I didn't realize that you'd finished getting Goldilox up-&-running again, as I thought that project stalled for the short-term, that's why I keep nudging you for an SEC...Here in Oz you'll find 10 x 380SEC's to 1 x 560SEC, so the price for a 380SEC is pretty cheap, with typically the transmission needing some attention / 0verhaul...( There's room for adjustments of course, but there's no denying worn seals & slow oil-pressure-build in the 2nd-3rd gear shift at max RPM's lol ).

Anyhow, surely an SEC would be valid for the same registration fee's ???

Make new memories in a 560SEC is what I'd be doing if I had your parts-back-up, & make it a "top-tier" vehicle lol !

Nothing wrong with leaving the Mustang as the weekend drag-car only, & the "Vette" would qualify for the cheap registration fees too I'd imagine, & so this way you can keep it all original with low-miles. This way these cars become possible "investments", & the SEC the cheap-running Grand-tourer...

I only say these things since you have everything, except an SEC body...And spray-painting a body is possible, cheap, & you can do it yourself...Do the preparation through winter, & the painting once the temperature reaches a steady 20+ degrees Celcius.

You could possibly sell all the 126 bodies, clean-out your yard, & use that $$$ to grab an SEC body.

That being said, us talking about the 560 has summoned yet another one! One of my old customers passed and his son called to see if I wanted to buy it... IIRC it was a pretty solid black on black 91 560SEL that we put chain guides on. It was hard, but I told him to try and get the most money he could out of it since I only usually buy them in distress or as parts cars and cannot offer anywhere as much as it's probably worth. Lord knows if I brought home another Mercedes before these house renovations were finished the woman would literally melt down! Always hate to hear when a customer passes, I just hope his son can get a good sale price! Shouldn't be too hard since these cars really are getting hard to come by now days! Let's face it, between the ultra-high price to plate them as a daily driver, and the cost it would require to just keep the gas tank full now days - there is not many who still daily drive them anymore. Then again, I don't even know if it's fair to consider what little driving I do every month as "Daily Driving" since they don't let me out of the garage much.

Yo, there's a conversion table at the back of this MB Tech data Book, & or course, the MPG figures are different, since you have a choice between US-of-A MPG, & the Imperial / UK MPG...

The formulas are these....

235 / litres per 100-km consumed = MPG in US-of-A scale...

So, 235 / 14 = 16.8 MPG, or rounded off to a healthy 17-MPG :) !!!

 

282 / litres per 100-km consumed = MPG in Imperial / UK scale...

So, 282 / 14 = 20.14 MPG :) !!!

 

That's knocking right on the door & bettering in this circumstance 560 mileage Stellar...And further proves that it's not the size of the engine that necessarily determines fuel consumption, because when geared correctly, & at cruise on the hwy, its the amount of energy contained per drop-of-fuel, & the quantity that has to be used, to keep pulling the weight of the vehicle, whilst over coming friction forces of tyres, gravity, wind & inclination that brings similar fuel consumption figures from a wide range of engines...

*At cruise speeds, this 6.9 ltr engine only consumes 1.5 ltrs more than my 3.5 ltr V-8, which is 1/2 the size...

The book also reveals that a real heavy foot with lots of flat out overtaking & WOT use can see up to 24 litres consumed over 100-km's, & that's Cadillac territory lol !

235 / 24 = 9.8 MPG in US-of-A scale...

The 6.9 was the "Best of the best" that MB made in that generation of "116" chassis vehicles through the 1970's. Apart from the capacity, it featured all-round hydro-pneumatic suspension. ( *Similar to a 560SEL rear hydraulic suspension, but at all four wheels, & no springs ). It was a surprising release too, as there were many "Gas shortage crisis's" through the 1970's, but it sold well, though in limited numbers.

They were identical to a 450SEL in appearance, with apparently most folks state-side not wanting the 6.9 badge on the trunk. Slightly wider tires & larger exhaust pipes were the only tell-tales when looking at one.

The engine-block is cast iron, though the cylinder-heads are aluminum. And the fuel injection system is K-Jetronic, the predecessor of CISE.

The 300's featured the 6.3 ltr V-8 with 4-speed auto...The fuel injection system on these babies were near-on-identical to what's found on most diesel engines. ( A mechanically driven lift-pump, with the plunger, rack, cam & helix format ).

