taking a possition that he is not in control, and that my friends is why many feel Obama is more of a liability than an asset. Much like in Arizona we have the same kind of issue. People here illegally, only this time since they are Russian, they must be spies in addition to being here illegally. In both cases we have a President who is trying to distance himself from the fall out of securing the nation rather than riding the wave that would surley win him respect from the nations citizens he is President of.

What do you think?

Well, Putin is being a dick right now to be sure. Still not worth US military involvement. Best to isolate him with economic sanctions until his own people demand change.

I know this works because Bush's policies were like economic sanctions against working class people, and in 08 we demanded change.

As if that wasn't bad enough your master is picking fights with super-power nations! Foreign policy under Obama is far worse now than it has ever been!

So I guess everyone has folks like you to thank for this.

I don't know PowerStroker.. I'll agree with you that the stock market is WAY up from where it was back in late 2007, and the chant "not in this economy" has died down since then also... However, how great is the economy for people like you and I? Not so great! Banks are only lending to the rich, and the devide between rich and poor is greater today than it ever was, in fact it would almost seem like there is no longer a middle class! The people once thought of as middle class are really lower income by today's inflation standards.

I should caution anyone feeling too good about the economy as a result of the stock market, since we all know the market goes up, then comes back down. Even a 500 point drop on the DOW seems to immediately stoak fears.

Id really like to agree with you about the economy, but as it stands banks aren't lending and not much has really changed since 2008! I got into my home back in 2012, if only because the economy was so down that I was able to get a private land contract. Had it not been for good people, my family might not be in a home today!

Im sorry, but I'm not feeling the economy is so great for people like you and I, but I welcome you to share examples of how great it has been for you, if only to cheer me up a little.

Seems we're slipping back into a cold war, and Ukraine will likely be one of the proxies, to be followed by Taiwan. It seems Russia and China are joining forces to represent the authoritarianism side, while the US and Europe are the side that believes in democracy. But we haven't done a good job recently of living up to that ideal - what with all of the racist voting restrictions going into effect here in the red states. Ukraine would probably be best off if they tried to be a neutral party, not favoring either side, assuming Putin would allow it, but I don't think so. If we/NATO send weapons to Ukraine to defend themselves, Putin will interpret it as them taking our side, and if we don't, they will be defenseless and get absolutely rolled. Damned if we do, and damned if we don't. The only thing that might work is to inform Russia that an invasion of Ukraine would result in sactions worse than they have ever seen (think Cuba embargo). Economic fear is probably the only thing that could make Russia back down, because there's no way we could get enough military hardware to Ukraine in time to defend them against an all out Russian assault.

I'm not even sure why we waste our time with Ukraine! Seems like they flip flop all the time! The last time they pulled that flip-flop shit it cost them Crimea!

Russia don't care about sanctions, neither does North Korea, China or Iran! It's a joke to think these people want anything more than to take over more land! China just took Hong Kong back, and they want Taiwan now.  Russia want's Ukraine back... and Iran just want's Israel wiped off the map. North Korea wants South Korea back. These people are prepared to go to war! They are tired of the bullshit, and quite frankly from all I have seen from the SBA and US banking I don't blame them! Already the market did a 1000pt whip-saw on the DOW! I think it's becoming clear that soon US money isn't going to be worth jack shit...

I think Ukraine should defend themselves... Same with the rest of the flip-flop nations that waste our time and money! Only REAL allies should be trusted and protected.

 Yo...

R1. NATO...After Fukushima, a lot of European countries wanted / are getting rid of all things nuclear. And since Mr.Trumpdt is pro-nuclear by default, he was simply told by his "puppet-masters" no-nukes, no NATO. And now we have this mess...Of course Russia is pro-nuke, & sees it as teasing the US-of-A . The bottom line is that we need to get rid of nukes, & the IAEA.

R2. The US-of-A has shown clearly in the past that it cares less about sanctions too, making its own rules-up as time goes on.

R3. Hong Kong was leased-out to the UK for 100-years only. That agreement ended, & China has full rights to reclaim its island.

R4. The Ukrain is fucked SELLC...Think Chernobyl & the ongoing consequences of when nukes go wrong.

R5. We did this after WW-II via the United Nations, when we divvied the lands of the middle-east up, & created Israel...This guaranteed perpetual war-fare...But don't worry, there's been so much use of depleted & enriched Uranium used over there, that all the middle-east, including Israel will be no-more in time, as the radionuclides silently take their toll on the populations.

R6. South Korea is an independent nation, & has been for decades. All North Korea wants is some of the "gravy" that South Korea earns.