It's funny that MB were developing 4-speed autos through the 1960's & then went 3-speed autos for all the V-8's through the 1970's...I dare say that the one-planetary gear-set proved more durable at that time.

Still staying busy over here and I'm still on budget... but I wished I was further along! Sometimes it's both a blessing and a curse being a one man show... 

Well... just a few more days and my oldest will be home for Christmas! He's not even been gone for six months, but it will sure good to have all the kids back home for the Holiday!

I've more or less had to abandon all home improvements for quite some time as I have been busy with cars... it's really tricky at times now that I don't have little helpers, but honestly I have come to the realization that if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself! 

The only problem with that is it takes a whole lot longer! At least I'm starting to get things more in order out in the garage, that seems to help on all fronts! Plus I really do enjoy my work, most days... 

Got one more job left that should be done later this morning and then it's back to big blue until she's back in order! Have some SUPER before and after photos I'll share in the Ford forum once it's back inside. Once Big Blue is over the curb I'm free! What that means is that all pandemic jobs and such will have been completed! Sure, the company will be paying for it the next 30 years but the company has come a LONG way since the COVID days! If we indeed do see a recession in the next few years and business property comes down to realistic levels, I'll be ready and waiting!

Looking forward to a white Christmas this year, as reports are in that we will get hit with a massive snow storm starting on Thrusday and rolling thru the rest of the holiday weekend! Thank goodness I put snow tires on the lincoln! LOL, although our new 2WD company truck will no doubt be a challenge in any sort of snow... and with the snow comes the low single digit (F) temperatures! From the looks of things we will see negative temps in January!

Sometimes I think it would all just be sunshine and butterflies if I got me a beach house somewhere warm and called it a day! LOL

I don't have a loan... the company has a loan!

I guess you could say if the company has a loan, I have a loan... HOWEVER, it's at a LOCKED 3.75% interest rate, so the company will be more than fine. 

With reagrds to my mortgage, I like knowing my taxes and insurance are collected monthly so I don't have to come out of pocket for these expenses in a lump sum... I don't begrudge the interest because I bought in at a really low price and my interest rate is under 4%... but there is nothing wrong with saving some money either! For this reason my plan is to do just that over the course of the next few years. Right now I am just cleaning up the mess of the past... the restructuring has taken hold and I have no complaints. What the future holds is anyones guess but I have plans... 

At this point Rastus, I just have to crank out the cash... it's been rather easy, even in the cold weather... things are coming together.

I think we can both agree that health and a sound state of mind are about the biggest riches anyone can have, but having some dollars set back isn't bad either! 

 

Well, hopefully we all made it thru the holidays okay! I know this Christmas was a most wonderful time of the year as the kid come home from Texas and we were all together. New Years, as you could see from my other thread was pretty damn good too!

Moving into 2023 I'm pretty excited about everything coming together, and I'm optimistic that I have secured most of the items needed to complete my projects and jobs regardless if the economy goes up, down, sideways or even all three like a whip saw. I'm removed from the market with the exception of my $120 earnings from that last drunken purchase... I left that money in there because if anything it keeps me from feeling like I need to buy more. I watch it go up and down without any real care, unlike when I had larger amounts of money invested. And it's a good thing too because look how much Tesla has tanked! Even the crypto has been doing poorly, excpet for that bump in DOGE that saw me sell just before a $1000+ profit...  but Bitcoin is now in the mid $16,000 range, which is way too much for my blood... Still some people out there are trying to say it's going to hit $250,000... but I just don't understand that because there really is nothing backing crypto. All that being said, I have no real plans for the market in 2023, absent buying a little here and there if it's really-really down.

It's really a miracle I was able to get my roof fixed, a temporary gas furnace installed and the Mustang inside before the weather turned. I just been fixing them as they come in, and getting everything sorted and in order for the projects in between. It's been working but I need some of these major ones to click together so I can move on... if money were no object, I suppose I could be more liberal in certian areas that would increase the speed this all gets done but that is not going to keep things within budget... therefore, it's not going to be quick... but it will be done RIGHT. 

A lot of what I am doing now I'm trying to design in terms of when I get older... maybe 20 years from now... foe example, did I really want to mount my HVAC system in the attic where it would be hard to service and maintain? HELL NO! When I'm in my 60's I'm not going to want to crawl up in the attic to service or repair my unit! So I axed the attic mounted HVAC, moved it to the utility room and STILL got the extra space inside the living area, along with deleting that leaky old chimney! But it was more work, complicated and specialty work with regards to ductwork. Ultimatly, in my eyes - everything SHOULD be in the utility room... access to everything should allow for ALL appliances to be easily serviced and a short run for high AMP appliances, and a short whip for the AC to compressor. It's all been thought over time and time again... from the manifold to feed the existing and new gas appliances, to the proper service and methods that energize them. 

It has to be more challenging to take something old and improve or restore it to modern day methods than it would have been to just bulldoze the entire house and start from scratch, but clearly COVID was not the right time for anything like that! And if we look at it from that perspective, over-all I'll be saving in excess of $150,000.00 easily. I just hate how everyone I know likes to nag and or tease me about it... knowing that like 90% of them could ever even dream of doing such a thing themselves. LOL

I'm also very insterested in getting something done with the Website to get it back in order... this switch to Mac has been nice, but most of my HTML editors are Windows based, including my outdated shop management software. I'm a data packrat, and I just feel there has to be a better way to organize all this stuff but some of these new image types and the Mac OS is somewhat still a little bit hard for me to really get comfortable with. For example, in the Windows days I would just make folders to group data, but on the Mac it's a little different. Moving files is not a straightforward thing, there is really no easy interface to catagorize without extensive... it's hard to move files and I guess my command of the OS is just poor... but I don't want to go back into Windows either, if only because Windows missed the boat when they failed to intigrate their OS into a phone... Windows phones were crap back in the day! When iPhone came out it was almost as good as being at a desktop for regular use... You point, you click... Same with the Camera back then, point and shoot... Now days these cameras have nearly a photographers array of features and fine tuning methods and the files are HUGE! Usually in a new format (HEIC) rather than the traditional .jpg... and in terms of using a photos to post on the internet, you usually stick with .jpg because it's most accepted by all the different browsers! It's really a bit overwhelming really! It all goes back to Windows failure to intigrate into the telephone! So for me, sticking with Apple is the goal, but this is only because the last many years I have only been running one machine... and a phone. 

Anyway, I had to vent some frustrations... Keeping with the Mercedes theme of this thread it would seem the kid got hired in my Mercedes-Benz down in Texas... Back in 2019 when he was in his last year of training we were able to put out some incredible numbers for our size... I'm sure Mercedes will be able to make some money with him... however there are a lot of politics in Dealerships, and who knows... if anything it builds on his skill set and trade... and you never know, he may just like it there! I'm sure his old job will miss him as much as we do, as he is a hard worker, shows up on time and is reliable... add in the fact he has been in mechanic training since he could walk, the hands on general automotive experience is sure to save Mercedes a bunch of time and money... I'd imagine it would be pretty easy to work on Mercedes in a Mercedes Dealership... politics aside.

So that's all I've got... I been itching for a Miami trip but I just don't know... I still a little sore about my last visit... Feeling like doing something for a few days as the end of the month here is going to SUCK! Taxes, licenses, paperwork up the ass! 

Here is something... and I don't know if I'm right or wrong about this, however in life it would seem that there will ALWAYS be the next thing to fix, or the next problem to resolve... you finish one big thing and the next one follows it down! You could literally just spend your entire life just fixing things and dealing with problems 24/7... as a self employed small business person when do you EVER get a vacation? The answer is NEVER, but it sure feels like them 24-72 hour escapes sure do go a long way to bugging out and escaping at least the mondane every-day grind... if you ask my wife she will say sitting at home and never leaving the house is all the life I need! LOL, and that's probably right... if I was retired and drawing social security in my 80's! LOL! I've still got a few good years left in me before I turn 50! 

 

It just wasn't in the stars...