R7. We are all by default, born into this world via a social-security number, & that means Military Service when needed...And you are so very correct in that the Banks are to blame for this mess, since they fund both sides of any war...

R8. Once upon a time, when your money was printed off-the-back of your gold reserves, it was legally possible to turn it into 4-times that amount. Now-days, via gov't bonds etc etc, they turn it into over 20-times that amount, & all to be repaid with interest...So yes, by default, your money was always worth jack-shit.

R9. Fear mongering & war is a HUGE money making enterprise...It's a sad human condition that sees one make prosperity out of another persons misery.

Very good perspective there Rastus! Thank you for taking the time!

Although just one thing you said above that I'm getting hung up with, didn't China take back Hong Kong earlier than the 100 years? IIRC there was some talk about China welching on this deal by claming the island decades PRIOR to the 100 years passing. I thought that is what all the rioting was going on there at the time was about... Oh I'm sure the UK worked some kind of side deal that none of us knows about, but I'm just saying...

Yo,

I'm guessing, but I think that it was 1999 when the lease ran-out, & China could claim back Hong Kong. Once again, all of this was about expansion & trade outside of UK & European borders, since they'd essentially ran-out-of room, & wanted to expand their title across the globe...Look at Singapore, & its strategic position for that area of our globe.

Just look at your own "Louisiana deal" with the French for verification...Alaska was even purchased from the Russians ;) !

And this system of expansion is still very-much alive & well today, just look at the genocide occurring in Mynamar even today, as we speak...You see the banks want to be in EVERY country around the world, so that they can imply their debt-collection with interest policies, which means the elimination of any persons who manage to live in peaceful harmony & balance with the environment. This is no good for our way of life to thrive, since by default, we're bound to the bosom of our gov't & its monetary systems...This is how they control us, & direct us around like sheep. Take the vaccinations as a good modern-day con-job example of how they manipulate us. And those of us who don't want the "jab" or think against the grain, get fined or imprisoned.

Interestingly, "World without War" just messaged me, congratulating all of those persons who continually signed petitions to end the genocide happening in Mynamar, & it worked...Chevron & other interested parties that were bankrolling the Mynamar military have stopped this, so hopefully the genocide stops, & these folks keep their country, & get to live in peace.

If it was 1999 then maybe I had it backwards...

I didn't follow it closely as I have always seen Hong Kong and Taiwan as China with a different flag for trade purposes.

Very glad your efforts have paid off for Mynamar and hopefully things get better! There has been a great deal of media coverage on Myanmar even in the US news.

Anyone else growing tired of Russia's on again, off again invasion of Ukraine?

Russia is starting to take the form of an international bully... it never ends well for them... just ask the Soviet Union... and China seems like their fat dumb buddy thru all this, just waiting to get knee-capped.

Hmmm...

I tried to link-up RTMoscow for the news headlines, but it seems that all connexions have been disconnected :(...

Here's a link to Aljezeera, where there's still some news occurring. Over 1,500 protesters in Russia have been arrested over the invasion...

So...It's looking like a "Ratings War" for the media, & for the Russian Military Industrial Complex to increase taxes to get more DoD funding....

This might be just a "WAR-GAMES" effort by Putin to clear-out "old-stock" items, & make-way for the "new-stuff" ...

RIP all the good folks that have needlessly died.

Looks like all them javelin missles are popping the turrants off Russian tanks.

Makes since though, might as well send in the crap first given the fact Russia is just rolling the stuff across the border, rather than shipping it across the sea or far away.

Although it looks bad, and it's not good for moral for Russia troops to have it's ass handed to them by Ukraine. Not sure if rolling out with the old stuff was such a good idea...

Hmmm...

It's very-much starting to look like a Western Media propaganda stunt, & we may well owe Russia & Mr.Putin an apology...

It appears that a Neo-Nazi extremists have infiltrated Ukrainian Government, & started training Ukrainian citizens for war, not so much against Russia, but anyone who does not meet their standards...

Russia may well be trying to keep this type-of-shyte out of the country, by eliminating it at the source...

Read on...This is what you're not being told...

LOL !!!

R1. No...I'm suggesting that 2 x world powers are acting like dick-heads, & that as usual, the corrupted media has not been delivering the goods...The media has been twisting information to paint a picture that isn't true, once again...This time it seems they've been leaving lot's of information out. The article posted above to World Beyond War speaks volumes I think.

R2. That's a managerial issue, that should never have happened.

R3. You're onto something here, but you forgot to add-in the corrupted media.

I'm pretty sure it simply means a "modern-day version of the old-Nazi's, where the old points-of-view & desires are maintained"...It sounds better than a racist, fascistic murdering pig.