So the kid started his new job on Monday at Mercedes Benz in Texas... so far he seems to like it! Although I was none to impressed with Mercedes-Benz USA screwing around on Twitter... I have always followed Mercedes and Corvette on Twitter, but for whatever reason on the day the kid started they must have removed and then re-added my follow three times in a single day! It was very odd because it would show the amount of people I was following at 12 rather than the normal 13... I keep the amount of people I follow low so I can keep up with Twitter, otherwise they would just have your feed stuffed like a thanksgiving turkey! Anyway, the weird shit ended after a giving them a scaving reply that I don't work for them, THEY WORK FOR ME!

The kid on the other hand, well... he seems to be enjoying the German way. I hear about how the service area has white tile floors, and all mechanics are issued their tool boxes to keep the uniform look in the shop! LOL, fancy stuff... Apparently he has seen his first Maybach and AMG GT... Mostly they have him on them big ass Sprinter vans but no doubt he is very impressed... hell I'm impressed and I am only getting this shit second hand...

Him going to work at Mercedes is a win-win for me... if he does well and likes his job I'm going to be happy for him... if it don't work out, well I'll just say he should have been here working with me anyway! LOL, so you see, it's a win-win!

All that aside, I am within a stones throw of having all my paperwork done! I have also cleaned up the webcralwers thread from that last time and brought it back public since the girls are back together doing their podcast again! 

I'm starting to feel better as Big Blue is starting to have some light at the end of the tunnel, however I still have one small issue with the valve covers for the V10 trucks being NLA from Fords! Working on it now and I will be posting a thread about it in the Ford forum... 

Speaking of Ford, I have a story I am going to be telling in the DPS6 transmission thread relating to my 92 year old grandmother's 2014 Ford Focus with the DPS6 transmission that has needed THREE CLUTCHES in 30,000 miles! Apparently according to the local Lincoln dealership service manager this is "totally normal"... along with the violent shutter the car has on low acceloration... LOL, anyway, after the shit bag tried to sell me that bag of lies I basiclly pulled out my State of Michigan Master Mechainc Certificate and let him have it! Needless to say, they waived my inspection charge of $152 and now me and my whole entire family is BANNED from the local Lincon dealership according to the service manager. LOL, this is quite far from over! Because the bitch ass service manager was also so embarassed he canceled my FEDERAL RECALLS for the womans Lincoln for the Takata Air bag and ABS pump! This is where he REALLY screwed up, because unlike the 2014 Focus, the 2006 Lincoln with Federally mandated recalls is in MY NAME! So they are going to really get their share of complaints soon! PowerStroker should LOVE this one! It might come to pass with three clutches in 30,000 miles for the same problem that Ford might ened up having to buy back my Grandmothers car under the Lemon Law! I am currently looking for firms that sepecialize in this that will represent her on contingency, since I am not an attorney I cannot represent her, but I can damn sure be her witness! The Lincoln I can handle myself because it's mine and in my name. These stupid fuckers! LOL, they just don't know who they are messing with! I find it funny they all run around the dealership with them little FBI/CIA hands free earphones, it's really turned into a joke... and it all feels like it's being done to take advantage of the customer. Anyway, I will have details, receipts, links and names in the DPS6 transmission thread... from there I'll prolly post it on Twitter and Facebook... so we all have that to look forward to! Truth is, when he said me and my family was no longer welcome at the dealership I really didn't give a shit, clearly their dealership sucks!

Just got caught up with my paperwork yesterday! All done with paperwork (taxes, registration etc.) until next quarter, outside of invoicing for current or future jobs of course... Amazing the money that was spent! And our numbers were SHIT for 2022! You want to know why Shawnee? Because the dude I been training like he was my own kid is out working for Mercedes instead of here working with me to get these numbers up! Not to mention his Corvette is still sitting in my back yard torn apart... he seems to think I'm just going to put it together for him, and to be honest if I run out of shit to do I will... damn thing is taking up all kinds of space! LOL

But I'm proud of him none the less... I just hope he realizes it's about the money! If he ain't making it, and at least able to maintain the lifestyle he had... then maybe he could have been further ahead, making Mercedes-Benz work for him, rather than the other way around. I honestly don't know why the hell he went to work for Mercedes! Shit the last time I had him help me pull the transmission out of the 560 it was dangling from the wire speed sensor... then he punched me in the face for ripping him a new asshole (while said transmission was dangling)... truth is I've put a lot of time and money into that kid... at the least he better make himself proud! 

But I'm over that now Shawnee! It is what it is... you're only young once!

Also, working in a mine is VERY risky business... there is a better than average chance you won't live to enjoy retirement, and if you do... you might not be living well! Bummer about the power. The gen looks good, fingers crossed it hangs-in-there for at least 10 or more years.

As for the bumper...Honestly, I'd replace it after-market, & have someone paint-it-up to the OEM paint-code.

If you do repair it since there's no aftermarket one available, & an OEM item is $2,000:00, grab a large / high wattage soldering iron with a flat-blade screwdriver looking head, & stitch the plastic back together. You find extra plastic to melt-in-there from some support molding within the bumper itself, as that way you're using the same plastic, & it will stick together OK.

The OEM paint can be purchased in a spray-can, or if you have a spray-gun already, around 250-mls of paint & Pheonix clear will see you home OK imo.

It's quite amazing all the plastic in newer cars these days...One 20-mph direct front-end-crash & the cars a write-off...

Thanks Rastus! I have tried to keep my praise to a minimum until the power-outage was over because I didn't want to jinx the unit... fact is they were all sold out, I got the 2nd to last! So getting an exchange I'm sure wouldn't be a quick option. All told the power went out Wednesday night and wasn't turned on until the following Tuesday in the afternoon. The unit ran 24/7 non-stop from Thursday morning on thru until Tuesday afternoon and never got above 50% load rating (per the digital read out). I burnt thru $207 in gasoline and the unit was a little north of $1550... so you can do the math on what this outage has cost! Keep in mind many days were well below freezing! There was no other option without risking plumbing damage or possibly even freezing to death! In fairness this would be the first time I ever seen branches that were frozen solid just shatter and fall... the sound was like out of that movie "The day after tomorrow"... 

I am looking for a used bumper in the same color, since it's going to be hard to match 18+ year old "frost metalic pearl"... I have new headlights and the old fog lights are still good... for now I could bond it up but odds are at highway speeds it will be risky since it's an actual split in two, rather than a crack. 

Shawnee, that's a bummer! I was right there with you! Just got our power back yesterday! Do you also have a generator for when the power goes out? Also like your custom plate, I figured what the hell... it's a Corvette... it's worth a few extra bucks to have something custom.

Welp, made it thru the power outage and got the generator all ready for storage... I ran it 100% dry to ensure it would not be stored with gas in the tank and I got new pint of synthetic oil ready for it's next use. I'm still a little hurt about the cost of the unit, but I'm trying to tell myself the extra $400 was well spent in buying a premium brand... time will tell, and when it comes to power outages in the North -- well, let's just say in the winter months it's the difference between heat and freezing to death. Probably worth a few hundred more, right? 

I can't even begin to express the level of fear that is being laid on thick by the Main Stream Media... I guess it's par for the course every since COVID... but now were in the endemic phase of the program, where people are tired of hearing about COVID and now BBC seems to think the entire experience did not negatively impact peoples minds...

So it's quite clear, it's time to move on! Keeping that in mind, I try my best not to spend too much time on the MSM sites, but I cannot resist! I have to stay informed, or mis-informed -- depending on the issue and timeline. I try to tell myself that we only know what they want us to know, because if we knew the truth -- well, let's just say the truth is not very popular... never has been. Instead I have been emersing myself in social media, music and work! Things got put on hold for a week while the power was out, but I have made a great big push to get going on the next phase of my reno... starting with the floor in the Utility.

 

I decided that since I am only doing a small amount of drywall work that I would put down the floor to prevent the remaining black tar from becoming impregnated with dirt, drywall dust and whatever... The truth of the matter here is the same with anything that is not "new" constriction, and that is: WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE? In this case I'm putting down the floor and I will cover the floor with all the old cardboard boxes that the new major appliances came in to prevent damage, plus they are pretty inexpensive compared to most all other options, in other words I still have a full box of tiles left over with scraps.  Since I am only replacing one base trim (by the pipes) and the manifold will come in where the door used to be, drywall work will be minimal. 

Still keeping my existing water heater in play until I have a proper manifold built out for the new gas appliances, then I have to decide if I am going to run with the existing pipes from 1959 or pay to have a new meter with all new pipes direct to the utility. I will check pricing again in the spring, but with my home heating credit it will help reduce that number overall. It would just seem like the best option to have all new gas pipes, and not have a huge old gas pipe running overhead the entire house. I have since learned that the main gas line (stainless 4 inch) out at the curb was installed in 1959... this house is listed as being on the books in 1950, so for a period of at least 10 years this house did not have any gas service! And that was when it was brand new! It's just amazing to me, yet at the same time it puts into perspective a lot of what I am seeing in this renovation... 

The stick down tile was a good choice for a utility room in my opinon... since the whole floor slopes down towards the drain, traditional title just would not have been a good choice... but with this stuff it was able to keep that contour, and still maintain a consistant interlocking pattern. I sacraficed a few tiles to keep the existing water heater in play, so they will be pulled up and the pattern will be preserved when that time comes. For now this allows me to bring in the new appliances to be "fitted"...

I say "fitted" because this house was built in the 1950's and it's not like new construction where everything is fitted into the plans... with the HVAC duct work, not including the new PVC exhaust vents, gas manifold and other modern day technologies everything has to be "fitted" on this old 1950's house. Where I want to put things might not fly due to design or interference! The layout has been guesstimated but nothing is final... I have had to change plans several times due to limitations in areas that would call for extensive remodeling to overcome! It's turning out to be a compromise more than anything! And it's been a damn hard fought battle! One that has seen contractors running out of here screaming, or giving a quote so large they might as well just have just said "fuck you" and saved themselves the time. 

So were moving forward, but I just feel like I should be so much further ahead by now... the only positive is that there has been no waste, and outside of regular living expenses increasing, I'm pretty much still on budget... save for the investment in the whole house generator I recently purchased when the power went out. I had plans to get one, I'm sure I've mentioned it a few replies back before the power outage, but the week long power outage moved it up to the top of the list real quick in that 15F degree weather! LOL

Thing is, we really haven't been able to keep actual records of these activites for very long, what maybe 10-20 years at BEST? What is that in the cosmic scale? It's a mere afterthought!

No one can deny it's magnificent that we can see this now days!

It's all very fascinating Rastus... but I try and focus my attention on things I can change!

Let's be real, no amount of money is going to stop the sun from flaring up! No amount of money is going to stop the tectonic plates from moving around! And no amount of money is going to stop the power of the Universe! These are things that are nice to know, but there is very little that can be done about it.

Business has been brisk the past week... I'm actually a little sore with one car left before the next ones roll in this weekend. Feel like I'm in the circus the way I am juggling everything right now... It's easy to become overwhelmed if looking at it all in totality... so I been making lists and prioritizing tasks, some days I get more done than others.

 The cure is NO MONEY. DARPA has the earthquake machine, Tesla made it. Syria, Turkey earthquakes, the news is out, was DARPA. Soooooooooo no money for them!

I too have always felt that with properly placed nukes at certian fault lines, or perhaps a few of them boring company tunnel makers running across a fault -- that man could "create" an earthquake... I can't say for sure that it's even been done (above my pay grade) but I have always felt that it could be done. I don't know about some giant space laser that Rastus speaks of, but it's not out of the realm of possibilites!

Sorry if I have been a bit distant... the cars and trucks have been coming and going, which is good because I'm not making any money while I'm saving money working on my house! LOL

There have been a lot of interesting revelations that I am going to share in other "more related" threads, but for the most part I'm feeling good and the weather is starting to make a turn for the better finally! Sure, it's been rainy and I damn near have to get a raft to cross the mini-lakes in the back yard -- but at least it's WARM! (read that as well above freezing)

I'd like to make some serious progress this spring in the HVAC department so I can focus on other things this summer. It's more or less sweet-spot weather for getting up in the attic... so much to be done, so little man-power! I've had my eye out for the next apprentice, but good help is as hard as ever to find.

I been spinning this mix the past week... it's a collection of some newer new-wave / digital tunes that would be played in your raves and whatnot now days... some of the songs might be too intense for you old-timers 

 

IMO the 2nd and 4th songs really slap! The 5th I have shared in here in another thread, and even the 1st song gets you warmed up for the remaing tunes.

This "directed energy" weapon is not nothing new, and it's not like a laser either... they claim some of our Embassy workers were targeted with directed energy attacks in Cuba quite some time ago.
